Eleaf’s iStick range is an absolute all-timer (especially amongst old-timer vapers like myself!) and they have refreshed the iStick brand with the Eleaf iStick X80!front view eleaf istick x80

One of the biggest brand names in the industry, Eleaf have been around for almost 15 years now, developing innovative technologies and products to meet the needs of the fast-paced vaping market.

The iStick from Eleaf took the vaping world by storm when it was released 10 years ago, quickly becoming one of the biggest selling devices at the time and it was one of the most talked about in vaping forums at the time.

When it came to sub ohm tanks, Eleaf also scored a big hit with the Melo tank ‘back in the day’, boasting performance that pretty much blew all other sub ohm tanks out of the water!

Eleaf’s iStick X80 is the latest version carrying the famous iStick name, and the latest version of the Melo tank is included with the Melo X, so let’s see if this kit has the potential to become as popular as its predecessors!

Also, Eleaf are releasing an even more powerful version in the iStick X100- we shall also cover that off in this review!

What Can We Expect From The Eleaf iStick X80 Kit?

As mentioned above, both the iStick and Melo names are very well known amongst seasoned vapers, and Eleaf have combined the two in this kit with the iStick X80 device and the Melo X tank…

Starting off with the iStick X80, Eleaf have designed an ergonomic and solidly built device that comes in a range of five different colours, which feature a premium ice-flower finish.
eleaf-istick-x80-box
A vibrant 1.05″ TFT colour screen presents all the information you need at a glance, and has four different customisable UI themes so that you can personalise your device around your personality.

Performance is driven by the intelligent Avatar Chip 2.0, which delivers smart wattage recommendation, a memory function and upgradeable firmware!

There are two different output modes available, with power mode allowing you to adjust power from 5-80W and RTA mode designed with rebuilable atomisers in mind, allowing you to adjust the output voltage from 0.5-9V.

An innovative press-twist button gives you total control over your iStick X80 device, with the multi-functional button combining press and twist actions to make operating your iStick X80 smooth and intuitive.

A 3200mAh battery keeps your vaping sessions powered up, and 5V/2A Type-C fast charging gets your battery charged back up in no time!

The Melo X tank is also part of the iStick X80 Kit, with this being an easy to use, leak-free sub ohm tank.

It is compatible with Eleaf’s newest EC-D dual mesh coils, which have received an upgrade over the original EC coils, providing a warmer vape, improved flavour and extended performance and lifespan.

The sliding top-fill design makes it easy to refill on the move, and the 510 drip tip connector means you can switch your drip tip out easily!

Many thanks to Eleaf for sending the iStick X80 kit over to review, let’s see how it performs!

As always, all views are my own…

Kit Contents

kit contentsEverything in the presentation box comes neatly packed, and you’ve got nearly everything you need in here to get sub-ohm vaping- you just need to supply your own e-liquid…

Opening up the box, firstly you’ll find the User Manual and Warranty Card, inside a white cardboard wallet. Underneath this is the iStick X80 Device and the Melo X Tank. Pre-installed in the tank is a 0.5ohm EC-D Coil, and there is also a spare 0.3ohm EC-D Coil in the box.

I love the fact that you also have spares for the Melo X tank, such as O-Rings, Replacement Tank Sectionand even a Silicone Filling Port Cover, as this can save you from having to purchase a whole new tank if something breaks!

Design & Build Quality

The iStick X80 Kit is comprised of the iStick X80 device and the Melo X tank, with overall dimensions of 134.1mm x 38.7mm x 28.1mm, so this isn’t a little sub ohm pocket rocket- it’s actually quite tall!

The overall size might take some getting used to especially if you are moving from a pod system to a device like this that offers a little more power.eleaf istick x80 kit in hand

You have got five different finishes to choose from, four of which have a ‘premium ice-flower’ finish on them. The options are Red-Yellow Gradient, Black, Sky Blue, Red-Blue Gradient and Silver.

I got sent the Red-Yellow Gradient finish and I am absolutely in love with it. It is predominantly gold, with a gradient down to red at the base, and the finish just absolutely shimmers and sparkles.base eleaf istick x80

The build quality is excellent too, with the device being very well machined, and it is very comfortable to hold. It doesn’t feel too weighty either, but still feels robust at the same time!

The front of the device is where all the action is. Starting from up top, there’s the press-twist button. This allows you to adjust settings and control the device by pressing and twisting, it is very responsive and tactile too.oled screen eleaf istick x80

Just underneath this is the 1.05″ TFT colour screen, which is bright and shows the usual information such as battery level, output power, output mode, coil resistance and a puff counter.

It also displays a colour animation, which can be customised. There are four different UI themes available, with ‘Racer’, ‘Pulse’, ‘Bubbles’ and ‘Aurora’ themes available through the menu.colour oled screen eleaf istick x80

Beneath the screen is the locking switch, and the Type-C charging port. The locking switch is actually quite smart, allowing you to lock the functional button down entirely, unlock the power function but lock the output power, or have the functional button fully unlocked.

By locking it down entirely, you can guard against accidental misfires without needing to turn your device off when not in use!

A blast from the past is present on the iStick X80 device, as this features a spring-loaded 510 connector, which used to be the standard connection on vape mods not all that long ago!510 connector

I might be a bit of a vaping dinosaur but I definitely prefer a trusty 510 connection. This means you screw your tank into the connector, rather than connecting it magnetically, and this holds firmer than a magnetic connector does.

Also, having a 510 connector means that you aren’t locked into using the tank that comes with the kit- another advantage over a device with a magnetic connection, so you can use any tank featuring a 510 connector.eleaf-istick-x80-melo-tank

Of course, the Melo X Tank features a compatible 510 connector!

Melo X Tank

The Melo X Tank features a 5ml capacity for non-TPD markets, and a 2ml capacity for TPD markets. A bubble styled glass tank section provides the extra capacity, whereas for the 2ml version the tank section is flush with the tank.eleaf melo vape tank

You do get a replacement tank section in the kit if you manage to crack or break the one on the tank!

You have a sliding top filling system at the top, and the drip tip connector is also 510 threaded so that you can use your own 510 threaded drip tip if you so wish.

It has a top airflow system, with two large airflow cut outs at the top of the tank which are adjusted via an airflow control ring.

Quick Start Guide

How to Fill the Melo X Tank

As mentioned above, the Melo X tank features a sliding top fill system. This means that you slide the top of the tank to one side to reveal the silicon filling port.how to fill eleaf melo x tank

My only issue with this is that the top of the tank does not seem to slide far enough back and the filling port is a little too small for some shortfill bottles, resulting in some accidental leakage when filling from time to time.

Anyway, to fill the tank, slide the top of the tank back to reveal the filling port, insert the bottle nozzle and fill it up.

If you are using a fresh coil for the first time, it is advisable to let the e-liquid sit in the tank for at least five minutes before you vape, to allow the cotton in the coil to fully absorb the e-liquid.

This will cut down on the risk of burnt hits happening and in turn will prolong the lifespan of your coil!

Operation

  • Five clicks of the power button will turn the device on and off
  • To vape, hold the power button down and inhale
  • Accessing the menu is done via clicking the power button three times in quick succession
  • Whilst in the menu, twist the button to scroll through the settings and press it to confirm your selection
  • Selecting POWER mode through the menu will set the output to variable wattage, RTA mode changes it to variable voltage
  • THEME allows you to choose between four different UI themes
  • PUFF CLEAR resets the puff counter to zero
  • The iStick X80 has a memory function setting, whereby it remembers your usual output setting after you vape with it twice in a row
  • The device will automatically set a power output for your coil if needed
  • The device is firmware upgradeable by using the included Type-C cable to connect it to your computer and visiting the official Eleaf website
  • To fully reset the device, insert a pin into the ‘Reset’ hole located on the base of the iStick X80

Changing the Coil

To change the coil, you will need to unscrew the Melo X tank from the iStick X80 device.

After that, invert the tank and unscrew the base of it. You can then slide the old coil out and replace it with a new one, before screwing the base of the tank back in.

It is advisable to do this with an empty tank if possible as the e-liquid will spill out otherwise!

Charging

Eleaf include a Type-C cable in the box which can be used for charging, you just need to plug this into the charging port on the front of the device and utilise a suitable power output.

5V/2A fast charging is found here so you don’t have to wait around long for the iStick X80 to charge up!

Whilst charging, the charging status is displayed on screen as a percentage when you press the power button.

Pass-through charging is also present, so you can still vape whilst you charge, but this will increase the charging time.

Safety Features

  • Over-charge protection
  • Low battery protection
  • Over-current protection
  • 10s vaping cut-off
  • Short-circuit protection

Eleaf iStick X100 Kit

Eleaf also sent the iStick X100 Kit through so I figured that I would give it a mention in this review too.

Both devices are very similar, and they both have the same Melo X tank and coils bundled in the kit, however there are a couple of differences.eleaf istick xc100 with melo tank

As you might have deduced from the name, the X100 is the more powerful of the two, as the power output goes right up to 100W!

It’s also slightly taller too, with dimensions of 149.6mm x 39.3mm x 29.2mm. You can see the comparison in the picture I have taken!eleaf istick xc100 and x80 side-by-side

Rather than having a built in battery, the X100 can take a 21700 one or an 18650 using an included adaptor.eleaf-istick-xc100-base-battery

So, battery life is down to the capacity of the battery you decide to use with it!

How Does The Eleaf iStick X80 Perform?

So this is without a doubt a restricted lung/direct to lung vaping kit. You can get a mouth to lung vape from it but it doesn’t feel as suited, especially as the 0.5ohm coil is a little too strong for a MTL.eleaf-istick-x80-fire-button

It is a powerful kit, with the power output range being 5-80W in power mode or 0.5V-9V in RTA mode. I didn’t really notice any difference in power between the two modes and I tended to opt for power mode for variable wattage as that is what I am used to!

Though I do love how Eleaf don’t restrict the power output depending on which coil that you decide to use, you have the freedom to vape however you see fit.

If you want to vape the 0.5ohm coil at 80W, despite it being rated for use at 15-25W, then you can go right ahead and do that if you so wish!

However, I would wholeheartedly recommend not doing so as for the purposes of this review I did try that out, with the end result being that the vape tasted of hot metal and it gave me a headache…

0.3ohm EC-D Coil

With this coil, Eleaf say that it works best at 30-45W, and you can push this a little further up to the 50-60W mark before it starts to struggle a bit with wicking e-liquid.elea-melo-x-tank

I get a warm and quite intense vape when using this coil, it is also better suited to an airier and looser draw rather than a tighter one. I was definitely impressed with the flavour results that I got from it.

If you are pushing the 45W mark with this coil, then it does keep up with wicking, even when using 60/40 and 70/30 VG/PG e-liquids.

That is a good thing as you don’t want a hot burnt hit!

0.5ohm EC-D Coil

Eleaf rate this coil for use at 15-25W, you can push this a bit further up to 30W, though I felt that it performed best for me in the 23-25W range.

In that range, and with the airflow set to provide a restricted lung hit, this just really hits the spot for me with a smooth and very flavourful vape, that has a little bit of warmth to it which compliments the e-liquids that I have been using.

Weirdly, despite usually having a preference for the lower resistance and higher powered option, I actually preferred the 0.5ohm EC-D coil.

The smoother, cooler vape and restricted lung hit just seemed to vibe with me a bit more.

Maybe all this time vaping prefilled/refillable pods has chilled my vaping style out somewhat!

Both of these coils are excellent though and do their respective jobs very well indeed.

Coil Compatibility

Not only is the Melo X tank compatible with the included EC-D coils, but you can use any of Eleaf’s EC coils in this tank, making it compatible with:

  • 0.15/0.3/0.5ohm EC-D Dual Mesh
  • 0.15/0.3/0.5ohm EC-A Mesh
  • 0.3/0.5ohm EC-2 Mesh
  • 0.15ohm EC-M Mesh
  • 0.15ohm EC-N Mesh coils.

To push the power limits of this device, and vape in the 70-80W mark, you will need one of the 0.15ohm coils in order to do so.

Just don’t use the temperature control EC coils with the iStick X80 device as the iStick X80 does not support temperature control!

Coil Lifespan

Now the lifespan of your coil will depend on different factors such as the viscosity of your e-liquid, how often you vape, the power level you vape at and the flavourings and sweetener content of your e-liquids.

I got a week from the 0.5ohm coil, using it in the 23-25W power range, and five days from the 0.3ohm one at 40-45W. I was primarily vaping dessert and custard shortfills, with 60/40 and 70/30 VG/PG ratios.

I will say that the Melo X tank is a thirsty one, regardless of which EC coil that you decide to use!

Shortfills will be your friend here as you will get through a lot of e-liquid using this kit, which is par for the course with a sub-ohm tank as the increased power level combined with a larger cotton surface area absorbs and uses more e-liquids.

I got sent the 5ml capacity version and I would refill this at least once a day, sometimes more. The 2ml TPD version would require a fair few refills during your day depending on how frequently you vape!

Airflow

Well, the Melo X tank has airflow for absolute days!

It boasts two huge airflow slots at the top of the tank, controlled by a buttery smooth airflow control.eleaf melo x mouthpiece

When you are vaping at high wattage and have the airflow opened right up, you get some absolutely massive clouds! It can also be quite noisy too, as there’s a noticeable ‘wooshing’ sound as airflow is drawn in.

To achieve a restricted lung hit, you’ve got to close those airflow intakes down somewhat. There are also smaller, circular airflow intake holes that can provide a mouth to lung hit (and a quieter vape) when the larger intake slots are totally closed off, but this tank really is for lung hitting.

Heat dissipation is quite impressive too, as when vaping at high wattage both the tank and the drip tip stayed relatively cool during use.

Battery Life

Eleaf have managed to pack in a 3200mAh battery into the iStick X80 device, which is capable of really keeping up with extended vaping sessions.

It is quite noticeable when using the 0.5ohm EC coil in the Melo X tank, as I’m getting a good couple of days of vaping before I need to pop it on charge.

Of course, it is well worth bearing in mind that if you are vaping frequently at high power with a low resistance EC coil in the Melo X tank, battery life is going to take a hit!

Pros

  • Phenomenal flavour from the Melo X tank
  • Excellent battery life
  • Fast charging
  • Melo X tank is compatible with a lot of different coils
  • Wide range of different airflow options
  • Powerful device
  • Great choice for someone getting into restricted lung/direct to lung vaping
  • Clever locking switch operation
  • 510 connector present
  • Plenty of spares in the box for the Melo X tank

Cons

  • It’s a big old kit!
  • Filling port opening is quite small and can cause spillage when filling
  • Melo X tank can be pretty thirsty on e-liquid
  • It is also quite noisy with the airflow opened up

Final Verdict

I was dead excited to get my hands on this kit as I was a big fan of the original Eleaf iStick back in the day, I owned many of them and frequently rocked my iStick with the Eleaf Melo tank!

Pleasingly, this brings back memories of those heady days of vaping when lung hitting and blowing the biggest, most anti-social clouds was all the rage!

The Melo X tank is even better than how I remembered the previous Melo tank to be. Flavour is absolutely spot-on, and the airflow means you can easily cloud out a room in a couple of minutes if you so wish!

And the iStick X80 device is as rock solid and dependable as previous iStick devices were…

It is accessible (a key component of iStick devices in the past) so that anyone can get to grips with it easily, it is powerful and it has battery life that just goes on and on, thanks to the 3200mAh built in battery.

Plus of course, if you want even more power, there is also the option of the iStick X100 kit too!

Although refillable pod systems and prefilled pod kits currently dominate the market, it’s worth remembering that vaping trends can be quite cyclical and they change quickly. Could the iStick X80 kit potentially kick-start a revival in sub-ohm vaping…

I certainly think it could (and as a sub-ohm vaper at heart, I sure hope it does!), thanks to the accessibility of the device and the absolutely excellent performance that you get from the Eleaf iStick X80 kit!

Many thanks to Eleaf for sending the X80 in for review!

Innokin have been around since before vaping even really took off, producing kits that appeal to every type of vaper, and they’ve picked up a ton of industry awards over time (including plenty of our own Ecigclick awards voted on by vapers themselves!) which recognises the excellence in their products.

One of the most recognisable brands that Innokin produce is the Coolfire line, featuring standout devices such as the original Coolfire 1, Coolfire 4, Coolfire Z50, Coolfire Ultra and the recently reviewed Coolfire PZPulse!

They aren’t just known for the Coolfire range however, and Innokin have released some top drawer products such as the Trine, Trine SE and the Z Pod Nano.

What Can We Expect From The Innokin Coolfire Z80 NEX?

The Innokin Coolfire Z80 NEX is the latest Coolfire device, seamlessly blending quality and innovation.

Known for providing a comfortable form factor, the instantly recognisable Coolfire design and rock solid build quality returns here with the Coolfire Z80 NEX device, along with some upgrades such as an easy slide locking switch and a simplified 0.96″ TFT screen, which puts the focus on what you need and makes vaping easier.

It’s powered by an 18650 battery (sold separately) and has an output power range of 6-80W, with 2A fast charging and six safety protections built in. A smart chipset maintains a stable power output even if your battery is running low, meaning you get a consistent vape with every puff.

A brand new Zenith tank is paired with the Coolfire Z80 NEX kit in the form of the Zenith NEX tank. This has a new sliding Top Fill and Airflow Adjustment system whereby the filling port and air inlet are integrated into one ring, allowing you to easily manage e-liquid filling and airflow adjustment with a simple twist.

The Zenith NEX tank has a 5ml capacity and as such is only available with the non-TPD version of the Coolfire Z80 NEX kit, the TPD (UK) version will be supplied with the Zenith M tank.

Z Coils have received an upgrade, with the upgraded versions making their debut as part of the Coolfire Z80 NEX kit, enhancing the design and optimising the wicking to bring out richer flavours and an elevated vape that is as dependable as ever.

This is a kit that appeals to both mouth to lung and restricted direct lung vapers equally!

Many thanks to Innokin for sending over the Coolfire Z80 NEX kit for review, let’s take a look at what the latest Coolfire device has to offer! As always, all views are my own…

Design & Build Quality

I’ve used a lot of Innokin’s Coolfire devices in my time and I felt right at home with the form factor of the Coolfire Z80 NEX kit as soon as I began to use it.innokin coolfire z80 nex in hand

There’s a rounded back to it that sits really comfortably in the palm of my hand, and a decent weight to the kit as well with an 18650 battery installed.

Build quality on the Coolfire Z80 NEX is very solid overall, which is something that I have come to expect from Innokin products over the years. There’s no sharp edges or anything here, everything is machined well and works as well as it is intended to.

The front of the device sports a good sized power button, which has a relatively short throw to it. This sits above the 0.96″ TFT colour screen, which displays information such as battery level, output wattage, vaping time, coil resistance, output voltage and a puff counter.power button innokin coolfire z80 nex

At the base of the screen is a handy locking switch, with the charging port located just below this, and the + and – adjustment buttons located on the side of the device.

The battery compartment is located at the base, which has has a small handle that you pop up with your finger when unscrewing the cap, and a compartment to house a single 18650 battery.base innokin coolfire z80 nex

On top of the device is a spring loaded 510 connector for you to connect the Zenith NEX or Zenith M tank too, if either of these tanks don’t take your fancy then you can use any other tank that sports a threaded 510 connector.top of innokin coolfire nex z80

Six different colour options are available with the Coolfire Z80 NEX kit, these are Black, Gradient Blue, Silver, Gunmetal, Turquoise and Purple.

Zenith NEX/Zenith M Tank

I did note that my review version came with the Innokin Zenith M tank which I was a little confused about at first, as the marketing blurb for this kit mentioned that it came with the new Zenith NEX tank.zenith m-tank innokin coolfire z80 nex

We did reach out to Innokin who helpfully cleared this up for us. They stated that at present, there is no TPD compliant version of the Zenith NEX tank, therefore the Coolfire Z80 NEX kit actually comes with the Zenith M tank when purchased in a TPD market, and the Zenith NEX tank comes as part of the non-TPD kit.

So, I’ll detail a little bit about the Zenith M tank here!

This tank has a 2ml capacity allowing it to be compatible with TPD regulations, and it features a clear PCTG tank section which gives you full visibility of the e-liquid in your tank. You also get a spare tank section in the kit in case you break the original, which is a nice touch by Innokin!branding innokin coolfire z80 nex

It’s a top filling tank, that features an easy top fill method (more on this below), it comes with two drip tips- a narrow bore one for mouth to lung vaping and a wider bore one for restricted lung vaping. It will also accept any other 510 threaded drip tip.

An adjustable airflow control ring is located at the bottom of the tank, giving you access to a wide range of different airflow options. It is also compatible with Innokin’s range of Z coils.

Quick Start Guide

Battery Installation

No built in battery found here, the Coolfire Z80 NEX kit requires a single high amp 18650 battery and one is not supplied with the kit!

We recommend that you purchase one from a reputable vendor and do not store them loosely when not in use.

Read more in our guide to battery safety here!

To install your 18650 battery, rotate the silver cap on the battery compartment to unscrew it, install the battery positive side up, then replace the battery cap once done.

How to Fill the Zenith M Tank

  • Rotate the top of the tank slightly anti-clockwise until it comes off
  • Then locate the filling port, insert the bottle nozzle of your e-liquid and fill the tank up, taking care not to overfill it.
  • Once done, pop the top of the tank back on and rotate it clockwise to lock it.

Changing the Coil

You can change the coil via the base of the Zenith M tank:

  • Remove the tank from the device
  • Invert the tank
  • Unscrew the base of the tank
  • Slide the old coil out and the new one in
  • Replace the base of the tank.

If you are using a brand new Z Coil for the first time, let e-liquid sit in the tank for five minutes before vaping to allow the cotton to properly absorb the e-liquid.

Operation

oled screen z80 nex

  • Three clicks of the power button turns the device on or off
  • Toggling the locking switch will lock or unlock the buttons
  • To adjust the power output, hold down the + and – buttons for one second until the numbers on screen begin to flash, then use + and – to adjust the output to your desired setting.
  • Press and hold the power and – buttons together for two seconds to access the secondary menu. This allows you to adjust the vape cut off time from 3 to 18 seconds and the screen timeout from 5 to 180 seconds, and also to check the device ID.
  • Press and hold the power and + button for one second to enter the information menu. This displays battery level, voltage, coil resistance, puff count and an option to clear the puff counter and return to the main interface.

Charging

I’d always recommend that you use an external charger purchased from a reputable vendor to charge up any device that has removeable batteries, though I know that this isn’t always possible for some people.

5V/2A fast charging is available through the charging port on the device if you choose to charge the battery in the Coolfire Z80 NEX, so it is recommended that you use the cable supplied with the kit or one compatible with 5V/2A charging.

You should always use a safe power source and ensure the device is charged within sight of you.

Charging speed will depend on the capacity of your 18650 battery and the power output source.

Safety Features

  • LOW VOLT- this is displayed on screen when the battery voltage is too low, and is remedied by charging the battery.

  • LOW RES- This displays if the coil resistance is too low. Again, check the connection between the tank and the device or replace the coil.

How Does The Innokin Coolfire Z80 NEX Perform?

Innokin Z Coils

Formerly known as Zenith coils, Innokin’s range of Z Coils are one of the markets top sellers and they offer options for virtually all styles of vaping.

There are 0.48ohm, 0.5ohm, 0.6ohm, 0.8ohm, 1.2ohm and 1.6ohm coils for mouth to lung vaping, and striking, gold coloured 0.3ohm and 1.0ohm coils for restricted lung vaping.innokin z coil compatibilityZ Coils have recently been upgraded based on user feedback, featuring an enhanced design and optimised wicking for stronger flavour and even denser clouds.

You get two of the latest, upgraded Z Coils included in the box, and here’s my thoughts on how they performed-

0.8ohm MTL Z Coil

As the name suggests, this coil is best suited for mouth to lung vaping with the MTL drip tip, and has a recommended wattage range of 15-18W.

My preference has been to use the 0.8ohm Z Coil with 20mg nicotine salt based e-liquids, and it has been absolutely ideal for those.

Wicking keeps up perfectly, meaning no dry hits or gurgling, and there is plenty of flavour on each and every puff.

0.3ohm Z Coil

This is the coil you’ll want to use for restricted direct lung vaping along with the RDL drip tip, and the recommended wattage range for this coil is 30-40W.innokin z coil

As a restricted direct lung vaper myself, it’s no surprise that this coil was my preferred one!

This worked like a charm for high VG e-liquids (handy as I have a cupboard full of shortfills!), providing dense clouds and plenty of warm and tasty flavour.

The vape from this was up there with the best that I’ve tried from a sub ohm tank recently, and I’m still very much enjoying it as I type this review!

Coil Lifespan

These coils wick extremely well, I tested blends up to 70/30 VG/PG and the Z Coils showed no signs of struggle whatsoever.

I have found that fruity and sweet blends perform best with these coils, as long as they aren’t too heavy on the sweetener, I got just under a weeks worth of use out of a single Z coil when vaping fruity e-liquids.

Where I’ve found them to struggle is with particularly ‘heavy’ e-liquids, such as a salted caramel macchiato blend that I do very much enjoy. That has actually wiped the floor with a Z Coil in just over a days worth of use!

Airflow

A bottom airflow system is used on the Zenith M tank, and a top airflow system is used on the Zenith NEX tank.

There’s a wealth of options available for airflow on the Zenith M tank, ranging from a tight mouth to lung hit right up to a borderline unrestricted lung hit.

If you like a dense, cloudy vape then the Zenith M is no slouch in this department. With the 0.3ohm coil and the airflow opened up, this is more than capable of kicking out plenty of vapour!

The only downside I found here was that the airflow control ring is quite hard to adjust when the tank is on the device, often necessitating the removal of the tank from the device in order to adjust the airflow.

Battery Life

This is very much dependent on the 18650 battery that you are using in the device, as well as the coil resistance and the selected output wattage.

I used a Molicell 2800mAh 25A 18650 battery with my Coolfire Z80 NEX, and this will last me the best part of a full day when vaping with a 0.3ohm Z Coil and the power output set to 35W.

Pros

  • Smooth and flavoursome vape
  • Beginner friendly vaping kit
  • Mouth to lung and restricted direct lung drip tips in the box
  • Includes spare o-rings and replacement tank section
  • Handy locking switch saves you from having to turn the device off when not in use
  • Solid build quality

Cons

  • Coil lifespan isn’t the best with certain e-liquids
  • Does not have a built-in battery which will be a downside for some users
  • Airflow control can be difficult to adjust unless you remove the Zenith M tank from the device
  • TPD compliant kit doesn’t actually come with the new Zenith NEX tank.

Final Verdict

I don’t really like to start off summarizing this review with a negative, but I did find it a little disappointing that the TPD version of the Coolfire Z80 NEX did not come with the new Zenith NEX tank, with the Zenith M tank supplied instead. I love a good top airflow tank!

That being said, the Zenith M tank along with the new and upgraded Z Coils still provides a very enjoyable and flavoursome vape with an easy to use top filling system and a lot of different airflow options.

The Coolfire Z80 NEX device boasts some pretty rock solid build quality, which is something that Innokin have become very well known for over the years.

All in all, this is a solidly performing kit that appeals to both mouth to lung vapers and restricted direct lung ones too.

It’s easy to get to grips with and provides all the power you need for a single 18650 battery set up, so if you are looking to make the jump from a pod system to something with a little more power, this is well worth considering.

Fans of Innokin’s Coolfire kits will really like this latest one, and I’m sure this kit will draw in some brand new Coolfire fans too!

Many thanks to Innokin for sending the Coolfire Z80 NEX in for review!

We’ve got another new addition to the Voopoo Vinci stable to look at with the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220!

spark 220 in hand

Voopoo are a massive name in the vaping industry and have grown from strength to strength since they were founded by ICCPP in 2016. They pride themselves on providing award-winning vaping kits that cater to every vaping style.

Following on from the Voopoo Vinci E120, the Vinci Spark 220 joins a list of established stablemates such as the Voopoo Vinci 3, Vinci Pod Kit, Vinci Q, Vinci Pod SE and the Vinci Pod Royal Edition.

The Vinci range isn’t the only one that Voopoo offer, one of their most notable ranges is the Argus line. We’ve checked out a few of their most recent releases such as the Argus Z2 and the Argus Bar Pro Max – both of which are worth checking out!

Will the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 set itself apart from the other top rated vape mods? Read on to find out more…

What Can We Expect From The Voopoo Vinci Spark 220?

Voopoo want you to ‘reach for the stars’ with the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220, one of the lightest and yet most advanced 220W box mod kits on the market!

vinci spark bannerFeaturing a metallic box design and an Aluminium Alloy construction, the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 weighs only 108 grams. Making it 30% lighter than other similar box mods.

vinci spark 220 weight

It also provides an out of this world experience with the starlight panel display and nebula-styled animations.

vinci spark 220 lighting

There’s a multi-function button that allows you to fire the device and change the settings with an audible clicking sound. Plus a lock switch is present for convenience, allowing you to lock the device when not using it rather than having to turn it on and off.

As the name might suggest, the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 is capable of outputting up to a mighty 220W, making it a true vaping powerhouse. It takes two 18650 batteries that can be easily replaced thanks to the magnetic battery door cover!

Three power output modes are supported by the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220. Smart Mode automatically sets the power output for you, RBA mode allowing you to adjust the power to your own liking and TC-TRC mode catering to fans of temperature controlled vaping.

An intuitive interface is paired with one of the highest quality full colour screens ever found on a box mod. The 1.47″ TFT colour screen being 2.4x the size of a regular box mod and boasting 4x the resolution!

vinci spark 220 screen

It’s customisable too, with the ability to personalise the UI themes and an animated starlight coating is present.

Completing the Vinci Spark 220 kit is Voopoo’s renowned Uforce-X tank. It features a top airflow intake design to prevent leaks and provide an unparalleled direct-to-lung vaping experience.

By utilising PnP X coil technology, you can expect to get up to 100ml of consistent flavour from your e-liquids with no leaking or burnt taste. And when it is time to replace your coil, the PnP system makes it easy. Plus there’s a huge range of different coils to pick from in the PnP X range!

vinci spark 220 coil compatibility

There are seven different colour finishes to pick from: Tech Silver, Midnight Black, Dark Red, Rose Red, Spring Green, Starlit Blue and Space Blue.

Many thanks to Voopoo for sending the Vinci Spark 220 in for review!

vinci spark 220 kit contentsI know Voopoo have done this before with devices like the Drag 5, but including a replacement glass tank section and spares such as O-rings for the Uforce-X tank really shows that Voopoo care about the customer experience. Rather than some other manufacturers that don’t include spare parts in the box.

Design & Build Quality

So, measurements wise, the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 measures 148mm x 45mm x 29mm including the Uforce-X tank and weighs 108g, which is actually quite light for a dual 18650 box mod.

vinci spark 220 side view

There’s no mistaking it though, this is a big old kit and certainly not the most pocket friendly one you will get your hands on!

It does feel quite lightweight though, thanks to the aluminium alloy construction, yet at the same time it feels very solid and robust. The Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 has certainly stood up to the beating I have put it through since I received it and the finish has stood up to heavy use too!

I was sent the Dark Red version and my, this really is a gorgeous kit! I love how the Red colour gradually segues into Black. This really does look the part.

vinci spark 220 top view

When you vape, not only does an animation play on the screen, but small white LEDs flash under the screen as part of the animated starlight coating. It’s a nice little touch that helps the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 stand out.

vinci spark 220 lights on

The 1.47″ TFT colour screen is another standout feature here, bigger and clearer than a lot of other similar box mods that I have used. This displays information such as the output wattage, output mode, puff count, coil resistance and also the individual status of each 18650 battery.

You also have the ability to customise the UI too, with three different themes available right out of the box.

Another unique feature of the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 is the multifunctional wheel button located on the side of the device. This gives you one button operation of the device, scrolling through settings by rotating the button or push it in to fire, with a satisfying audible click.

vinci spark 220 side view

Opposite the wheel button is the locking switch, giving you the ability to lock the device at the flick of a switch when not in use. Just below this is the USB-C charging port.

On the rear of the device is a magnetic battery compartment cover, giving quick access to the battery compartment. The Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 takes two 18650 batteries, which are not included in the kit as standard.

vinci spark 220 battery

The mod features a spring-loaded 510 threaded connector at the top, which you screw the included Uforce-X tank into for a secure connection. But this also gives you the ability to use other 510 threaded tanks if you so wish.

voopoo vinci spark 220 510 connection

Uforce-X Tank

The second half of the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 kit is the Uforce-X tank. This features a Stainless Steel construction with a glass tank section and 510 threading for compatibility with the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 mod.

vinci spark 220 tank

This tank features a 2ml capacity in TPD regulated markets and a 5.5ml capacity in markets outside of the TPD. A slide top filling mechanism at the top makes filling the tank easy and you can swap PnP X coils quickly via the base of the tank.

vinci spark 220 uforce x features

A top airflow design is used to leakproof the tank and there are two huge dual airflow intakes at the top that can be adjusted via the rotating airflow control. A wide bore drip tip is included with the tank, which can be replaced if you so wish.

vinci spark 220 mouthpiece

In the kit, Voopoo provide a replacement tank section, which is handy if you accidentally break the glass in your Uforce-X tank. The replacement glass actually increases the capacity of the tank! So you’ll get a bump to 3.5ml or 6.5ml depending on which market you purchase the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 in.

Quick Start Guide

Battery Installation

Before you get underway with the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 kit, you’ll need two high-amp 18650 batteries, as the kit does not come with batteries included.

Make sure that the batteries are paired, from the same manufacturer and are rated for 25A and over!

Always make sure you purchase your batteries from a reputable vendor and do not store them loosely when not in use. We tell you more about battery safety in our guide here.

vinci spark 220 battery install

The battery compartment will house the batteries snugly. I highly recommend making use of the included battery ribbon and inserting your batteries on top of this, to make it easier to remove them.

vinci spark 220 rear view

Changing The Coil

After you have inserted your batteries, it’s time to decide whether you are going to make use of the 0.15ohm or 0.3ohm PnP X coil. These are both spare in the box and there isn’t a coil inserted in the Uforce-X tank to begin with.

Of course, as this tank is compatible with the range of PnP X coils, you can also use a wide range of different coil resistances.

Unscrew the base of the tank and simply slide your selected coil in, before screwing the base of the tank back on. Hey presto, you are almost ready to go, next it is time to fill the tank!

vinci spark 220 coil replacement

How to Fill the Tank

Voopoo have designed the Uforce-X tank to provide hassle free filling and it possesses a great sliding top fill system.

Locate the ‘push’ and triangle icon at the top of the tank and yes, give it a push to reveal the filling port.

pnp x push to open

Then pop your bottle nozzle in and fill the tank all the way up!

pnpx filling

If you are using a new PnP X coil for the first time, let the e-liquid stand in the tank for five minutes before vaping. This is so that the cotton in the coil is fully saturated with e-liquid, thus prolonging the lifespan of the coil and reducing the chance of burnt or dry hits.

Operation

vinci spark 220 operationYou are going to want to turn the device on and to do that simply press the multifunctional button five times. Pressing it five times again will turn it off.

To lock the device, rather than turning it off, push the locking switch (opposite to the multifunctional button) down and ‘LOCK SWITCH’ will be displayed on screen with a locked icon. Push the locking switch up to unlock the device and ‘UNLOCK’ will display on screen.

vinci spark 220 lock

Adjusting the power output can be done by rotating the multifunctional button clockwise, rotating it counterclockwise will decrease the power output.

Clicking the power button five times will take you into the menu screen.

Menu options

  • Mode: allows you to switch between Smart Mode (which automatically adjusts output power based on the resistance of the coil), RBA mode (which allows you to set your own output power setting from 5-220W) and TC-TCR for temperature controlled vaping.vinci spark 220 modes
  • Theme: customise the UI with a choice of three different themes
  • Switch: customise the locking switch to lock the whole device or just the wattage adjustment
  • Animation: switch vaping animations on and off
  • Light: switch the light display on and off
  • Puff clean: clear all puff data
  • Battery evaluation: evaluate the health of your batteries (only available with the 0.15ohm PnP X coil)
  • About device: displays the current software version
  • Exit: exits the main menu.

Software is also upgradable when using a USB Type-C data cable to connect the mod to your computer. The latest software versions will be available from the support page on Voopoo’s official website.

Charging

With any device that uses removable batteries, where possible you should charge the batteries up outside of the mod using a suitable external charger purchased from a reputable vendor.

If you do charge your batteries in the mod itself, then it is recommended that you use the included Type-C charging cable or one compatible with 5V/3A charging. Always ensure you are using a safe power source to charge the mod up and don’t charge it up out of sight.

Charging speeds will depend on the capacity of the batteries that you are using and the power output source.

Safety Features

Safety is paramount with the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 and this device boasts 8 second vaping overtime, short-circuit, low battery, overcharge, over temperature, output over-current and reverse battery polarity protections.

vinci spark 220 protections

How Does The Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 Perform?

In the box, you get the 0.15ohm and 0.3ohm PnP X coils to try out. Voopoo leave it up to you to decide which one to use first as the Uforce-X tank does not have a coil pre-installed.

By using the PnP X platform, you get a large range of coils that are compatible with the Uforce-X tank, so you aren’t just restricted to the two included coils!

You can pick from 0.15ohm, 0.2ohm, 0.3ohm, 0.45ohm, 0.6ohm, 0.8ohm and 1.0ohm coils, offering options for mouth to lung right through to direct lung vaping.

That being said, the Uforce-X tank isn’t really set up for mouth to lung vaping. This is a tank designed for high-powered direct lung/restricted direct lung vaping, so ideally you won’t want to use a higher resistance coil than the 0.6ohm one at most. 0.15ohm to 0.45ohm ideally!

0.15ohm PnP X Coil

If you are looking at taking advantage of the sizeable amount of power that the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 is capable of outputting, then you’ll want to use the 0.15ohm PnP X coil.

This coil is capable of wicking high VG e-liquid quickly, making it an ideal one for high powered sub-ohm vaping and producing huge levels of dense, room filling vapour.

It isn’t just capable of chucking out the clouds, it provides a warm and tasty vape too.

A word of caution, the Uforce-X tank will get very warm when pushing high wattage through it and the vape itself will be quite hot too. To reduce this, vape in shorter bursts and make sure the airflow is opened right up.

0.3ohm PnP X Coil

I’ve had a lot of experience with the 0.3ohm PnP X coil over time and it remains one of my favourite stock coils to date!

This is perfect for my restricted lung vaping style and the flavour is absolutely fantastic in the 37-40W region. This coil really showcases the flavour notes in complex e-liquids and is a solid all-rounder with all types of e-liquid.

This can also produce some quite impressive levels of vapour too, especially in combination with the huge airflow slots on the Uforce-X tank!

Coil Lifespan

PnP X coils are touted to be able to withstand up to 100ml worth of refills. I’ve used them for a fair while but to be honest I have never measured exactly how much e-liquid they have got through!

On average, I will get over a weeks worth of use from one of these coils and they will wick pretty much any type of e-liquid you can throw at them. The design of the coil and the tank ensures I get a leak free vaping experience too.

At the time of writing I have been using this device on a daily basis and both the 0.15ohm and 0.3ohm coils are still going strong with no signs of flavour degradation yet!

Airflow

Just take a look at the airflow slots on the Uforce-X tank. They are absolutely huge!

Even just by looking at this tank, you can tell it means business in the vapour department.

Airflow is adjusted by rotating the incredibly smooth airflow control ring and the selected airflow setting stays in place too. I haven’t had issues with it accidentally adjusting in my pocket.

With the airflow slots set to fully open, this delivers room-filling levels of vapour, even with it closed down. Most definitely an unrestricted lung hit here! When you close the airflow down this will still kick out clouds that compete with the best of them.

I will usually run this with the airflow set to around a third open with the 0.3ohm coil and I find that plenty enough for me.

Battery Life

Battery life will be dependent on the capacity of the 18650 batteries that you are using in the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220, as well as coil resistance and wattage level.

When using Molicell 2800mAh 25A batteries, I will get a full days worth of vaping with the 0.3ohm PnP X coil in the 35-40W region.

When using the 0.15ohm PnP X coil and cranking the wattage up, I’ll only get a few hours of use before I need to charge my batteries back up!

Temperature Controlled Vaping

Temperature Controlled Vaping is supported by the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220. Its supports Ni200, Titanium, SS316 and SS430 coils, with an adjustable temperature range of 200-600F/ 100-315C.

I didn’t have any temperature controlled compatible coils to test out with this device I am afraid, though the option is there if you are a TC vaper!

Pros

  • Outstanding looks
  • Solid build quality
  • Great flavour from the PnP X coils
  • Capable of producing huge clouds
  • One button operation
  • Variable wattage and temperature controlled vaping
  • Long lifespan from the PnP X coils
  • Spares included in the kit
  • Excellent top filling system
  • Device can be customised

Cons

  • This is a really big kit, not the most pocket friendly one to carry around!
  • Battery health evaluation is only available with the 0.15ohm coil
  • Tank gets a little toasty at high wattage
  • Uforce-X tank also gets through a lot of e-liquid

Final Verdict

With the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220, Voopoo really cement themselves at the top of the sub ohm box mod vaping game and they continue to find new ways to set the bar for everyone else.

This is a device that is packing it all, from great looks, to all the power you could pretty much need in your hands. Even temperature controlled vaping is catered for, which is something I don’t often see with box mods these days!

It’s also customisable too, so you can personalise your device and ensure that it turns heads.

I’m pleased to see that following on from the Drag 5, Voopoo have continued to use the Uforce-X tank as this is one of the best sub ohm tanks around.

Plus, by having compatibility with the PnP X coil platform, there are loads of different coils to choose from. These are widely sold with lots of online and bricks and mortar vendors, making it easy to get hold of replacements.

If you are after a full fat, high powered box mod then the Voopoo Vinci Spark 220 is definitely one to consider. I’ve really struggled to find any faults with this one at all, and it’s a lovely looking device too!

Many thanks to Voopoo for sending the Vinci Spark 220 in for review!

We love the design. The screen is nice and clear, buttons well placed and the central placement of the tank finishes the look of nicely.

Performance doesn’t disappoint either, all you need to get up and running is a couple of 18650 batteries.

3. Voopoo Argus GT 2 – (Best Mod For Durability)

argus gt 2 best modWe like Voopoo. They have produced some of the better vape devices over the last few years. One of the latest is the Voopoo Argus GT 2.

It’s on the bigger side but still ticks all the boxes. It looks superb, great form factor, the Gene chip is a top performer.

The device is available in ‘kit form’ with the new MAAT tank, if you opt for this the tank is a great performer. But you can of course use any tank on top of this.

Plenty of power is available, upto 200W, and backed up by the dual 18650 batteries the battery life is good. Plus the mod is IP68 certified so it can withstand drops and accidental spillages.

4. JAC Vapour Series S22 – (Best Vape Mod for Beginners)

JAC Vapour series S22 vape modThe Series S22 by Jacvapour is kind of in between a vape pen and box mod but don’t let that put you off. This is a fantastic vape mod for beginners. However, if you are a newer vaper this is one of the best box mods to start your journey, it’s as easy as it gets.

It doesn’t have the features you may find in other devices but that’s kind of the point. You fill the tank, pop it on the battery and away you go. The supplied S22 tank is a great performer as well.

It offers a mouth to lung vape and a good sub ohm coil for direct to lung vaping. The mod automatically detects what coil you have installed and delivers the power accordingly, no variable wattage settings to mess about with here.

The mod is lightweight in the hand while still retaining a top quality build. Add to this a 2600mAh integrated battery and it also offers plenty of uninterrupted vaping. This does come as a kit so may not be suitable for those wanting to use their own tank.

5. VOOPOO Argus MT – (Best Integrated Battery Mod)

Best integrated battery mod - voopoo argus mtDid we mention we like VOOPOO vape mods? Well, here is another. There were two versions of this vape mod released at the same time. The Argus MT and the Argus XT. The difference being that the former features a 3000mAh integrated battery and the XT a replaceable battery (21700/18650).

Both are excellent, it really comes down to your preference on battery. The MT we are focusing on here is the integrated battery version. Featuring a 3000mAh battery, the MT can fire from 5-100W. It also has the option of various modes such as Turbo, Smart, RBA and Temp Control. So plenty to keep the more advanced vaper happy.

Add to this, what seems to be standard for most Argus devices, IP68 waterproof | dustproof | shockproof and we have a mod that can take a bash or three.

On top of the kit version VOOPOO have included the new MAAT Tank. This delivers great flavour and cloud for the direct to lung sub ohm vapers out there.

Last but not least the ARGUS MT is capable of fast charging via 3A Type C port.

6. Vaporesso Target 100 – (Best Compact Vape Mod)

Best compact mod - Vaporesso Target 100
A new addition to the Target range of mods from Vaporesso is the Target 100. This device was actually released alongside the Target 200 which is the dual battery version. Both devices rated highly in our recent tests.

Back to the Target 100! What do we like about this vape mod? First we like the compact form factor and the design. The rubber micro braiding grip not only adds to the aesthetics but also makes it comfortable in the hand. Add the well sized screen and we have a very good looking mod.

Second is the performance. The Target 100 can take 18650 or 21700 batteries and power up-to 100W. The 21700 in particular adds that little extra in terms of battery life. With the range of functions available for selection from the easy to navigate menu you will easily find the right setting to get the most from your vape.

If opting for the kit version, the included iTank and mesh coils gained near top marks for flavour. So no slouch for the sub ohm vapers amongst us.

Very good setup all round.

7. JAC Vapour Series B DNA75 – (Best DNA Vape Mod)

JAC Vapour Series B DNA75 Black EditionThe Series B DNA75 mod from Jacvapour has been an excellent addition to the box mod world.

I absolutely love this thing. It’s a classy looking device, the new model features a premium black PVD finish (often found on high end watches) with a matte fingerprint resistant coating.  It’s a hard wearing finish that is more resistant to chips and scratching.

It’s not all about looks though – as my mother used to tell me – the DNA75 has all the functions you would expect and is powered by a removable 18650 battery. Add to that the quality of the build and we have a little star of a vape mod.

Oh… Did I mention the size, as you can see from the image above the Jacvapour Series B nestles nicely into the palm of the hand and my hands aren’t the biggest.

One of the best vape mods to date and a worthy entry into our top vape mod list.

8. VOOPOO Drag E60 – (Best AIO Style Mod)

Best Mod voopoo Drag e60The Drag range of mods are some of the best devices on the market when it comes to quality and durability. Not only that but they look the business, we are big fans of the design.

The Drag E60 is features a big integrated battery (2550mAh) which allows good vape time even at the higher wattages. Despite the impressive battery the mod is still portable and compact.

It offers an impressive wattage of upto 60W, more than enough for most users, and comes with the new PNP pod 2 with easy to fit ‘Plug n Play’ coils. In our testing both coils included in the kit we received (PNP TW30 0.3ohm | PNP TW20 0.2ohm) knocked out superb flavour.

The mod is super compact and feels great in the hand with it’s leather grip. It feels and looks a lot more expensive than it is.

If an all in one (AIO) style vape mod is something that floats your boat then be sure to take a look at the E60.

9. Aspire MIXX – (Best Side by Side Mod)

Aspire Mixx 18650 Mode HandcheckHave to say we love the look of the Aspire Mixx mod. I mean come on, check that out!

Aspire have partnered with Sunbox. An Italian mod maker that produces some of the best looking devices on the market. Good news is, we don’t have to pay Sunbox prices for this beauty.

The Mixx is primarily powered by a 18650 battery but you can also adjust the mod, making it look even smaller, to accommodate a single 18350 battery.

It supports variable wattage/voltage as well as bypass mode and can fire upto 60W. Fairly basic when compared to other mod functions but if, like most, you just want to vape in wattage mode then you’re good to go.

On the tank front as long as your tank is 24mm or under it will fit in the Mixx.

What is a Vape Mod?

What is a vape Mod?
Vape mods come in all shapes and sizes. They come with integrated batteries as well as replaceable batteries. The latter of which will require some research in to battery safety.

They also come in varying wattage right the way up to 300W. More on that below.

The image above is a basic diagram of a box mod but it gives you an idea of the features and functions that are included. These are:

  • Fire Button (This activates the mod sending power from the battery to the tank)
  • Battery (Integrated or replaceable)
  • Display Screen – Not all mods have a screen. Those that do display information such as wattage, coil resistance (ohms) and battery life.
  • Wattage adjustment buttons
  • Function button – Not displayed above but this button is usually below the wattage adjustment buttons. It is used to access the menu on a mod. The menu will allow you to change various settings on your mod.
  • USB Charge Port – It is only recommended to directly charge the battery in a mod if it is integrated. Replaceable batteries should be charged using an external charger.
  • 510 Connection – This is on top of the mod and where the tank connects

The above, in a nutshell, are the features of a vape mod.

Vape Mod Buying Guide

For Beginners:

Just because you’ve seen a MOD with a 200W or even 300W power output doesn’t mean this is the best box mod or more importantly the best vape MOD for you.

The likelihood of you actually using anywhere near that much power is not a reality for most.

50-90W is one of the most popular ranges that will cater to most sub ohm tanks on the market.

So there are many ways of approaching what would be the ideal device for you.

The first is considering what kind of vaper you are and what you expect to do with your box mod.

  1. Are you looking to move on from a pod vape or Vape Pen (Stick) style e cigarette?
  2. Do you use normal mouth to lung vape tanks where the coils are 1.0Ohm plus? Tanks such as (or similar to) the Aspire Nautilus or Innokin Endura T18/T20?

If so then you really don’t need a 200W box mod. These types of tanks typically need no more than 25-30W of power.

Our list features beginner vape mods that are great for mouth to lung type tanks.

There is an upside if you decide to go for a mod with higher wattage to use with a low wattage tank. The battery life could be extended considerably.

It’s worth noting care needs to be taken if going for higher wattage devices, set the power too high and your coils will burn and of course be ruined.

For Intermediate Vapers

  1. Are you using sub ohm tanks (SMOK TFV/Aspire Cleito/ Horizon Falcon)?
  2. Or wanting to explore sub ohm vaping but don’t want to build your own RDA’s?

If so you will need a vape mod capable of handling coil resistances lower than 1.0 ohm. Most of the popular sub ohm tanks use coils around 0.15-0.5 ohms.

Double check the coil resistance of your tank before buying a vape mod to be sure they are compatible. This info will be displayed clearly on the product listing.

All of the box mods above are sub ohm capable.

I use a mix of tanks, one of which is the Aspire Nautilus 2s. This is mainly used when I’m going out as the performance is good yet it doesn’t spit out the clouds that a sub ohm tank does. I for one don’t want to be blowing out humongous clouds when I’m out in a bar!

70% of my use is with sub ohm tanks around the 40-65W mark depending on the tank I’m using. This is perfect for me and will likely be where a high percentage of sub ohm vapers will sit.

There are sub ohm tanks that come with 0.15-0.3 Ohm coils (Aspire Cleito Pro, SMOK TFV16, Freemax Mesh Pro) and to get the best out of them they need to be used at a higher wattage, around 50-85W and for some maybe even 100W+.

So if you can see yourself using coils in this range then be sure to buy a box mod with enough power.

TIP: If a coil requires 80W output then you will want to buy a vape mod that is capable of firing 100W+. Try not to use the mod at full wattage output. This will generally result in poor battery life.

For Advanced Vapers

Or are you in the more advanced bracket of vapers that uses RBA’s almost exclusively?

This is still kind of similar to the advice given for sub ohm tank users above. You will need a device with a high wattage output that can handle low resistance builds.

Although if you are at this level then you likely know this already. It all depends on what resistance you are building at. So make sure the mod you buy is capable of handling any low resistance build you may vape.

This information, again, will be found on a product listing.

Integrated Battery (built in) or Replaceable?

  • Do you want a device that has a built in battery and you simply recharge using a USB cable?
  • Or do you want a box mod with a removable battery?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with buying a unit with an integrated battery (these are some of my favourite devices) but they are in essence disposable products.

When your battery dies the whole unit needs replacing. This sounds worse than it is in reality.

Under normal use a Lithium Ion battery should last a long long time although performance will degrade slightly over time.

You will most likely be well on to your new shiny new box mod before the current one dies a death.

The other option is a vape mod with removable batteries. This allows you to just replace the battery when it dies or decreases in performance rather than replacing the whole MOD.

Most vape mods that require replaceable batteries, if not all, require you to buy batteries separately and if you don’t have a suitable charger then you will also need one of these.

The most popular size of battery used is the 18650 but newer designs are catering to 20700 and 21700 batteries of which usually have better run times and can be used at higher wattages.

You will also (definitely) need to learn what batteries are suitable for each device. I can’t state how important that is! Read our guide on batteries for sub ohm vaping here.

So there are lots of things to be clear with before making that purchase and it’s always recommended to take a look at Ecigclicks individual vape reviews and reviews from other sources before coming to a final decision.

If you are new to sub ohm vaping please read our beginners guide to sub ohm vaping here if that’s the direction you want to go.

I’ve got an absolute beast of a kit to look at in today’s review thanks to Voopoo. The latest addition to Voopoo’s famous Drag range, the Voopoo Drag 5!Voopoo Drag 5 review

For those that somehow may not have heard of Voopoo before, they were established by ICCPP in 2016 and are based out of China.

In that time their growth has been huge, they are truly classed as an industry titan and are one of the world leaders when it comes to manufacturing vaping devices.

We’ve been very fortunate to be able to have a look at a lot of Voopoo’s most recent releases, such as the Drag S2, Argus P1s, Argus G2 Mini and most recently, the superb Argus E40.

What Can We Expect From The Voopoo Drag 5?

Building upon the success of its predecessor, the Drag 4, Voopoo have redesigned the chassis of the Drag 4 device and included their newest high powered sub ohm tank, the Voopoo Uforce-X, to take full advantage of the maximum 177W output of the Drag 5 device!Voopoo Drag 5 with Uforce X tank

Starting off with the Drag 5 device, alongside the 5-177W of power that you have at your disposal, you have the latest version of Voopoo’s smart Gene TT2.0 chipset which offers four different vaping modes including smart, RBA, Eco and temperature control.

A smartly designed C-Frame sliding battery cover gives you easy access to the battery compartment, which takes two 18650 batteries.

Just one 18650 won’t do when it comes to powering this beast of a kit!voopoo drag 5 in box

And the battery evaluation system allows you to check up on the health of your batteries, with the Gene TT2.0 chipset telling you whether your battery is suitable for continued use, enabling smarter management of your device. Type-C 5V/3A battery charging is also present.

Voopoo’s Uforce-X tank is compatible with their latest ecosystem of coils, the PnP X coil range which boast a mesh coil system with thermo-stable cotton, a 4 layer leakproof design and can withstand up to 100ml of e-liquid refills before they need to be changed.uforce x tank pnp x

PnP X coils are available in 0.15ohm, 0.2ohm, 0.3ohm and 0.6ohm options so they have options there for mouth to lung, restricted direct lung and direct to lung vaping options.

Not sure what those terms mean? Then check out our guide to vaping styles.

Alongside compatibility with the PnP X range of coils, the Uforce-X tank is designed to withstand high powered sub ohm vaping sessions, has a 2ml (TPD version) or 5.5ml (non-TPD version) capacity, a sliding top filling mechanism and massive dual airflow intakes for dense cloud production.

This is a kit designed for huge clouds and big flavour!

It’s been a fair while since I’ve had a high powered kit to get stuck into, and with Voopoo making some of the best vape mods in recent times I was really excited to take a look at the Voopoo Drag 5!

Let’s have a deeper look at this set-up, as always all views are my own…

Kit Contents

kit contentsI absolutely love the rose gold coloured presentation box that the Voopoo Drag 5 comes in, this really feels like you have purchased a real high end product here.

Inside this box you’ll find-

  • Voopoo Drag 5 Device
  • Voopoo Uforce-X tank
  • Spare Glass Tank Section
  • Voopoo PnP X 0.15ohm coil
  • Voopoo PnP X 0.3ohm coil
  • User Manual

Including a spare glass tank and replacement silicone seals is an excellent addition from Voopoo, giving you spare parts at no additional cost to yourself.

It’s quite rare that a company includes a spare tank section for you, rather than making you buy a new tank section or even a whole tank if you break the tank section, so hats off to Voopoo for this.

Design and Build Quality

Seven colour finishes are available for the Drag 5 kit, with Black, Silver, Gradient Blue, Gradient Brown, Green, Sakura Pink and Sunset Orange available.

Five out of the seven kits will come with a black Uforce-X tank, but if you purchase the Silver or Sakura Pink versions you will get a silver Uforce-X tank.voopoo drag 5 leather side

I was sent the Sunset Orange kit for review and oh my, it is an absolute stunner!

The zinc alloy gradient colour finish absolutely shines in direct light and the checkerboard finish on the leather C-Frame battery cover is simply sumptuous. This is a real head turner of a vape kit that is for sure, it is a real beauty!

Sizing

Now this isn’t the smallest, pocket friendly kit around, it weighs 223g in total alone and that is without two 18650 batteries inside. But, for a dual 18650 battery mod, that is to be expected.drag 5 in hand

That size does mean that it is very robust however. Pleasingly, the finish doesn’t seem to be a magnet for fingerprints or micro scratches, but it is recommended to clean the leather part with a soft cotton cloth from time to time.

OLED Screen

On the front of the Drag 5 is a large, clear screen which allows you to clearly see information such as the power setting, output mode, battery life, puff count, output voltage, resistance and a puff timer.voopoo drag 5 oled screen

I found the screen was easy to see in any light condition. You can also choose to have a flame animation play as you take a puff if you so wish!

Above the screen is a large power button which is satisfyingly clicky with a short amount of travel and below the screen is the multifunctional flip switch, the plus and minus buttons and the USB-C charging port.

Battery Compartment

Voopoo have designed one of the best battery covers I have come across on a device yet, with a sliding C-Frame kept in place by a magnetic connection.battery cover slide

This has a leather panel with a lovely, smooth feel to it, and it is functional too- allowing you to access the battery compartment easily simply by sliding it open.

You can actually remove and replace the C-Frame battery cover too with a range of different options to purchase separately, allowing you another level of customisation over your kit.battery compartment drag 5

There’s a battery ribbon found within the battery compartment, and you would be well advised to use this when inserting the required two 18650 batteries, as the batteries fit very snugly into the compartment and you’ll struggle to get them back out again without using the ribbon!batteries in the drag 5 by voopoo

510 Connection

And oh, what is this, a 510 connector on the top of the Drag 5 device?!

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen one of these on a kit, mainly because most manufacturers seem to use a proprietary magnetic connection for the device and tank, essentially limiting you to using the included tank or a very small selection of tanks.510 connection

If you haven’t come across a device with a 510 connector before, essentially you screw your tank into the device rather than clipping it in with a magnetic connection.

This means that you can use any tank on this device that has a 510 connector, not just the Uforce-X tank that is included with the kit.

510 base of uforce x tankWhich is handy if you don’t get on with the Uforce-X tank and want to use a different one!

It wasn’t all that long ago that all devices used to come with a 510 connector!

The Uforce-X tank is manufactured from stainless steel and has a glass tank section which is a bit of a rarity these days, as most tanks seem to come with a polycarbonate tank section as it is cheaper!

This gives you a clear view of how much e-liquid you have left in the tank. You also get a spare glass tank section included in the kit, handy if you manage to damage the original one.tank on voopoo drag 5 mod

A 5.5ml capacity is found on the non TPD version, and the TPD version has a 2ml capacity.

My only gripe with this tank section is that the 5.5ml capacity version slightly overhangs the sides of the Drag 5, which might irk you if you are OCD about that sort of thing.

On the top of the tank is a wide bore drip tip, designed to allow a large amount of vapour production into your mouth, and this can be removed if you wish to use your own one. wide bore drip tipThere’s also the sliding filling port cover and the two huge airflow cutouts, as well as a threaded 510 connector found at the base.sliding fill port

Compatible with the PnP X series of coils from Voopoo, you can easily install your coil through the base of the tank. Just unscrew the base, slide the coil in, replace the base and you are good to go.

Quick Start

Two high-capacity 18650 batteries are required to power the Drag 5 and they need to be inserted before use, make sure you grab high amp 18650 batteries from a reputable battery vendor and pair these up!

So, you’ve got your batteries installed and your tank filled, what next?

Well, you need to turn the Drag 5 on, and this is done by clicking the power button five times, or by toggling the multi-function switch if this is set to ‘on/off’.buttons on drag 5 vape mod

Plus and minus allow you to adjust the output power (or temperature limit if in temperature control mode) and if you want to lock that setting in then quick press the power button three times.

Accessing the menu is done by holding down the plus and minus buttons. The first option you are presented with is the mode adjustment, which allows you to switch between four different output modes. These are-

  • Smart mode, whereby the Gene TT2.0 chipset will automatically select a power output for you determined by the resistance of your coil, though you’ll still be able to adjust the power output manually if you so wish.
  • RBA mode, which allows you to select power output yourself from 5W all the way up to 177W!
  • Eco mode, whereby power saving mode will be activated and output will be limited to conserve battery life.
  • TC mode, this is temperature control mode and you need to use a coil suitable for
temperature control to use this. The Drag 5 supports Ni200, Titanium, SS316 and SS430 coils in this mode and has a temperature range of 200-600F/100-315C. Holding down the fire and minus buttons will allow you to switch between Fahrenheit and Celsius, holding down fire and plus allows you to adjust the wattage output from 5-80W.

Other menu options after this are:

  • ‘Colour’- allowing you to change the UI colour
  • ‘Bat Eval’ which accesses the battery evaluation section which tells you about the health of your batteries
  • ‘Puff Reset’ which resets the puff counter
  • ‘Theme’ which gives you the option of turning the flame animation on or off
  • ‘About Device’ which gives you device information.

Software is also upgradeable, you’ll need to use the included USB-C cable for this, plug the Drag 5 into your computer and download the latest software upgrade from Voopoo’s official website.

Six safety protections are also built into the device, with 8 second vaping overtime, short-circuit, overcharge, output over-current, low battery and chip over-temperature protections all present.

How To Fill The Uforce-X Tank

Filling the Uforce-X tank is an absolute dream thanks to the sliding top fill system, and you don’t even need to remove the tank in order to fill it up.filling the voopoo uforce x tank

Just use your thumb (or finger) to slide the top of the tank open, right where it says ‘Push’ (handy that!) and the filling port will be revealed. It’s very smooth and easy to slide open.

You’ve got ample room to pop your bottle nozzle into the filling port, just take care not to overfill the tank as e-liquid will spill out of the top airflow cut-outs if you do.

how to change the coilIf you are using a new PnP X coil for the first time, pop a couple of drops of e-liquid directly into the coil through the drip tip, and let e-liquid sit in the tank for five minutes before having a puff on it.

This helps the cotton in the coil fully absorb the e-liquid and cuts down on dry hits, prolonging the lifespan of your coil.

Charging

As with any device that uses removable batteries, it is always advisable to use an external dedicated battery charger and charge up your batteries outside of the device where possible.

That being said, the Drag 5 does support Type C 5V/3A charging, so if you are in a bind you can plug in the included USB Type-C charging cable and give your Drag 5 a charge.

How Does The Voopoo Drag 5 Perform?

Included with the kit is the 0.15ohm and 0.3ohm Voopoo PnP X coils, and I’ll look at the performance of these below-

0.3ohm coil performance

I must say the 0.3ohm PnP X coil has been my preferred option since I got the Voopoo Drag S2 and X2, and it is still my preferred option with the Uforce-X tank.

I prefer to vape restricted direct to lung hits in the 35-40W region and the 0.3ohm PnP X coil is right at home with this. I get an incredibly tasty, warm vape that still kicks out an impressive level of vapour, but not an antisocial amount!

This coil really makes my favourite dessert vapes sing too, delivering all the flavour notes to my palate and pushing some rebuildable atomisers hard in terms of flavour quality. It is an excellent coil!

0.15ohm coil performance

If you really want to crank up the Drag 5, and utilize the power that it is capable of, then you are going to want to use the 0.15ohm coil for this.

At high wattages, you need a coil that can wick high VG e-liquid quickly and keep up, and this is definitely capable of doing just that.

This is where you get seriously big clouds and a really warm, flavoursome vape!

I will say though that the Drag 5 will get pretty hot when running it at high wattage, you’ll feel it in the device and the Uforce-X tank, and the vape will be quite hot to the taste as well. To try and minimize heat, vape in short bursts and keep the airflow open as wide as possible.

Coil Lifespan

Voopoo state that the PnP X coils can withstand up to 100ml worth of e-liquid refills, but this will be variable depending on a number of factors, such the mix ratio of your e-liquids, the level of sweetener in them, the output power and even how long you take a draw for, to name but a few factors!tank on voopoo drag 5 mod

I’ve got a fair bit of experience with the PnP X coils as I have been using these regularly to this day since I first got the Voopoo S2 and X2 kits, and on the whole you are looking at some of the best lifespan on the market from experience.

Mine will average around 10 days to 2 weeks before needing to be replaced!

Battery Life

Again, this is going to be variable depending on the capacity of the batteries that you are using, as well as the resistance of your coil and the selected power output.

For example, I use Molicell 2800mAh 25A batteries in my Drag 5 and with the 0.4ohm coil set to 38W I will get just about a day’s worth of pretty heavy vaping from that.

If I use the 0.15ohm coil and nudge the power up, towards the 100W mark, then I’m looking at a matter of a few hours use rather than a full day!

Airflow

At the top of the Uforce X tank are two huge airflow intakes, and to adjust the airflow you simply rotate the airflow control ring around the airflow.airflow close uforce x

This is buttery smooth and I haven’t had any issues with it accidentally adjusting in my pocket and losing my selected airflow setting.

Having the airflow set to fully open will give you a very airy, unrestricted direct to lung hit and some absolutely huge vapour production, especially when running the 0.15ohm coil and chucking some power through it!

You can close the airflow right down to a mouth to lung hit if that is your preference, but really this tank shines for direct lung hits and restricted direct to lung hits.voopoo drag 5 with uforce x tank

I only have the airflow open around a third with my preferred 0.3ohm coil and I find that is plenty for me, I get a perfect restricted lung hit and plenty of dense vapour.

This is a proper cloud chucker of a tank so be prepared to fill up a room with vapour in no time at all, I’d recommend driving with the window right down if you are using this in your car!

Pros

  • A very powerful kit!
  • Compatible with Voopoo’s existing PnP X range of coils
  • Fantastic looking kit
  • Well-designed battery door cover
  • Lots of different options and settings to adjust
  • Sliding top filling system makes refilling a breeze
  • Excellent flavour from the Uforce-X tank
  • PnP X coils have a long lifespan
  • Huge vapour production!
  • 510 threading on the device allows you to use different tanks
  • Spare glass tank section and silicon seals included with the kit
  • Large, clear screen

Cons

  • It’s a pretty large kit, definitely not a discreet one!
  • Will leak out of the airflow holes if overfilled
  • Glass tank will be prone to shattering if dropped
  • Glass tank section also overhangs the sides of the Drag 5 device on the non-TPD version
  • Uforce-X tank gets through a lot of e-liquid!
  • Gets hot at high wattages

Final Verdict

Now, not only is this one powerful kit, and a very welcome addition to the ever expanding Drag range, this is one great looking vape mod too!

I absolutely love the styling and looks of the Drag 5 device, with this being a genuine stunner and I really do love the sliding C-Frame battery cover.

I will definitely be buying a couple of replacement battery door covers when they are available in the UK and switching up the look of my Drag 5.

Alongside the great looks, I’ve got more power than I ever need from this device. I’m quite happy tooting along on the 0.3ohm coil in the region of 40W but it’s nice to crank it up now and again and really blast out some clouds!

I get great flavour too from the Uforce-X tank alongside massive clouds, and that is mainly in part down to the PnP X range of coils.

I’m glad Voopoo kept running with these and didn’t design another new range of coils for the Uforce-X tank, as the PnP X range is one of my favourite ranges of coils and I have plenty I had already purchased in the past for my Drag S2 kit.

This device has become a daily carry for me and since I received it from Voopoo I have found it hard to put down. It’s certainly helped me blast through some of my shortfill e-liquid backlog that I have built up!

At the time of writing, I can’t see a UK price listed for the Voopoo Drag 5, as it is not currently available for release yet and most vendors just have a placeholder listing for it.

I would expect that you wouldn’t be paying much more than about £50-£60 for this, just going by the RRP for the Drag 4, and you will get a lot of device for your money here.

Voopoo’s popular Drag series grows ever bigger with the addition of the Voopoo Drag S2 and X2, which we have in for review today.

drag s2 and x2 in handEstablished by ICCPP in 2016, Voopoo have grown into a world leading vaping device manufacturer, becoming one of the most recognisable, popular and well-regarded brands in the industry.

At present, Voopoo sell into more than 70 countries and regions around the world, establishing a large presence in the UK, US and the EU amongst others.

Voopoo have a huge range of different devices and systems to choose from, appealing to beginner vapers as well as seasoned, experienced vaping enthusiasts.

Both the Voopoo Drag S2 and X2 join illustrious stable mates such as the Drag H40, Drag Mini as well as the original Drag X and Drag S kits.

Voopoo have been kind enough to send over the S2 and X2 and in this review we will be looking at the Voopoo Drag S2.

What Can We Expect From The Voopoo Drag S2?

Voopoo’s Drag series of kits have proven to be wildly popular, renowned for ease of use and great performance. The S2 promises to build upon the groundwork laid by previous Drag kits- so expect top drawer flavour performance, big clouds and ease of use!

voopoo drag s2 white

The latest version of Voopoo’s patented Gene chipset is present in the Drag S2, called the Gene.TT 2.0.

This offers a Smart Mode option, which will automatically detect the resistance of the coil and select the best power output for it, an RBA option (variable wattage) which will allow you to select whatever power output you wish and an Eco option to streamline battery performance when the battery level drops under 40%.

These options can be selected through a simplified and easy to use menu system.

Safety protections are all built into the device and handled by the Gene.TT 2.0 chipset and the Drag S2 has a built in 2500mAh battery that can output up to 60W of power.

USB Type-C fast charging means you’ll be able to recharge your Drag S2 battery in no time at all!

voopoo drag x2 and s2 boxes

Debuting as part of the Drag S2 kit is Voopoo’s new side-filling PnP X Cartridge tank, with a top airflow design.

The PnP X Cartridge tank features redesigned PnP X coils, which have a mesh coil system with thermo-stable cotton, a 4 layer leak-proof design and these promise to offer real longevity too, with Voopoo promising that these coils can withstand 100ml of e-liquid refills, making them a cost effective and less wasteful option.

Drag S2 and Drag X2 Available

Alongside the Drag S2, the Drag X2 kit is shortly coming to market, which offers much of what the S2 does however the X2 does not have a built-in battery, going for the option of using a removable 18650 battery instead.

The X2 will also offer a bump in maximum output power, able to output up to 80W compared to the maximum 60W output of the S2.

Design and Build Quality

Seven different designs will be available for the Voopoo Drag S2, with Sky Blue, Modern Red, Colourful Silver, Glow Pink, Grey Metal, Spray Black and Pearl White available to choose from.

voopoo drag s2 colours

I was sent the Pearl White version, and I can say that it is a real looker!

Interestingly, a de-bossed vegan leather design can be found on this kit and it gives it a premium feel.

voopoo drag x2 vs drag s2
Drag X2 (Black) vs Drag S2 (White)

It is nice to hold in the hand and doesn’t feel slippery although it does feel a little on the weighty side. That being said, it packs a smaller form factor when compared to its larger sibling, the Drag X2.

voopoo drag s2 reviewMeasurements wise, the Drag S2 sports dimensions of 122mm x 32.8mm x 28.6mm, making it a fairly compact kit. But certainly not the smallest vape mod around!

TFT Screen

A lovely, clear 0.96” TFT colour screen can be found on the Voopoo Drag S2, clearly displaying information such as the current battery level, the selected output mode, output power, resistance of the coil, voltage, a puff counter and a puff timer.

voopoo drag x2 screen on

The screen displays information clearly regardless of the current light condition.

PnP X Tank

Voopoo’s newest PnP atomiser forms part of the Drag S2 kit, with the debut of the PnP X Cartridge DTL tank.

voopoo drag x pnp pod

This is a tank that features an adjustable top airflow design, Polycarbonate glass, a fixed wide-bore conical drip tip (the MTL version of the PnP X Cartridge tank allows for interchangeable drip tips) and a side filling port.

Plug and Play Coils

A plug and play (PnP) coil system is located at the base of the tank and the coils pleasingly sit flush with the bottom of the tank when inserted.

No traditional 510 connector is found on the Drag S2, it uses Voopoo’s PnP technology meaning that a magnetic connector is present to facilitate contact between the mod and the tank.

The tank snaps into place satisfyingly and is easy to remove- no twisting and turning needed here, just pop the tank on and off.

drag s2 in white

This technology does however mean that you are limited to using PnP X Cartridge tanks, you won’t be able to use previous PnP tanks or tanks from other manufacturers.

Build quality overall feels very good indeed, buttons are easy to access and operate with one hand. There’s no button rattle present – they feel clicky and are responsive, and the lovely finish present on the mod itself has been resistant to scratches so far!

Quick Start Guide

Before beginning to use the Voopoo Drag S2, you’ll want to fill up the PnP Cartridge X DTL tank with e-liquid, and charge the device and I’ll cover how to do this in the respective sections down below.

drag s2 oled screen

To turn on the mod, you need to press the fire button five times in quick succession. Be warned however, you need to press it five times very quickly! The same goes for turning the device off. You can also lock it when not using it, by holding down the power and up buttons.

Accessing the menu is done by holding both the up and down buttons. Within the menu screen you will find:

  • ‘mode’, which allows you to choose between Smart, RBA and Eco modes
  • ‘puff reset’ which will reset the puff counter
  • ‘about device’ which displays the chip ID and level code
  • ‘exit’ which will bring you back out of the menu screen.

Smart Mode

Smart mode will allow the Gene.TT 2.0 chip to automatically select the power output based on the resistance of the coil, however you can still adjust the power output in smart mode if the recommended setting is not to your liking.

smart-mode-voopoo-drag-s2

If you try to exceed the maximum recommended power output (for example, trying to set the power output above 40W when using the 0.3ohm coil) it will bring up a “max power” warning on screen and you won’t be able to go beyond the maximum recommended power level.

Smart mode is pretty accurate, and I tend to just leave the device set to this!

RBA Mode

RBA mode allows you full control over the power output of the device, so you can set the power output to whatever you desire.

Eco Mode

Eco mode comes in handy when the battery level drops below 40%, as it will eke out a bit more battery life from the device.

Operation

When you are ready to vape, simply hold down the power button and inhale. The coil heats up virtually instantaneously, with no discernible lag when pressing the power button.

Safety protections are built into the device and are handled by the Gene.TT 2.0 chipset.

Safety protections present are overtime protection, output over-current protection, low battery protection, over temperature protection, overcharge protection and short-circuit protection.

The device software is upgradeable and you can do this by plugging the USB-Type C cable into the device and into your computer and visiting Voopoo’s website.

How To Fill The PnP X Cartridge DTL Tank

Filling the PnP X Cartridge DTL tank is made easy with the side filling design.

  • Remove the tank from the mod
  • Locate the silicone filling port cover towards the base of the tank
  • Pull this back then fill through the now-exposed filling port, making sure not to overfill the tank which will result in juice leaking out.

drag s2 and pnp cartridgeThe filling port itself is generously sized, allowing you to slot in your e-liquid bottle nozzle easily. Once done, just pop the filling port cover back over the filling port.

Changing The PnP X Coils

Changing coils is very easy too, thanks to Voopoo’s PnP design.

  • You just pull out the old coil from the base of the tank
  • Slot in a new one.

If you are using a new coil for the first time, it is a good idea to allow the tank to stand for five minutes after filling, to allow e-liquid to fully soak into the coil.

This helps avoid any nasty dry, burnt hits and improves coil longevity.

How Does The Voopoo Drag S2 Perform?

0.3ohm coil Performance

The 0.3ohm coil comes with a recommended power output setting of 32-40W and Voopoo state that it is for both MTL and DTL vaping.drag pnpx 0-3ohm

That being said, I didn’t think it was all that suitable for a MTL vape with the airflow closed down and MTL vapers would be better off investing in the 0.6ohm PnP X coil which is available separately.

However this coil really shines with restricted DTL vaping. I’ve mainly been using this coil in the 37-40W range, with the airflow set at around 1/3 open and the flavour is outstanding. Vapour production is still pretty sizeable too!

0.2ohm coil Performance

If you want a warmer vape, a less restricted DTL hit and better cloud production, then the 0.2ohm coil will be for you! This one is recommended for higher VG e-liquids and for use in the 40-60W range.drag-pnp-x-0-2ohm-coil

The same great flavour found on the 0.3ohm coil is present here, albeit slightly warmer and this kicks out some seriously decent dense clouds with the airflow open!

Lifespan of the coils has been fantastic, I’ve been using these interchangeably with the Voopoo Drag X2 over the past couple of weeks and I still haven’t got through either coil yet.

This is a big plus point, as it means less money spent on replacement coils and less wastage. They’ve both handled 70% VG /30% PG juice perfectly, as well as 60/40 and 50/50 mix ratios.

Alongside the 0.2ohm and 0.3ohm coils, you’ll also be able to get your hands on 0.15ohm and 0.6ohm coils.voopoo pnp x coils

We’ve yet to try any of the other PnP X coils, as they are due to launch alongside the Drag S2 and X2. These will only be compatible with tanks in the PnP X ecosystem.

A MTL (Mouth to Lung) kit will also be available, but the MTL option will only be available in Italy, Germany and France.

Airflow

A top airflow design is used on the PnP X Cartridge DTL and adjusting this is as easy as rotating the top of the tank. The airflow control is smooth and once you have set your airflow preference it will stay in place until you next rotate it.

voopoo drag s2 in hand

The airflow intakes are quite large and when the airflow is fully open you get a loose DTL hit with plenty of vapour production! Setting it to half open will give a restricted DTL hit and you can even get a mouth to lung hit by closing the airflow right down until it is barely open.

Clouds are the order of the day here, as this tank really kicks out the vapour at higher wattage settings. You’ll still get big, dense clouds of fog even with the airflow closed down too.

My own preference has been to set the airflow at about 1/3 open, this still gives me a restricted DTL hit with excellent flavour and it still chucks out the clouds too. Vapour production is so good, I’ve even been banned from using it in the car with the other half!

Charging

On the front of the device, just below the power adjustment buttons, is a USB Type-C port. You get a USB Type-C charging cable included in the kit. Just simply plug the cable into the port and find yourself a suitable power source.

The charge level will be displayed clearly on screen whilst the Drag S2 is charging up, showing you a precise battery charge percentage.

5V/2A charging is supported, meaning that the Drag S2 charges up very quickly, you really don’t have to hang around long waiting for it to charge!

Overcharging protection is built in and it will cut off charging once the battery has reached 100%.

Pros

  • PnP X Cartridge is a real step up from previous PnP tanks
  • Charges very quickly
  • Smart mode is pretty spot on with power output selection
  • Excellent airflow
  • Fantastic looks
  • PnP system makes coil changes easy
  • Pretty simple to use
  • Long lasting coils

Cons

  • Need to be very quick with pressing the power button five times to turn it on and off
  • PnP X Cartridge DTL is not backwards compatible with previous PnP coils
  • MTL tank option will only be available in Italy, Germany and France
  • Can only adjust power settings in 1w increments
  • Tied in to using Voopoo’s PnP X ecosystem, can’t use mods or tanks from other
    manufacturers

Final verdict

I’m really impressed with the Voopoo Drag S2 kit, it has performed pretty faultlessly over the couple of weeks that I have been testing it out.

This kit will be a great choice for someone looking to step up from pod style devices and beginner kits plus I feel that it will also appeal to seasoned vapers who might be looking for a new daily driver or a handy backup to their main device.

The speed that it charges the battery is a real bonus too!

The PnP X Cartridge DTL is a big improvement on Voopoo’s previous PnP Pod tanks, with the improvements in flavour and vapour driven by the excellent PnP X coils and the new top airflow design.

I have had no leakage from the tank either and only a minuscule amount of condensation collection around the connector.

Prior to getting my hands on this, I had been using the Voopoo Drag H40 kit and I can safely say that there is a night and day difference in performance. The flavour in particular is a huge improvement and I can pick up flavour notes in some of my all day vapes that I didn’t even realise were there before!

For now, this will be my kit of choice for carrying around with me, based on how good the performance of this device is. Great job Voopoo!

This will be available in the UK at a price point of around £34.99 depending on which retailer you go to, which I feel represents fantastic value for money for a kit that performs so well.

If you like the sound of the Voopoo Drag S2, but you don’t feel that the maximum output power of 60W will do it for you, then it is well worth having a look at the Voopoo Drag X2. This offers virtually the same specs and performance, with the same excellent PnP X Cartridge DTL tank, and the scope to go up to 80W.

What are your thoughts on the Voopoo Drag S2, will you be racing to get one of these at launch? Drop your comments below!

It’s been a hot minute since I last reviewed a sub ohm set up but here we are today, paying closer inspection to the new Vaporesso Armour MAX box kit.

..And it’s a beast!

Vaporesso Armour MAX hand check imageMaybe it’s just the devices that have been coming my way but it does seem like Vaporesso have been concentrating their attentions more towards the pod kit side of the industry for quite a while.

The LUXE and its variants for example. Or the XROS range of pod kits. Don’t get me wrong – the more the merrier and anything to combat a tidal wave of disposable vapes.

Less waste and more chance of E-liquid manufacturers getting their wares off the shelves.

But it does seem MTL (Mouth To Lung) products have been getting the monopoly of late.

There’s still a healthy contingent of DTL (Direct To Lung) vapers and it may feel like an eternity since anything new has come their way. (We tell you what MTL and DTL mean in our Guide To Vape Styles).

The Vaporesso Armour MAX box kit is here to come to the rescue. And it’s a monster of a kit.

What Can We Expect From the Vaporesso Armour MAX Box Kit?

The Vaporesso Armour Max is armoured to the teeth and a veritable box Mod of tricks both inside and out.

features iconsFor a start it’s comprised entirely of TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane), used in a wide range of demanding applications where durability, flexibility and tensile strength are required characteristics.

It’s been designed to stand the test of time, capable of withstanding daily wear and tear.

There’s support for both 21700 and 18650 batteries. This does mean the former is likely to last longer but either option has been catered for.

Duo battery compatibilityA proprietary Uni-lock feature not only serves to instantly lock or unlock the device but doubles up as a fire button! Hey that’s new!

.. Well, it is to me, anyway.

Unlock featureCOREX tech once again makes a return to deliver an impressive power boost. To ensure quick and efficient heating of the GTi mesh coils for a consistent and intense flavour experience.

You can find out more about COREX tech in our How COREX Tech is Improving Flavour article elsewhere on the site.

Corex morph mesh tech

Speaking of flavour intensity, the Armour MAX has been designed exclusively for Direct To Lung (DTL) vapers. It also supplies all the power needed for thick, dense vapour production.

A 0.96in TFT colour screen displays all the essential vaping data required both clearly and intuitively. Customise your vaping experience in the way that suits you.

Use the fire and menu rocker button to make these customisations and choose from Eco, Pulse and F(t) mode. There’s even the option to tinker with temperature control mode if that’s your bag.

Again, we’ve covered these modes elsewhere on the site. Check out the Vaporesso Target 200 Kit for more details.

iTank 2 specs list
It’s all a bit odd, really.

From drip tip to base I measured the tank as being 55mm in height and the diameter much nearer to 25mm – but there ya go. Who am I to argue? lol

The 30mm diameter must refer to the actual Bubble glass size – not the tank base.

Vaporesso Armour Max – Design and Build Quality

It’s all about a rugged durability with the Armour MAX box mod. It’s the first thing that strikes me. This is clearly designed for the outdoor vaper and those working in active roles.

Durable build qualityFor those who have very little time on their hands as demonstrated by the slide mechanics employed.

The TPU material feels like a cross between plastic and rubber with the majority of the Mod covered with it. It works particularly well in providing both comfort and grip when held.

It also grips any surface it’s placed on for further reassurance.

So on the top we have a gold plated spring loaded 510 contact. If you’re planning on using your own tank I’d suggest looking at those with a diameter of 26mm or less to prevent any overhang.

510 spring loaded pinThe rear of the Mod is home to an elongated Vaporesso badge, incorporated into the TPU.

Battery Door

Directly below this is the slide mechanic for the battery door.

badge and battery door sliderPush down on this and the door instantly springs open. We’re talking strong springs!

The batteries only fit one way and their polarity is indicated on the inside of the hinged door.

Hinged battery doorI checked for battery rattle using two 18650’s with the adaptor sleeves. None. Nada. So all good.

..Just remember to remove the two sleeves if you’re planning on using 21700 batteries. You’ll look a bit silly if you don’t! 😉

Display

I love the screen display! It’s set out a little bit differently on the Armour MAX.

Mode, puff counter (vape duration when using), coil resistance and independent battery health meters are all shoe horned onto the left hand side of the display while wattage output takes up all of the right side.

The colour TFT screen means that all information can be clearly read and you’re never in doubt as to how hard you’re hitting the device.

Display on the Vaporesso Armour MAXScrolling speed for wattage output is extremely fast. Pressing left or right on the rocker button alters it in single watt measures but holding the button truly accelerates things.

The Mod doesn’t ‘Round Robin’ or reset once maximum output is hit but that’s never really been an issue for me, anyway.

Uni-lock

This shows real innovation in my opinion. Not sure if it’s been done before but it’s new to me!

The fire button doubles up as a locking mechanism. And again, it’s all down to a simple slider. Slide the button down to use as the fire button and slide up to force lock the device.

How easy is that!

Unlock slider on Vaporesso Armour MAXMy only quibble is in how easy it is to make the adjustment. The slider does move rather freely.

Finally, below the rocker button there’s a type C USB charging port. Now I know the Mod isn’t IP67 rated but it would’ve been nice were it not so exposed.

Yes it’s recessed but given the overall build quality of the Mod does look prone to dust, dirt or potential damage.

It’s the only thing that looks fragile about the device.

rocker button and type C Usb portTo be honest I always use a dedicated charging unit with external batteries anyway.

It’s just something to pay closer attention to if this is your method of recharging.

Vaporesso iTank 2 – Design and Build Quality

Our Shell made a detailed analysis of the iTank 2 when she coupled it with another Vaporesso Mod. Check out her detailed review of the Vaporesso Gen 80S iTank 2 for the full low down.

I’ll just go over the basics here.

You get a removable 810 drip tip with the iTank 2. Not the prettiest one in the world so you might want to swap it for one that suits your chosen colour scheme asap.

To gain access to the fill port it’s a simple case of pressing down on the red marker just below the top cap. There’s also an arrow to mark the exact position.

I like the attention to detail! Nice work, Vaporesso.

How to open the top cap on the iTank 2
Push down on the red mark just below the arrow on the top cap and watch it spring into life!

Word of warning! The spring mechanism is very strong and the top cap swings a full 180 degrees when opened.

This does give you ample clearance to insert any bottle nozzle of choice into the generously sized fill port opening. Something I very much appreciated.

Spring loaded top cap on Vaporesso iTank 2There is knurling under the top cap but this is for cosmetic purposes more than anything else.

Airflow

The dual airflow slots themselves are mahoosive!

Fully open they measure around half an inch, so if sauna like vapour production is your fetish it looks like the iTank 2 has you covered.

Adjustable airflow slot on iTank 2This adjustability does come at the price of a stopper. Don’t try to force it too much or the deck may start unscrewing from the base. A common issue with tanks employing a stopper system.

Tank Base

Unscrewing the tank is made easy with additional, bolder knurling patterns and the threading is butter smooth. No squeaky mice here!

Gold plated contacts inside the tank ensure optimal conductivity and power between the Mod and GTi coil.

Inside the deck of the iTank 2The Vaporesso Armour MAX comes with the 8ml glass and 0.2ohm GTi mesh coil pre-installed. What if you prefer the included 2ml glass? How do you replace a coil once it starts tasting funky?

Let’s delve into that right now.

Quick Start Guide

How To Install or Change the Coil

  • Unscrew the tank from the Mod (anti-clockwise)
  • Unscrew the base of the tank (clockwise)
  • Unscrewing the deck itank 2Using a finger nail (if you’ve got one!) gently pull the existing coil out of the tank chamber
  • Push the new coil up into the tank chamber ensuring a firm seal

Replacing the coil on the iTank 2
The Red O-ring should not be visible once pushed firmly into place
  • Screw the base back onto the tank (anti-clockwise)

How To Replace the Glass Tank

  • Unscrew the base from the tank
  • Carefully pull down on the glass tube to slide it out. Use the knurling on the top cap for additional grip
  • Removing the glass on the iTank 2Carefully push the replacement glass tube up and over both silicone O-rings. You can use a small amount of e-liquid to lubricate the O-rings when replacing the glass.
  • Replacing the glass on the iTank 2Screw the base back onto the tank

If it helps, use a gentle ‘twist – turn’ motion when removing or replacing glass tubes.

Try to keep the glass as straight as possible when replacing or removing.

Make sure the glass tube is firmly seated before screwing the base back into place.

How To Fill the Vaporesso iTank 2

  • Press the Red marker to swing the top cap open
  • Locate the silicone fill port and push a bottle nozzle down into the fill chamber

Locating fill port on the iTank 2

  • Gently squeeze E-liquid into the tank making sure not to overfill.
  • Manually swing the top cap back until it clicks into place

If this is the first time you’re filling the tank, let the E-liquid soak into the cotton wicks for around 3-5 minutes prior to vaping.

How To Operate the Armour MAX

The device will spring into life as soon as two batteries are inserted.

  • 5 clicks of the fire button to switch the device on or off
  • Use the menu rocker button to adjust power to suitable levels depending on the coil installed
  • Use the fire button to vape
  • To lock the device simply push the fire button up. Slide it down to unlock
  • The device can also be locked by holding the up and down menu rocker buttons together. Press them both again to unlock
  • Press the fire button 3 times to enter the mode select screen. Use the menu rocker to highlight selected mode and press the fire button to activate.
  • Press and hold the fire and left menu rocker to activate Smart Mode

F(t) Mode (Default)

Is a method of automatically adjusting the output temperature and heating speed versus time to deliver better flavour. This is made possible by a series of differing voltages applied in quick succession during each vape.

gen 80s f t mode

Pulse Mode

Pulse mode is where the device pulses the voltage output every 0.02 seconds to improve the efficiency of the vape and keep a more stable output.

gen nano pulse mode

Eco Mode

This is basically a standard variable wattage mode where you can adjust the power to suit your own particular needs.

gen nano eco mode

Temperature Control Mode

Using the main mode select screen, pick from Stainless Steel, Nichrome or Titanium coil material then hit the fire button to activate.

Press the menu rocker to make appropriate changes to the power output.

Press the Up menu rocker button and fire together to adjust wattage while in TC mode.

Hold the down menu rocker button and fire to lock or unlock TC resistances.

Smart Mode

This feature is ideal for the newer sub ohm vaper as it automatically detects the best power setting for the coil. Using this prevents any dry burns and potential damage the coil.

Settings Mode

Turn Smart mode on or off, lock temperature control, reset puff counter, adjust colour theme and brightness or return to default settings.

Smart mode automatically detects the best power for the installed coil.

Armour S Mod

The Vaporesso Armour S mod is the smaller sister device to the Armour Max I am reviewing.

Don’t worry if you only have one battery. The Armour S Mod has you covered by using either a single 21700 or 18650.

It’s basically the same device only reduced in width. Capable of a maximum output of 100W it still comes complete with the same GTi coils of its bigger brother, the MAX.

The info I have states the iTank 2 comes with a 5ml glass but for UK audiences it’s going to be restricted to 2ml, obviously.

You get all the modes of the Armour MAX although the 0.96in TFT colour screen layout has been altered to reflect its single battery capabilities.

How Does the Vaporesso Armour MAX Perform?

I tested the pre-installed 0.2ohm GTi mesh coil in the default F(t) mode first. It’s the mode the device fires up in once two 18650 batteries are installed.

Output parameters for the coil are between 60-75W so I opted for 70W as a good representation of what to expect.

Doozy Temptations Jam Tart was the E-liquid flavour of choice. It’s a 70VG/30PG ratio, highly suited for this powerful sub ohm mesh coil.

F(t) mode Armour Max box ModLet me start by saying power to the coil is instant, and I mean instant.

With the dual airflow ring wide open the vape is mildly warm. I was expecting slightly more heat but flavour is off the charts!

Strawberry Jam literally spills from the exhale with most of the pastry notes being sucked up during inhale and released underneath a sweet fruit on the way out.

Highly pleasant. Can you tell I love dessert vapes?

The way flavour is distributed across the vape is also incredible. Consistency is key to performance when it comes to F(t) mode and this can be put down to auto adjustment of temperature and heating speed of the inhale.

All the time the fire button is being depressed it never feels as though anything is being lost. A level playing field at all time and it really does show.

Extended vapes of 5-6 seconds proved the point.

Airflow

I was so impressed with a wide open airflow that it actually took a while for me to make any adjustments! The power setting also seemed to be exactly what I wanted too.

On this setting I still think there was about a 10% restriction but that may be due to dual airflow as opposed to three adjustable airflow slots.

This minor restriction increases to around 40% when cutting airflow in half. It has a dramatic effect on the sweetness of the vape. The flavour is also more concentrated on this setting.

I could easily pass this off as a semi restrictive lung vape. It feels comfortable enough with just a tickle created on the back of the throat.

Nicey!

Warmth increases too and most noticeable on the inhale. To be quite honest, I did feel flavour was starting to become too ‘compacted’ for my liking. Not as enjoyable with slow, drawn out exhales but again the consistency was excellent.

Further airflow adjustments weren’t to my liking at all. The restriction became too uncomfortable and even with 3mg freebase included in the E-liquid, I began a series of coughing fits!

It becomes a RDL (Restrictive Direct Lung) vape and not what the coil is designed for at all, in my opinion. You’ll definitely want to reduce power down to at least 60W if this is your preferred setting.

Vapour Production

Clearly if you want to be chuckin’ dem clouds, opt for unrestricted airflow.

You can inhale comfortably for as long as you desire and receive a pleasant throat hit with masses of thick white vapour tumbling across the room on the way out.

A highly pleasant experience after reviewing so many disposable vapes!

.. I’m in dessert vape heaven!

Pulse Mode

Quite tricky to describe.

Where F(t) mode would be flavour on steroids, Pulse mode seems to opt for a more subdued response in terms of power.

Pulse mode Armour MAX box modNot that it’s in a bad way. Far from it. It’s a bit like taking the foot off the accelerator a bit.

There’s just a little less clout behind it but flavour properties are still up there.

It’s a stable vape, that’s for sure no doubt due to the way voltage is supplied to the coil.

So maybe a few of the flavour characteristics aren’t quite as bright or well defined but other than that, I really couldn’t notice much difference between this and F(t) mode.

In summary, if you want less of a feisty vape experience go for this mode.

You’re still getting the works.

0.4ohm GTi Mesh Coil (Rated 50-60W)

I tested this in ECO mode and switched Smart mode on. The 70W setting of the 0.2ohm coil instantly changed to 55W and this is what I went for when vaping.

Vaporesso Armour MAX in ECO modeAirflow was wide open and gave me the same experience as the 0.2ohm coil. In that there was minimal restriction.

Using Naughty Juice Vanilla Custard was a pleasant experience. Another 70VG/30PG E-liquid ratio, the tank was banging out the flavour.

The Vanilla was more prominent than the custard but the taste was clean and well defined at all times. Consistently good.

Yes, I could’ve done with a little more warmth and pushing the power another 5W obviously wasn’t going to improve that much.

Further Airflow Restrictions

In terms of this, the 0.4ohm coil behaves very much like its lower resistance alternative.

I feel the restrictions are about the same, regardless of airflow setting. I can’t say I noticed much difference in flavour quality either. Still impressive but not really intensified.

Again, I wouldn’t suggest reducing airflow to anything beyond two thirds closed. That’s not the way to vape these mesh coils. This is a sub ohm set up where the coils crave too much power for a restrictive lung hit.

I found half open – half closed to be the best restriction for me, personally.

Vapour Production

Superb!

It won’t take long for a room to fill with vapour so opening a few windows may well be advised when using the Vaporesso Armour MAX kit!

Pros

  • Solid, durable design that’s also aesthetically pleasing
  • Locking a device has never been easier with the Uni-lock / fire button
  • Power and ramp up time is up there with the best. It’s instant!
  • Quality screen layout. Easy to view all relevant info and settings
  • Easy to navigate menu options
  • F(t) mode is amazing. Flavour quality and consistency has never been this good!
  • Quick release battery door. Replace those batteries in seconds
  • Option of using wider tank sizes with the Armour MAX Mod.

Cons

  • Can be a juice guzzler but that’s subjective to power output, really
  • Lack of protection around the USB charging port
  • The Uni-lock slider feels a bit loose. Accidentally armed on a few occasions

Final Review Verdict

You’ll notice no review on temperature control.

Unfortunately it’s something I never used so can’t provide info on that but the other modes more than make up for this in my opinion anyway.

If you need a representation of how powerful the Armour MAX can be, check out its juice guzzling capabilities.

I got 86 puffs from the 2ml iTank 2. Says it all doesn’t it. But here’s the rub.

In terms of battery performance using two 18650’s. I don’t have the newest pair in the world and it’s always going to be subjective to power settings.

I got around 4 hours use from 60W output. The 2ml tank was refilled on numerous occasions and 262 puffs were registered on the LCD screen.

Each and every single vape was as flavoursome as the last. When airflow was wide open I really did feel the tank and Mod were working in an extremely balanced and uniform manner.

Delivering the goods consistently at all times. Performance wise, I simply couldn’t ask more from the set up.

I’d definitely recommended using the higher power settings for either GTi coil. With as much airflow as you can handle. That’s what they’re designed for.

Sometimes this can result in a more diluted flavour with some devices admittedly but that’s simply not the case with the Armour MAX and iTank 2.

A word of warning though!

Don’t let those E-liquid levels fall too low. I did and it resulted in a dry hit that wouldn’t budge even after re-filling the tank. Another indication of the power of this set up.

I recommend 70VG/30PG E-liquid ratios for the 0.4ohm coil and 80/20PG for the 0.2ohm alternative.

Neither coil will push the Armour MAX to its full potential but that’s the beauty of box Mods. You can always run RDA’s (Rebuildable Dripping Atomizers) with super low resistance DIY coils if that’s your thang.

Durability, consistency, reliability, accessibility and versatility. Big words for a Mod delivering big results. That’s the Vaporesso Armour MAX.

In a break from pod kits I have got a proper box mod and sub ohm tank set up – the Vaporesso Gen 80S and iTank 2 – in for review.

vaporesso gen 80s main image

Of course Vaporesso need no introduction for many vapers and their Gen range has a lot of fans. Previous models include the original Gen mod, Gen Nano, Gen X, Gen S, Gen 200 plus the Gen Fit starter kit and the Gen Air 40 and Gent PT80S pod kits.

gen 80s banner

I have not reviewed many Vaporesso kits and the ones I have are oldies – the Pod Stick, Revenger Mini and Switcher. So it will be great to get re-acquainted with the brand!

Thank you to Vape Club for sending the kit over for review, I will report back honestly on my findings of the device in my possession.

What To Expect From The Vaporesso Gen 80S iTank 2…

This is your standard Box Mod and Sub Ohm Tank kit. Some of the images below show the Gen 200 as they were released together, but have all the same components – apart from the 80S is a single battery versus the 200 dual battery.

gen 80s components

When the original Gen 80S / Gen 200 were released, they included the first version of the iTank. Both kits have been updated to include the iTank 2 – which is what I will be reviewing.

Let’s look at the mod first…

The brain of the mod is the Axon chip, which has proved popular on many other Vaporesso mods.

gen 80s axon chip

The design of the mod is based on the coating of the Gen S to give more comfort and grip

gen 80s materials

Output wise this is specified as 5-80W with multiple user modes which we will discuss later.

You will need a single 18650 battery which is not included to provide the power. There is a USB Type C port with a 2A charge rate for emergency charging.

All of your vaping data is displayed on the 0.96in TFT screen.

The 510 connection on top of the mod has been upgraded, there were some complaints about previous Gen mods that the 510 plate would come loose.

gen 80s upgraded 510

For the iTank 2 a new range of coils have been introduced – the GTi platform.

itank 2 features

These have been updated to include the Corex Heating Tech which you can read more about here – “How Corex Tech Is Improving Flavour“.

gen 80s corex

Many recent kits have had the Corex tech which includes the Morph Mesh coil structure to give longer coil life and increased flavour.

MORPH-MESH

Plus the cotton wicking material has been upgraded to a microfibre structure which promises a greater surface area and better wicking.

The GTI range so far has 4 coil options…

  • 0.15ohm Mesh (available separately)
  • 0.2ohm Mesh (included in kit)
  • 0.4ohm Mesh (included in kit)
  • 0.5ohm Mesh (coming soon)

itank 2 coils

There are 2 capacity options for the iTank 2 – 8ml (standard) and 2ml for TPD regulated areas.

A press and slide top fill cap means filling is a breeze plus the tank base has an airflow control ring to adjust the air restriction to your preference.

itank 2 top fill

There are 7 colours to choose from: Black, Blue, Silver, Brown, Neon Orange, Sky Blue and Neon Purple.

Vaporesso Gen 80S iTank 2 Design and Build Quality

I received the Sky Blue version with the 2ml tank capacity.

The instructions are decent, but slightly confusing as this does have so many modes and adjustments. There is a lot of information to take in and the User Interface is not as intuitive as other mods I have used.

gen 80s instructions

I have tried to explain them simply in the Quick Start Guide section further in this review.

You can view the instruction manual online here, which I often do as you can zoom in to see smaller text easier!

I will say the USB cable is a bit poor – look how long it is… 19cm to be exact from the tip of each connector!

gen 80s usb cable

Vaporesso Gen 80S Mod

Looking first at the mod and it really is beautiful!

The body is a gradient of Blue in a matte metallic finish.

gen 80s side view

The front and sides of the mod are the main metal frame and the rear is a textured removable battery cover.

You will find the one side has the “Vaporesso” text etched in and the only other branding is on the mod base!

gen 80s vaporesso branding

One side of the mod houses the workface…

Workface

This has the same finish as the rest of the mod apart from there is a Black plastic panel.

gen 80s workface

Above the panel is the circular 10mm diameter metal fire button. This has a record groove style texture and is super responsive.

Below the fire button is the Black plastic panel.

This houses the beautiful colour screen which is bright and clear to read. The actual display and theme colour will vary according to the user mode. I will discuss the screen in the “Quick Start Guide” section later on.

Underneath the screen are 3 small buttons, these are laid out vertically. The top button is the up or “+” button. The middle button is the mode button and the bottom button is the down or “-” button.

gen 80s buttons

These are all very responsive but are very small without much of a gap between. So those of you with a chunkier finger might be pressing multiple buttons at once!

Finally the USB Type C port sits on the bottom of the workface. This connects perfectly with no issues. Also that means that you can charge the mod with it upright, which means less chance of leaks from the tank airflow if it were lying down.

Mod Base

There are 2 visible Black screw heads and they are surrounded by some engraving.

gen 80 s base view

You will find the “Gen 80S” logo followed by the required legal logos and “Made in China”.

It stands up well on its base without the tank installed but installing the tank does make it slightly unstable as the tank is quite tall and heavy.

Battery Cover

As mentioned above this has a textured finish which according to Vaporesso has 3 coatings – including breathable Rubber, Metal Spray and Polycarbonate.

gen 80s battery cover removal

It does have a “Dimpled” texture which is nice to grip but not spongy Rubber as I was expecting.

This has the same metallic paint finish as the mod and is a “C” shape in profile.

gen 80s remove battery cover

It is secured by 2 magnets which match with corresponding magnets in the battery compartment.

gen 80s battery cover interior

A small cut-out on the side of the mod allows you to use a finger nail to prise the battery cover off. It is held on very firmly!

gen 80s battery cover cutout

At the rear of the cover is an ingrained “V” for Vaporesso symbol.

gen 80s battery cover external

I really prefer this style of battery access, as often the battery door on some mods can wear over time and become loose or not even shut correctly. Whereas this “C” frame design seems to stay functional.

Battery Compartment

This is made from Black plastic with the magnets at the top and bottom to secure the battery cover.

gen 80s battery installed

The bottom positive connector is spring loaded and does protrude a lot. Therefore when installing and removing the battery make sure to push against the positive connector to get the battery to fit easier.

gen 80s battery compartment

There are clear markings for the positive (+) and negative (-) poles but it is only etched into the Black plastic. I would like to see these made more prominent by the addition of colour.

Above the battery connectors is the “Axon Chip” logo – this denotes that the Vaporesso Axon Chipset is installed in the device.

510 Connector

Vaporesso have upgraded this connector as there were many reports of it becoming loose on earlier Gen models, which can render the device useless.

In fact when Neash reviewed the original Gen Mod in 2019 the 510 connector was already wobbling after only a week of use.

gen 80s v gen 510
Left = Gen Mod, Right = Gen 80S

For that reason I was very pleased to see that the 510 connection has been reinforced with the addition of 3 screws to keep it super secure.

The threading is perfectly smooth and the centre pin is spring loaded to make sure the best contact is maintained with the tank at all times.

I would say 25mm is the largest diameter tank you could use on here without overhang. However the width is officially 25.5mm but there is a slight chamfer on the edge of the mod.gen 80s top view

Saying this, the included iTank 2 has roughly a 26mm diameter and does look great but there is a slight overhang.

Vaporesso iTank 2

This is a pretty basic looking sub ohm tank with some nice features.

It comprises of left to right (in the image below) – the removable drip tip, top cap, chimney section, inner glass (more about this later), tank glass, removable coil and tank bottom cap.

itank 2 components

The metal body of my tank is in Silver – which I assume is Stainless Steel.

itank 2 side view

It has a standard 810 drip tip – the one with the O-rings on the drip tip. There are no O-rings inside the tank cap – so the “Goon” style 810 tips (no O-rings) will not be suitable. However I have plenty of 810 tips so I tried another on here and it fitted perfectly. Always useful in case you break or loose the drip tip. I don’t really think it will fall out though!

itank 2 drip tip

The top cap has some “Vaporesso” engraving on the top face and some chunks cut-out for grip.

itank 2 top view

To access the fill port there is a button on the top cap of the tank. This has an etched in arrow above it and a Red “-” mark on the button itself. Simply press this and the tank top will swing open.

itank 2 push button

The spring open action does mean there is a slight resistance when closing the tank top. You do have to push it and wait for it to fully click into the closed position.

The fill port is a kind of “smiley” shape which is around 10mm in total length and 3mm in width. It is topped with a gasket which you must push the e-liquid nozzle through in order to fill the tank. This gasket helps prevent e-liquid leaking back out of the fill port. You also get a spare gasket in the kit which is great.

itank 2 fill port

I had no issues with the port at all and as you can see I was using a large Gorilla 120ml bottle!

itank 2 filling

The Chimney section has the iTank logo engraved on and what looks like a drip symbol.

itank 2 chimney

I think the engraving looks classy and doesn’t look Garish.

Finally the bottom cap provides the airflow adjustment. The rotating airflow control ring opens / closes off 2 large slot airflow intakes. This has just enough resistance so that it will not adjust by itself yet is still easy to turn thanks to the cut out grip areas.

itank 2 airflow slots
Airflow adjustment – Left = fully closed, Right = fully open

With the bottom cap removed you can access the coil. In the inside of the cap is the coil contact area which has a raised platform as the tank apparently recycles any condensation for re-atomisation.

itank 2 base removed

On the bottom of the tank there is lots of engraving – here you will see “Design by Vaporesso”, “iTank 2”, Serial Number and the required legal logos.

itank 2 base

The 510 connector has smooth threads and the centre pin protrudes around 1mm and there is a good gap between the thread and 510 pin which should keep them isolated.

Replace the Tank Glass / Capacity Reducer?!?

There seemed to be a bit of e-liquid on the outside of the tank after I filled it.

itank 2 int tank level

Upon close examination there looked to be a crack in the glass. No worries – there was a spare glass in the kit so I started to dismantle the tank to replace the glass.

itank 2 spare glass

To do this you remove the base of the tank by unscrewing.

You will need a small blade to separate the glass from the strong O-ring that secures it to the top cap.

itank 2 glass removal

The glass will then slide off the base of the tank.

itank 2 tank glass slide

What happened next really surprised me.

There was another internal glass!!

itank 2 inner tank glass

This inner glass had a seam, which when I run my thumb over it actually came apart! This was not glass but some kind of plastic and it was a 2 part construction!

itank 2 inner tank glass removed

I am thinking this internal tube reduced the capacity to 2ml! Confined the e-liquid into a smaller area?

itank 2 double glass

When I had been filling the tank previously, it didn’t seem to be full – yet it was coming back out of the fill port! What had been happening is some of the e-liquid escaped from the inner tube to the outer tube and made it only look half full!

I was picking my brains as to whether this inner 2 piece tube section was vital to tank operation? It wasn’t used for sealing the outer glass and the coil was secured in the base – so I removed it.itank 2 single glass

Guess what – upon assembling – no leaks – in fact this was better than before I removed the inner tube assembly! So I think I have increased the tank capacity?

I used a syringe to check this out and yes I was right – the tank was now 3ml in capacity!

Quick Start Guide

The kit arrives with the tank separate from the mod. The 0.2ohm coil is already installed.

You will need to fill the tank and install the battery – which I will cover later in this section!

Basic Operation

  • Power On/Off = press the fire button 5 times.
  • Vaping = hold the fire button to vape
  • Adjust output = use the + and – buttons.
  • Battery indicator = the battery icon on the screen displays the amount of charge remaining.
  • Battery indicator when charging = the battery indicator and charging time will be displayed on the screen. However it is recommended that you use an external charger.
  • Airflow = rotate the airflow control ring at the base of the tank.
  • Change user modes = press the Mode button and hold until the mode icon at the bottom of the screen flashes. Scroll using the + and – buttons and when the required mode is shown leave the mod alone and it will return to the home screen.

Screen

The screen shows a lot of information – which I will explain…

gen 80s screen details

  • First at the top is the power level selected in Watts.
  • The “S” or “V” symbol denotes whether “Smart” or “Variable Wattage” modes are selected. Smart mode automatically adjusts the output to the optimum level for the coil installed. Variable Wattage allows you to adjust the output yourself.
  • The Lock icon appears when you lock the device.
  • To the side of the lock icon is the “W” symbol to denote “Wattage” which is the output unit of measurement.
  • Then you have the coil resistance followed by the “Ω” symbol which denotes the resistance unit of measurement – ohms.
  • The output voltage will display when vaping (not in VWN mode). This is not the full battery voltage as this device is regulated to supply the power selected.
  • Below this is the battery charge remaining icon.
  • A puff counter and vaping time value is displayed below the battery icon.

User Modes

These are displayed at the bottom of the screen…

  • Smart VW” – the mod automatically selects the appropriate output to suit the coil resistance installed.

Protections

  • Low Battery: When the battery voltage is below 3.3V it will not fire and will display “Low Battery”. Replace battery with a fully charged one. Or if unable to, then charge using the USB Type C port.
  • Short circuit / coil low resistance: screen will display “Short Atomizer”. Clean all contacts and replace the coil.
  • Low resistance: If the coil resistance is below 0.09ohm (also the same if a short circuit) the mod will stop the output and display “Low Resistance”. Clean all contacts and replace the coil.
  • No atomiser: if the mod cannot pick up the coil resistance it will displays “Check Atomizer” and will not fire.
  • High resistance: if the coil resistance is greater than 5ohm the device will not fire and will display “Check Atomizer”. Clean all contacts and replace the coil.
  • Over time protection: If the fire button is held down for longer than 10 seconds the fire operation will stop and the screen will display “Over Time”. Continue vaping again.
  • Overheat protection: If the temperature of the circuit board reaches 60-85° the screen will display “Over Heat” and the mod will not fire until it has cooled down.

How To Install The Battery

Make sure you are clued up on battery safety before using a device with removable batteries.

Do not use batteries when the outer wrap is damaged or torn. Also batteries which are swollen or dented are dangerous.

  • Locate the small cut-out on the side of the mod and use a fingernail to lift off the battery compartment cover.gen 80s battery cover cutout
  • The bottom connection is for the positive end of the battery and is spring loaded.
  • When removing the battery pull out the negative (top) end slightly then push against the spring tension of the bottom connector to remove.
  • Install the battery according to the polarity markings in the battery compartment (positive + is bottom connector and negative – is top connector – next to the “AXON Chip” logo).gen 80s battery compartment
  • Replace the battery cover. You can attach this in 2 positions, but on the gradient finish devices it will only align in colour one way.gen 80s remove battery cover

How To Fill the Tank

  • Press the button with the Red “-” symbol on the top of the tank. The top cap will swing open.itank 2 top open
  • Insert your e-liquid bottle nozzle into the fill port to open the valve.itank 2 fill port
  • Squeeze e-liquid into the tank.itank 2 filling
  • Swing the top cap back into position until it clicks.
  • For the first fill or a new coil leave the tank to stand for 5-10 minutes for the coil to fully absorb e-liquid.

How To Change The Coil

  • Unscrew the tank base.
  • Pull out the existing coil. If there is a lot of resistance you might need to prise it from the base.itank 2 coil removal
  • Push a new coil in firmly.itank 2 coil installed
  • Replace the tank base.
  • Fill the tank as covered above, leave to stand for 5-10 minutes to allow the coil to absorb e-liquid.

How Does the Vaporesso Gen 80S iTank 2 Perform?

This is designed for DTL (Direct To Lung) vaping, so the choice of e-liquid is important.

You will need e-liquid which has a higher proportion of VG to PG.

For instance MTL kits use 50/50 PG/VG ratios which is too thin for the coils and seals in here and could cause spitting and popping. Also the more PG, the more harsh the throat hit and at 50W + you really don’t need that.

So I would suggest a minimum of 70% VG in the e-liquid and a maximum of 10mg nicotine strength. Remember this is a high output device and strong nicotine will really be amplified by the extra power and heat.

Therefore my choice of e-liquid is the Ruthless e-juice Shortfill in Energy Drank flavour. This has a 70% VG / 30% PG ratio and I have not added any nicotine.

If any of these terms are over your head – have a read of our handy guides below!

0.2ohm GTI Coil

The suggested power limits for this coil are 60 to 75W.

I started at 60W and then continued to 65W which for me was absolutely perfect.

The flavour is incredible, I can taste the sweetness and even get a lovely sweet coating on my tongue after exhaling.

Not to mention the clouds of vapour – which took me by surprise as a mainly MTL vaper nowadays!

This really is a masterclass in coil technology!

I only used this on the very basic Variable Wattage setting and found the performance incredible.

I refilled this 4 times (249 puffs) but sadly when I was playing with Pulse mode I got a dry hit and after this the coil was burnt out. Totally my fault.

0.4ohm GTI Coil

The suggested power limits for this coil are 50 to 60W.

This is another super strong coil!

I found 55W to be where my preference lay – again with the airflow 50% open.

This is slightly less fierce than the 0.2ohm but still pumps out the flavour – absolutely delicious.

Sadly I either have a cold or Covid on the way (have been around people who subsequently have tested positive) and I can hardly taste anything so I had to quit reviewing at this moment in time. Hopefully I will be able to update further on the performance from this coil.

Airflow

I use a 1-10 rating system for the airflow – with 0 = fully closed and 10 = like breathing fresh air.

With the 0.2ohm coil and the airflow fully closed this rates around a 3 – but it is pretty much impossible to even get a vape in this setting. With the airflow fully open I would rate this around 9.5 – there is very little restriction at all. I generally used this in the half open position to give a restriction of around 6-7.

The airflow with the 0.4ohm coil starts at a 3 in the fully closed position but feels slightly more restricted at fully open – rating around 8.5.

Mod Performance

The mod performed perfectly no issues – just a few niggles though!

The menu system is a bit long winded and confusing, I miss the days of just one menu, whereas here even the mode has separate and sub menus.

When you are on the last few vapes before the battery conks out the output does drop dramatically. Which is pretty normal, but I would prefer the output to cut off a lot quicker than it does as the last few vapes are not very satisfying!

Also using this at higher output levels i.e. the 65W for the 0.2ohm coil does impact battery life. So I would probably suggest only using this kit for coils / tanks which do not require higher outputs. If you are a higher output vaper perhaps look into the dual battery Gen 200 version.

I felt the output was accurate and felt like 65W.

When you have all your settings correct it is a joy to use.

User Modes

I mainly used this in the very basic VW mode (no taste modes) to just get a general feeling of operation and performance.

I have to admit to not quite understanding some of the modes.

For instance with “Smart” mode selected, the 0.2ohm coil resulted in the mod setting itself to a default 40W. This is odd considering the operating range of the coil is 60-75W? Usually smart modes default the output to a figure in the range of the recommended power limits of the coil installed?

The same thing happened with the 0.4ohm coil – the power defaulted to 40W?

The vapour felt a lot stronger and hotter using the F(t) mode. There were a lot more clouds exhaled. The flavour still felt the same as with the standard Variable Wattage – I set the device to 65W with the 0.2ohm coil in both modes.

Switching to Pulse mode it dropped the output automatically. So I set it back to the 65W I was previously using. This did feel gentler than the F(t) mode but it felt very hot and I got a dry hit? Which was weird so I didn’t experiment any more with this. Sadly this experiment also burnt out the coil?

Playing with the Variable Wattage taste modes – again with the 0.2ohm coil and set to 65W – the soft mode was more subdued than the hard mode which you could feel had a bit more of a kick!

In Variable Voltage mode I set it to 3.5V as that was the output when I was using variable wattage and it felt great.

Bypass mode was way too harsh, sadly in this mode the output will be higher with a fully charged battery and will decrease as the battery drains – so it isn’t practical if you want a constant regulated output. It will vary throughout the battery life – which is not for me really. Plus it does risk burning out your coil when the battery is fully charged so I wouldn’t recommend it.

Leaks

After fixing the initial leak I encountered no more leaks at all.

The main issue was that the inner tank chamber was leaking between the chamber and outer glass making the tank look half full. However when you added more e-liquid it spewed out of the fill port and into the centre of the coil. Which resulted in a leak through the airflow inlets in the tank base.

Once this had cleared after removing the inner chamber this was leak free which made me very happy!

Battery Life

I would usually time how long / how many puffs I got per full battery charge.

Things are a bit different here as there are so many variants.

For instance the battery you choose is one variable, the output and setting you use is another and to top it all off how often and how long you vape for is another.

So as you can see this is pretty impossible to pin down an accurate timing.

What I will say is that considering the output and mode selected, the battery life is exactly what I would expect compared to past single battery mods I have used.

Pros

  • Lovely looking kit
  • I prefer the Silver tank, some kits use coloured tanks to match the mod which results in a garish coloured tank which doesn’t match any other devices, or a mismatch of shades. However the Silver tank looks classy and will match with any other mods.
  • Has a great “C” frame styling to access the battery compartment, less chance of wear issues than a battery door system
  • The flavour was incredible – 10/10!
  • The device output felt accurate
  • Plenty of user modes to play with
  • Tank was easy to fill and push in coils were easy to change
  • No leaks (after removing the tank reducer)

Cons

  • The TPD tank reducer caused issues when filling and leaks. Once removed the tank was perfect.
  • Mod output can drop significantly for the last few vapes – which often happens.
  • Menu system is not that intuitive
  • Single battery is not practical for prolonged use at outputs over 60W (which one of the included coils needed to be used at)

Vaporesso Gen 80S iTank 2 Final Review Verdict

Some of the marks on “Build quality” and “Design” were dropped due to the 2ml limit inner tank chamber. Once that was removed the tank performed perfectly. Sadly the 2ml limit is not the fault of Vaporesso but I do feel a better solution could have been found.

“Ease of use” was impacted by the menu system and confusing array of not well explained user modes.

What I cannot deny is the absolute quality of flavour the tank outputs, it was incredible and extremely delicious with the right e-liquid.

Also the mod was comfortable in the hand, looked stunning and the build quality was excellent.

After a bit of faffing this turned out to be a dream vape, if I was a DTL vaper I would however invest in the dual battery version as the 65W I used with the 0.2ohm coil did negatively impact battery life.

If you are happier at lower outputs up to 50W this is a worthwhile device indeed. But it would perhaps possibly benefit from being compatible with a 21700 battery for those using higher outputs. This isn’t helped by the fact the included 0.2ohm coil is rated 60-75W. Perhaps Vaporesso should include a different coil for use at 50W or below.

Not to mention if you are an MTL tank fan, pop your tank on here and at 20W the battery life will be excellent.

Let me know in the comments section below your thoughts on the Vaporesso Gen 80S and iTank 2 kit.

Smok Mag Solo Kit Design and Build Quality

For this review, I will be only concentrating on the Mag Solo mod!

We do have a separate review for the T-Air Sub Ohm tank, please check it out.

Smok sent the Blue Haze design, which has a beautiful shiny metallic finish.

Smok Mag Solo Mod

This device is slim and sleek.

Smok says that it’s delicate, but I think it’s perfect for an all-day carry-around device!

The device materials include a Zinc Alloy chassis and soft-touch Faux Leather with a smoked plastic screen. The materials certainly don’t feel cheap to me!

Measuring 43.6mm in width and 95.2mm in height, the mod weighs in at 135g (without batteries). It is slightly on the weighty side but very comfortable to hold for long periods!

The shape of the mod somewhat mimics the grip of a hand weapon, when side on that is.

From The Top

The mod has a 510 connection with well-turned threading and a spring-loaded, Gold-Plated connection pin.

This device will take atomisers with a diameter of up to 32mm!

Leather Padding

Coloured soft Faux Leather padding has been added to the back of this mod, which serves as a soft cushion for your hand. The leather has stitching which gives the device a bit of individuality!

The Chassis

The device has been made of Zinc Alloy and has a metal cradle with advertising on one side saying “Smok”. The cradle surrounds the back and sides of the mod, this has been seen on other mods by different manufacturers!

The Faux Leather has been embossed with Mag Solo.

The Workface

This device has a 0.96” TFT smoked plastic screen, with 5 colour themes.

As expected the screen shows all the normal expected information.

While bright indoors, I found the screen was hard to read in direct sunlight!

Action Buttons

The mod has a rocker-type adjustment button along with a 1.5A USB Type C charge port on the workface.

Above the screen is a metal fire/action button, when pressed it has an excellent click!

Battery Housing

Operated by a simple pull-back catch, the door has been printed with all the typical information including design and legal logos.

The door has no movement when open and with batteries in it is stable with no battery rattle.

I did have to put a little pressure on the door to close it when installing a battery!

On the inside of the door, you will see that Smok has covered the whole door with a battery connection plate, which is made of Gold-Plated Stainless Steel.

Battery Compartment

This mod will run on an 18650 or a 21700 battery.

When new, the device will have the 18560 battery adaptor installed.

If you look into the battery compartment you will see a Red “+”, this is to aid battery orientation!

The compartment has also been lined with a plastic film, which helps to avoid battery short circuits due to damaged battery wraps.

The Smok Mag Solo has been designed well, with a high-quality manufacture. It’s a sleek and beautiful device that has been well-formed and it fits the hand with comfort!

Smok Mag Solo Quick Start Guide

Today I’m going to use the mod with its intended tank – the T-Air Subtank. I have installed one of the 0.4Ω mesh coils that came with the kit.

Later I put on an RTA to test the higher output of the device!

My liquid of choice is Mango Burst from E-Juice Warehouse.

Smok T-Air Sub Ohm Tank Prep

Please follow my guide for prepping the coil and filling the T-Air Subtank here.

Smok Mag Solo Mod – Basic Operation

  • Insert a 18650 or 21700 battery into the device – following the battery orientation guide inside the mod
  • The Mag Solo can be fast charged using the 1.5Amp type C charge port and cable.

However, I like to charge my batteries with an external charger, swapping them as needed

  • 5 clicks of the fire button, will turn the device on and off

When you first turn on the device you will see the start-up screen which includes design info and firmware version!

Settings

  • Use the adjustment bar to set your wattage
  • Press the fire button 3 times to completely lock the device
  • Disabling just the adjustment buttons – press both adjustment buttons together, and you will still be able to fire the mod
  • Clear Puff Count – by pressing the fire and down buttons
  • Press the fire button and the up button to switch between the mod screens 5 themed colours (Green, Yellow, Blue, Red and White)

This mod will fire between 5 and 100W.

The Mag Solo will auto-detect your atomiser and preset the wattage to match the coil resistance!

  • Smok has included 6 protection functions such as Overheat protection, 8-second toot count and short circuit protection

How Does The Smok Mag Solo Perform?

I am very impressed by the elegance of this mod! To me, it’s almost a work of art and is well worth the price tag!

The Mag Solo has functioned well in the last few weeks I have been testing it.

It fires fast and is very comfortable in my hand!

Batteries

Using a 21700 battery in the mod is a no-brainer – it gave me almost a full day of vaping.

With a 18650 battery on the other hand, it lasted me a bit less than 3hrs. This of course is down to my vaping style!

T-Air Sub Ohm Tank

I have obtained a reasonable quality of cool vapour from this tank.

With the 0.4Ω coil installed, it has lasted me two weeks of daily vaping with a wattage range between 45-35W.

Of course, I have used the Mag Solo with other atomisers, like my Hellvape Dead Rabbit 3 RTA.

With this atomiser, I was able to test out chain vaping and the higher wattage capabilities of the Mag Solo.

Test Results

After a rapid chain vaping session, roughly for 5 minutes at 70W, the overheat protection kicked in, and the mod wouldn’t function until it cooled down!

I was able to hit the full 100W for a very hot flavoursome vape.

Pros

  • Excellent Quality and Design
  • Fast firing
  • Adequate vapour production at 45W with the T-Air Subtank
  • Very comfortable in the hand
  • 21700 compatible

Cons

To be honest I couldn’t find anything really I disliked about the Smok Mag Solo.

The T-Air Sub Ohm Tank while giving adequate vapour was a little too cool for me with the 0.4Ω coil!

Final Review Verdict

Smok has been upping their game just lately with their mods. As you will be able to see from my SMOK Morph 3 review, I thought it was excellent, and now with the new Mag Solo!

This is a sleek well-designed and beautifully presented device which has the look and feel of quality to it!

The device performed extremely well with all my tests and has now entered into my daily rotation.

I would be proud to replace the mod, should the unthinkable happen!

My recommendation for this kit is that it’s suitable for those with intermediate to higher experience!

Smok Morph 3 Kit Design and Build Quality

For this review, I will only look at the Morph 3 device!

We do have a separate review for the T-Air Sub Ohm tank, please check it out.

Smok sent me the Cyan and Black design which has a gunmetal finish!

Included with my Morph 3 Kit

Is the standard size 5ml T-Air Subtank, x2 TA 0.4Ω coils, a spare 5ml glass, a few O-rings and a type C cable!

Smok Morph 3 Battery Case

This device has a boxy look to it! The mod in my opinion has a rugged but pleasingly sleek look to the eye.

The device material includes – a Zinc Alloy Chassis, Faux Leather and Smoked Plastic!

Measuring 46mm in width and 88mm in height, the device weighs in at 124g (without batteries). I can assure you while it’s a heavy mod it’s very comfortable to hold for long periods due to its leather padding.

The device is quick to fire and does so easily in either hand!

From the Top

The mod has a centre weighted 510 connection with threading that has been turned well. It has a spring-loaded, Gold-plated connection pin.

This device will take atomisers easily with a diameter of up to 33mm!

Leather Padding

A dual-coloured faux Leather padding has been added to the front, sides and most of the back, serving as a soft cushion in your hand.

The leather on mine has stitching separating the dual colours.

Back of the device

As you can see the back has a pattern cut into the metal chassis and it forms almost a bar effect. The metal has been embossed with “MORPH 3”, which has then been inlaid with a shiny foil!

The Workface

Incorporates a 0.96 inch colour TFT smoked plastic screen, that has been raised from the body. The screen is a little on the dark side and can’t be read well in direct sunlight.

As you would expect the screen shows all the normal expected information!

Action Buttons

The mod has a rocker-type adjustment button along with a 2 Amp USB Type C charge port on the workface.

On one side of the mod is a metal fire/action button, which does have a nice click when pressed!

Under the fire button, the Leather has been embossed with the advertising mark “Smok”.

Battery Housing

Operated by a simple pull-back switch, the door has been printed with all the normal information including design and safety info.

The door on mine feels a little loose when open, but with batteries in, it is stable with no battery rattle.

I did have to put quite a bit of pressure on the door to close it when I installed the batteries!

On the inside of the door has been printed with a White “+” and “–” serving as a battery orientation guide.

Battery Sled

Looking into the battery case, you will see a Blue minus and Red plus symbol and Gold-plated connection points.

The battery sled has been lined with plastic film to help avoid battery shorts!

The Smok Morph 3 has been designed well with great manufacturing quality, it’s sleek, rugged and well-formed.

It looks like it should cost more than the actual retail price!

Smok Morph 3 Quick Start Guide

Today I’m going to use the mod with its intended tank – the T-Air Sub Ohm tank. I have installed the 0.4Ω mesh coil that came with the kit.

And my liquid of choice is “Strawberry Yog” from E-Juice Warehouse.

  • Clear Puff Count via the menu or press the fire and down key
  • The fire button and up key to switch between the screen themes 5 colours (Green, Purple, Red, Blue and White)
  • Disabling the adjustment buttons – press both adjustment buttons together, you will however still be able to fire the mod

The output of this mod will vary depending on your mode and setting – firing between 5 and 230W in VW mode and up to 600f in TC mode.

BTW the Morph 3 will also auto-detect your atomiser and preset the wattage to that of your coil resistance!

How Does the Smok Morph 3 Perform?

Smok has said in the promotional literature that the chipset for this device has been updated – so far I am unable to find out further info on this!

However – it does have 8 protection modes available like low battery, short circuit and 8-second toot.

Vaping Action

Speaking purely as a standard TC/VW device, the Morph 3 has been golden for me in the few weeks I have been using it is fast to fire and comfortable in my hand. Whilst on the heavy side (not everyone’s cup of tea) I found it a pleasure to use!

T-Air Sub Ohm Tank

I have obtained a reasonable quality of cool vapour from this tank, the 0.4Ω coil that came with the kit has lasted me two weeks of constant use at 45/35W.

Of course, I have used the Morph 3 using other atomisers, my Hellvape Dead Rabbit 3 RTA at 75W and my Hellvape Dead Rabbit Pro RDA up to 100W.

With both these atomisers, I was able to test out the chain vaping capabilities of the Morph 3 – which I have to say was rather good!

Temp Control

While I don’t use temp control in my normal day-to-day vaping these days, I tested the TC functions using a pair of DIY 0.15Ω Stainless Steel flat wire coils.

I Set the Morph 3 for SS at 420f and 60W, the device functioned faultlessly with warm and tasty vapour!

Pros

  • Very good quality and design
  • Fast firing
  • Adequate vapour production at 45W with the T-Air Subtank
  • Comfortable in the hand
  • Long dual battery life

Cons

  • The weight of the mod might be a concern for some
  • Closing the door with batteries installed needed pressure

Final Review Verdict

Now I don’t say this often about Smok products, but this is a sleek well-designed mod that has the look and feel of quality to it!

The device performed admirably with all my tests.

Taking into account the size and weight of the Morph 3, I would recommend this kit to those that like a heavy device with intermediate or higher experience.
