1. SMOKO Vape Starter Kit (Editors Choice – Best For Beginners)

smoko - best vape pen for prefilled cartridges
The Smoko Vape starter kit is undoubtedly the easiest vape for new vapers to get to grips with. Why is that? Well this device comes with pre-filled cartridges. So no messing about choosing and filling with e-liquid, no mess.

We weren’t actually expecting much from this kit when it came in for review with it appearing, on the surface, to be too basic. How wrong were we!

The build quality is excellent throughout, the battery life very good but what impressed us the most was the cartridge flavours. The tobacco/cigar and menthol flavours on offer do a superb job at replicating the real thing and the fruit flavours have been nailed. There is also no huge cloud production for those that don’t want to fog out a room.

Even the biggest smoking technophobe could have this working out of the box, crikey, you don’t even need to press a button to vape as it’s draw activated! Plus, with these flavours there is a high chance the SMOKO vape pen will keep you off the cigs.

As our reviewer said “One of the best starter kits I’ve reviewed…absolutely PERFECT for those smokers looking to quit.” Believe me when I say he’s pretty hard to please! If you are looking for a simple to use device with pre-filled cartridges/tanks at an excellent price then this is the one we recommend.

Features

  • Super simple to use – The perfect kit for a ‘pick up and play’ vape
  • Pre-filled cartridges = No mess
  • Superb flavours
  • Cheap!
  • Draw activated – No buttons to press

2. ePuffer Titan X (Best Quality)

ePuffer Titan X - For beginnersThe ePuffer Titan X is for vapers that want a device that is built to last. The stainless steel construction gives it an expensive feel without feeling too heavy.

Like many devices the Titan X offers both Mouth to Lung (MTL) and Direct to Lung (DTL) coils. Where this devices excels though is with it’s mouth to lung coil. The flavour is superb and the throat hit and draw it provides replicates a cigarette well.

The battery life is very good with the internal 1500mAh capacity and when it comes to filling it couldn’t be easier with it’s top fill system. Easy to refill on the go..

One of the best quality kits on the list and one to keep in mind.

Features

  • Very good battery life – 1500 mAh Battery
  • Easy top fill tank
  • 2 X Coil heads included – 0.4ohm and 1.0Ohm
  • Superb build quality
  • Excellent kit for new vapers.

3. Vaporesso Sky Solo Plus (Best Vape Pen for Clouds)

vaporesso sky solo plus cloudsVape pens aren’t just for the mouth to lung vapers out there. The Vaporesso Sky Solo Plus offers a sub ohm vape pen specifically for the direct to lung vaping crowd. It’s a good one as well!

It defintetly does a good job of kicking out some decent clouds but that’s not the only thing it does well. The GT Mesh coils do a very good job at delivering on flavour too.

The Sky Solo Plus is an ‘all in one’ style of device. So rather than having a separate tank that screws off and houses the coil, you simply screw the coil into the top of the battery and the glass tank section is then fitted over the top.

The tank is a top fill so all good there and the battery offers a huge 3000mAh capacity. It’s needed though as this can output upto 90W.

One to add to your list if you like a bit of cloud with your vape pen!

Features

  • Very good flavour
  • 3000mAh batery
  • Big clouds
  • Includes 2 Mesh coils
  • All in one style device

4. Jacvapour Series S-17 (Best For Both MTL & DTL Vaping)

Jacvapour Series S17 Review
The Jacvapour Series S vape pen is high up there in our favourite list at ecigclick.

It manages to keep a compact form while still offering plenty of battery life with it’s 900mAh battery.

The Series S17 is a plug and play type device. No variable wattage setting to be getting your knickers in a twist with. The battery recognises different resistances from your coil and sets the best output wattage accordingly.

The kit comes complete with a tank that offers very good flavour. All you need to do is add e juice. With the two coil options it also offers a vaping style to fit mouth to lung and restricted direct to lung vapers.

Tip: We would recommend buying a second battery with the kit to act as a backup and use in rotation so you are never ‘vape-less’ due to charging or the battery running out suddenly.

Features

  • 1 x 900 mah battery
  • 1 X tank
  • 2 x Atomizer Coils (Mouth-To-Lung and Sub Ohm coil)
  • 1 X USB Charger
  • Great for all levels of vaper and very easy to use

5. Innokin Endura T18II (Best Selling Vape Pen)

Innokin Endura T18 2The Endura range of e cigs has been one of the most popular for new users for the last couple of years. In this time we’ve seen a few upgrades with the latest being the Endura T18II.

Innokin have done a great job with the T18II making it not only one of the best performers but also one of the easiest e cigarettes for new vapers to pick up and use. The kit comes complete with two 1.5Ohm coils and also features vape while charging technology and a top filling tank.

The 1500mAh battery offers a good amount of vaping time and comes with three heat settings and airflow control further allowing you to tweak the vape to fit you.

This really is an e cigarette that just needs e-liquid to use right out of the box.

It’s also a great looking bit of kit available in a number of colours!

Features

  • 1 X 1500 mAh battery
  • 1 X Top Fill Endura T18II tank
  • 2 X 1.5 ohm Coil Heads
  • 3 X power output settings

7. XEO Void (Best For MTL Vaping)

XEO void vape pen in handIf you are looking for something that little bit different in terms of aesthetics then the XEO Void kit could be the one.

A very well built device, designed in Germany, that offers both mouth to lung and direct to lung vaping although this really excels in the MTL vape department.

This is more of an All In One (AIO) vape pen. By this we mean there is no separate tank as you will see with other vape kits. The tank section is actually built into the top of the e cig.

Don’t worry if that sounds confusing! This kit is new vaper friendly. Simply pop your coil in, fill with juice and vape.

No matter which resistance coil you use the battery will automatically detect and adjust accordingly, the only thing you have to worry about is what flavour e-juice you are going to pick!

Features

  • Good price point
  • Excellent quality
  • Everything you need to get started
  • Very good 1500 mAh battery
  • Caters to both Mouth to Lung (MTL) and Direct to Lung (DTL) vapers

8. Apollo OHM Go Starter Kit (Reviewers Favourite)

Apollo Ohm Go - Best OverallAs stick pens go, the Apollo Ohm Go starter kit is one of the most popular for new vapers. The kit combines ease of use and performance to make it a perfect for first time vapers. Not to mention it looks fantastic too!

The OHM Go vape gives you a 1900 mAh battery and a tank that is supplied with 0.5Ohm and 1.0Ohm coils.

If you are new to vaping the two supplied coils allow you to experience both sub ohm vaping (direct to lung) and mouth to lung vaping. The latter of which is similar to how most smoke a cigarette.

It’s super easy to use. There are no fiddly settings to use, the battery recognises the coil resistance and automatically changes the power output for the optimum vape. The tank is top fill cutting down on any mess made.

This is pretty much a plug and play device. Just add e liquid.

One thing to keep in mind is that with the mouth to lung (MTL) coil it may be a little looser than you may be used to from smoking a cigarette. We would however recommend this for those that would like the option to vape 2 ways.

Features

  • Perfect beginner vape pen kit
  • No confusing controls
  • 1900 mAh battery that offers extended vaping time between charges
  • 1 X Apollo Portal Refill Tank (Top Fill)
  • 2 X Coils (Mouth to lung and sub ohm supplied)
  • USB & Wall charger included

9. Aspire Tigon (Best Aspire Vape Pen)

tigon kit coloursThe Aspire Tigon kit offers a great starting point for vapers that like a mouth to lung vape but also like the idea of trying direct to lung vaping.

It’s a high quality piece of kit, both the battery and the mod are finished beautifully.

Depending on where you are buying the Tigon kit the battery will either be 2600mAh (standard edition) or 1800mAh (TPD edition).

The kit also comes with a 1.2Ohm MTL coil and 0.4Ohm direct to lung coil.

But.. The stand out for this kit is how it vapes. It delivers great flavour in both vape styles.

Features

  • 2600mAh Battery / 1800mAh (TPD)
  • 2 X coils included
  • Both MTL and DTL vape styles catered for.
  • Excellent build quality
  • Great option for all levels of vaper

10. Innokin Jem Pen (Best Value)

Innokin Jem Pen - Best Cheap Vape PenThe Jem Pen is one of the newer kits on the list as well as being one of the cheapest. Don’t worry though, this is still a top quality device.

When it comes to delivering a perfect vape for those coming over from cigarettes then this is up there with the best. That’s not to say it’s only for new vapers. If you vape Mouth to Lung (MTL) then this is a quality option, whether it be a backup or main device.

What surprised us most about this kit though is the flavour that it pumps out. Excellent.

It’s a very slim lined vape as well making it highly portable and easy to slip into a shirt or jean pocket.

Did we mention that the coils last an age and this has top fill making it super easy to use?

Features

  • Good battery life
  • Great for vapers making the switch – Vapes like a cigarette
  • Slimline
  • Great value
  • Very good flavour
  • New and current MTL vapers alike will get on well with this vape kit.

What Is A Vape Pen?

There are a number of names for these devices, from vape pens, vaporizer pens, e pens or even an e cig vape pen.. Now they are all the same thing apart from a vaporizer pen is commonly used to describe a device that can be used with dry herb or wax. If you are looking for this type of device then the V2 Series Pro above can be used to vape that type of stuff.

The image below shows the basic components of a vape pen.
What is a vape pen?E cig vape pens are basically made up of two main parts – the battery and the tank or clearomizer. They get their name as the first vape pens were of similar size to a fountain pen.

They can be refilled with any e-liquid you choose opening up a world of fantastic e-juice flavours! Although there are a handful of disposable tanks on the market that are paired with a battery. If you choose one of these you replace the whole tank rather than just the coil that sits in the tank.

All the vape pens above are available in the UK meaning they are TPD compatible.

You may have also seen cig-a-like e cigarettes that, as the name suggest, look more like cigarettes. Many smokers opt for these as their first vaping device as they provide a familiar form.

While cig-a-likes can indeed be a good springboard into vaping they can lack the battery power and flavour choice of vaping pens and this plays a big part in your success rates of staying off the fags.

What are the Different Kind of Vape Pens?

Vape Pens For E-Liquid

These vape pens are what we are focusing on with our ‘best of’ list. These can be filled with standard vape juice and nicotine salts.

Vape Pens for CBD Vape Oil

CBD (Cannabidiol) is very popular and luckily you can use standard vape pens to vape CBD. You will need to check the PG/VG ratio of the CBD e-liquid as you would with standard vape juice to choose the right device. You can see our best cbd vape oil here.

Vaporizers Pens for Dry Herb

These work in a different way to standard vape pens. Vaporizers feature an oven/heating chamber that you pack your dry herb or tobacco into. This oven then takes a few minutes to heat the dry herb ready to vape.

3 in 1 Vape Pens

This is where things get interesting for vapers looking to vape dry herb, wax/oil and e-liquid. Of course, not all at the same time.

3 in 1 vaporizers, such as the V2 Pro Series 3 listed above, are available with different tank/chambers that can be used with different material.

How Does a Vape Pen Work?

This is a very basic explanation but it’s quite simple.

The battery provides electric current to the coil in the atomizer (tank). There is cotton wrapped around the coil that will be saturated in e-liquid. The coil heats up and then vapourizes the e-liquid that is soaked into the cotton. This results in the vapour that you inhale. I said it was simple right?

How Do I Use a Vape Pen?

Vape pens come in various shapes and sizes but all tend to work in a similar way. You have two main parts – a battery and a vape tank. The battery is the main body of the device that you hold. The tank includes a coil that, depending on what stick pen you choose, will be:

  • Replaceable coil – (when flavour drops simply replace the coil head)
  • Disposable tank – (Whole tank is replaced when coil dies)

When you take your vape out of the box for the first time we recommended you get acquainted with your tank before filling with vape juice. So, take it off the battery and disassemble and reassemble a few times. By doing this you will be in a better position when the time comes to replace the coil after use.

OK.. So you know your tank and how it all fits together, excellent. Now we move onto filling and vaping.

This is a general ‘how to’ and will work for most vape sticks.

  1. First, read the instructions included with your kit 🙂
  2. Charge your battery using the supplied cable
  3. If a coil is already installed you can move straight to the next step. If not insert the coil according to specific instructions for your tank.
  4. Fill the tank – This may be top fill or bottom fill. Again, follow the instructions to see what type of fill method your tank has
  5. Once filled, allw tank to stand for 10 minutes. This allows the liquid to soak into the cotton in the coils. If you do not follow this step you run the risk of burning the cotton which means you will need to replace the coil!
  6. If you have a push button vape pen ensure battery is turned on (Usually 5 quick clicks of the fire button)
  7. Press the button down and inhale
  8. You are vaping 🙂

How to Choose the Right Vape Pen For You?

There are a few thing to look out for when choosing a vape pen. Do you want a small, lightweight device that will slip into a shirt pocket with ease? Do you want something that feels solid and built to last? Do you want the longest battery life possible? Do you want to vape mouth to lung (like smoking a cigarette) or sub ohm vape (direct to lung)? All of these questions need to be taken into account.

We have all options above. All of them have the vaping industry standard safety features built in.

Sub Ohm Vapes for Direct to Lung (DTL) Vaping

Twister Metal Edition in blue and black
These are higher powered vape pens that are for those that prefer a bigger, warmer clouds and fuller flavour. The big difference between these and your standard vape pen is that they are vaped direct to lung (DTL) style. They have wide mouthpieces/drip tips that allow a huge amount of vapour to be drawn. They should be used with a minimum e-liquid ratio of 70VG. The downside is that they use a lot more e-liquid due to the higher wattage used.

If you are a beginner or looking for a first vape device then these aren’t always recommended. After smoking this can be a very odd way of getting your nicotine hit as the vapour is drawn directly into your lungs rather than into the mouth first, like you would smoke a cigarette.

The Freemax Twister above is a a great example of a superb sub ohm vape pen.

Vapes for Mouth to Lung (MTL) Vaping

Innokin JEM Pen in handThese are generally smaller in size than the sub ohm vape pens above. They don’t require as much power as the coils are smaller in both size and resistance (Ohms). These are perfect starting points for new vapers making the switch from cigarettes as they are closer to the style of smoking.

For a lightweight, slim device the Innokin Jem Pen is a great choice. For an all rounder that offers great flavour and excellent build quality then the Apollo Ohm Go is recommended. If you are looking for something that is pure quality in terms of build then the ePuffer Titan is the one for us.

Automatic Vape Pen or Button Press?

When we say automatic we are talking about vaping without pressing any buttons. With an automatic firing vape you simply inhale and the device activates.

With a button operation vape you need to first press the fire button and then inhale. There are benefits to both, I personally prefer a fire button as it allows me to ‘pre-heat’ the coil for a split second before I vape.

Variable Wattage

There are a number of vape pens on the market that offer variable wattage. This just allows you to control of the wattage you vape at. Maybe you have an fruit e juice that is best a lower wattages and a dessert e juice that shines at higher wattage. With this type of device you can adjust to your preferences.

The Twister by Freemax is one such vaping device.

Conclusion

So there we have it.. Our top picks to help you choose the best vape pens in 2024. You really can’t go too far wrong with the above products, very simple to use and great for beginners and pretty much all experience levels.

As always, any questions you may have on what vape pen to buy please ask in the comments below!

Frequently Asked Vape Pen Questions

What E-Liquid Can You Use in a Vape Pen?

It all depends on the vape pen. For Mouth to Lung (MTL) you can use nic salts, 50PG/50VG as well as 60VG in most. For a true sub ohm vape pen you will want to use 70VG+.

Let’s break down the two main vape pens that you will come across on your search for the best pen style vape.
Mouth to Lung (MTL)
The first is where you vape mouth to lung (like a cigarette) and will generally use a coil resistance above 1.0 Ohm. I say generally as pen vapes do now include sub ohm coils that can also be used for MTL vaping.

For this type we recommend the following vape juice:

  • 50PG / 50VG e-liquid
  • 40PG / 60VG e-liquid
  • Nicotine salt e-liquid

Sub Ohm/Direct to Lung (DTL)
The second are sub ohm vape pens that has coils with a resistance below 1.0 Ohm. So it could be 0.15 or 0.2Ohm coils that are included with the Freemax Twister. These coils are BIG and can be used with higher VG (thicker) e-liquid! These are what we like to call ‘true sub ohm vapes’.

For true sub ohm vape pens we recommend the following e-juice:

  • A minimum of 30PG / 70VG right up to 100VG.

Some Vape Pens Offer Two Types of Coil
For those above that offer two types of coil (1.0 Ohm+ and a lower resistance coil under 1.0 Ohm) it is best to use the recommended coils above for mouth to lung.

For the coils that are under 1.0 Ohm with these types of vape pens, while they can offer a direct to lung vape and are technically sub ohm, the coils are small so provide more of a restrictive DTL vape. Devices such as the Jacvapour S17 and Apollo Ohm Go fall into this category.

We recommend the following e-liquid:

  • 40PG / 60VG
  • 30PG / 70VG
  • Nic Salt
  • 50PG / 50VG

How Do You Charge a Vape Pen?

Your kit will include a USB charge cable. This is generally used to charge your vape using a laptop, PC or compatible adapter plug. Simply plug one end of the cable into the battery and the other into your PC

There is usually a light that indicates when the charge is complete. The charge light may simply go out as well. Without sounding like a broke record, your instructions will tell you what to look out for.

It can take anywhere from 1-2 hours to charge fully. This will be dependent on the battery capacity. The larger capacity the longer it will take.

Quick note on safety: Please only use the charging cable supplied with the kit. Do not use phone chargers or any other type of charger that was not intended for e cigarette charging.

How Do You Clean A Vape Pen?

We would recommend cleaning your vape tank on each coil change. Here are a few easy steps to follow:

  • Remove tank from battery
  • Take tank apart and remove used coil
  • Rinse/soak tank in warm water
  • Ensure you clean the threading at the base of the tank
  • Use a paper towel to dry or simply leave to air dry
  • To clean your batter simply use a paper towel (dry) and clean the threaded section

How Much Does A Vape Pen Cost?

You may have seen cheap vape pens in your local gas/petrol station but we would recommend buying one that offers a bit more in terms of quality. That doesn’t mean they have to be expensive though.

You can buy good quality, cheap vape pens from £10.99. Check out the JAC Vapour S17 and Innokin Jem Pen above. All you have to do is then add e-liquid. Even our favourite options for new users comes in at less than £20, that’s with e-liquid!

Where Can I Buy Vape Pens?

If you have a local vape shop then you can pay them a visit. Any good vape shop will have samples that you can use or at the very least talk you through the different types of vaporizer pen available.

Like many, I personally like to shop online as that is where I find the best prices and deals. All of the options above have links to the best places to buy online.

What Are the Best Brands?

There are many trusted brands that make vape pens. Our favourites are:

  • ePuffer
  • SMOKO
  • Aspire
  • Innokin
  • For sub ohm then the Freemax Twister is excellent
  • If you are looking for a UK vape pen brand then JAC Vapour are our go to.

What Are The Benefits to Using Vape Pens?

They are usually compact, easy to carry around and they are very easy to use which makes them a good entry point for new vapers.

“Oh No” I hear you say not another Pod kit – but wait Innokin have added their own wrinkle to the kit and that’s worth a look!

Founded in China 2011, Innokin is considered by many to be the Grand Daddy of vaping, their extensive back catalogue of devices and tanks is impressive!

Many of Innokin’s early kits have moved into vape legend status including the iconic Cool fire 2, Itaste MVP V2 and iTaste VV.

Innokin Sceptre Tube eliquid

Some of their latest kits include the Kroma 217 Z Force, Endura T22 Pro and let’s not forget Innokin is a market leader for MTL tank design with the likes of the Ares 2 MTL RTA and Zenith Pro tank.

What Can We Expect From the Innokin Sceptre Tube Kit?

While you may be forgiven for thinking that the Sceptre Tube is just an updated version of the previous Sceptre pod kit and Sceptre MTL pod kit in a different body, I can assure you this is a different animal!

sceptre pod tube
Left = Sceptre Pod Kit, right = Sceptre Tube Kit

OK to condense things down a bit, yes the kit is classed as a pod system but I would personally class it as restricted DTL device in comparison to the other versions.

Innokin Sceptre Tube in hand

We tell you what the terms MTL and DTL mean in our Guide To Vape Styles.

The kit comes with a top slide fill pod tank and has an internal 1300mah battery housed in a conventional tube body and with 2 power modes making it an easy to use pen like device.sceptre tube components

 Design and Build Quality

As I have said in past reviews I’m not really a pod person (lol) and I specifically hate 2ml tanks, this kit includes both, I’m however impressed with the tank given its limited liquid capacity!

The tube design does hark back to the early days of vaping when tube/pen mods ruled the vape scene.

The kit is well made with great quality, it’s comfortable to hold; given my fairly large hand size it feels almost stealthy to me!Innokin Sceptre Tube packaging

This device is made of Zinc alloy and measures in at approximately 85mm tall, and has a 20mm wide pod bay and weighs around 50g. With the pod tank in place the Sceptre Tube measures in at just over 110mm.Innokin Sceptre Tube 2 of 6 colours

When in use it has constant output wattage, the battery is responsive with a quick fire!

Innokin Sceptre Tube – Fire Switch

The device is controlled with a plastic fire switch, which btw has a nice clicky feel to it. The switch functions as a mode changer, fire button and as the on & off switch.

Surrounding the switch is the LED indicator which changes colour to display the battery charge level, power level and fault conditions.

A Type C USB charge port is provided, which will charge the 1300mah battery at the rate of 1 amp, using the supplied cable. A full charge takes approximately 2 hours but the device does have a pass-through capability so you can vape it while it’s being charged!Innokin Sceptre Tube type c port

Of course both the tube and the pod tank have safety marks printed on them as well as the relevant Innokin advertising.Innokin Sceptre Tube safety marks

How Does the Innokin Sceptre Tube Kit Perform?

For this review I will be filling the Pod Tank with Kwik Vape “Fruitberry Sherbet” an irresistible taste of mixed berries with a touch of sharpness to it!Innokin Sceptre Tube kit and liquid

Basic Quick Start Guide

Innokin Pod Tank

  • Remove the tank from the device

If this is the first time you are setting this kit up, remove the sticker from the coil adaptor.Innokin Sceptre Tube sticker on coil

  • Prime your coil with a few drops of e-liquid and place the coil in the podInnokin Sceptre Tube pre coil
  • Push open the fill port and fill with e-liquidInnokin Sceptre Tube pod fill

Let the tank stand in the device for about 3 minutes before firing so the cotton can soak up more e-liquid.

Sceptre Tube Mod

Make sure the device is fully charged before first use! I recommend this as mine had only a ¼ charge to it!Innokin Sceptre Tube charge

Functions

The Innokin Sceptre Tube kit is straightforward to use.

  • 3 quick presses of the fire button will turn the Sceptre Tube on/off.
  • 2 presses of the fire button will switch between the two wattage settings – do this until the LED changes to the colour of the setting you require. Purple for High (20W) or Blue for Low (18W).Innokin Sceptre Tube 18 to 20w
  • A single longer press of the button activates the device.

The only visual indication the Sceptre Tube gives is the multi-coloured LEDs that surround the fire button, lighting up when the pod is inserted and lighting up when you toot on the device.

The colour changing LED will highlight the status of the battery with 3 different colours as shown below, (years ago we called this the traffic light system), and 2 colours when on charge!

  • Green – Greater than 50% of charge
  • Yellow – Between 10% – 50% of charge
  • Red – Less than 10% of charge remainingInnokin Sceptre Tube battery state
  • Charging – LED illuminates Red then Green
  • Full charge – Green LED extinguishes when fully charged
  • Current battery status – LED colour flashes twice after fire button is pressed
  • Low battery – LED flashes Red 8 times
  • Pod inserted – LED illuminates Blue for 2 seconds
  • Short circuit – LED remains Red for 5 seconds
  • No atomiser – LED flashes Green 5 times
  • Overtime protection is 10 seconds – LED flashes Red 10 times when the fire button has been pressed for over 10 seconds.

Innokin Sceptre Tube – In Use

Well the Sceptre Tube Kit was a surprise! To be frank I wasn’t sure if it would fit my style of vaping, I’m now looking at this one as a second carry around mod!Innokin Sceptre Tube use ready

With the airflow open fully; I received a nice restricted DTL vape with fairly good flavour at 18 and 20W.Innokin Sceptre Tube toot rdtl

Reducing the airflow for a draw that is a full on flavour; quite literally I believe the flavour produced by this kit will amaze dedicated mouth to lung users!Innokin Sceptre Tube toot mtl

Coil and Battery life

I have been using this kit for almost 2 weeks; the pre-installed 0.5Ω S Coil lasted me around 7 days as an MTL coil, the other 0.5Ω S Coil I used as a restricted DTL coil, it lasted just over 5 days!

Innokin Sceptre Tube 5 pack coils

The 1300mah battery was very good as an MTL device lasting over a whole day at work!

As a restricted DTL device the Sceptre Tube battery lasted approx 4 hours depending on how I tooted it!Innokin Sceptre Tube stealth

The big question I really wanted to know!

Does the pod tank leak?

My quick answer is No! However I have found a little moisture in the pod bay which I put down to condensation, not a big problem just something to keep an eye on!

One thing to look out for, while in my pocket the slide fill port sometimes comes open!

Pros

  • Quality and Design are very good
  • Good battery life
  • Comfortable in hand
  • The 0.5Ω coil has lasted me very well
  • Good retail price

Cons

I have no big concerns with this kit

Final Review Verdict

This is one of those kits that for me it’s in the grey area; I love it and hate it at the same time!

Being a restricted DTL the kit fits my vape style wonderfully, although the liquid capacity does drive me mad lol. The flavour if used as an MTL device is out of this world!

Would I recommend the Innokin Sceptre Tube?

“Yes”, this kit would be suitable for all levels of vape experience.

Would I buy this device again due loss or damage?

I like to carry a small device as a backup and this kit fits that bill well, so “Yes” I would replace it.

Let me know if you have used the Innokin Sceptre Tube Kit in the comments below!

Today it looks like we’re finally getting something a bit different with the Geekvape G18 Starter Pen kit.

Before you argue that point I don’t mean different as in innovative, rather that it’s had the chance to finally float to the surface after a tidal wave of pod kit releases.

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit Hand Check pic 1

And just when I thought pen style devices were doomed to a watery grave.

I find it a bit ironic that Geekvape itself has contributed quite heavily to the pod kit gravitational pull in, I mean, just take a look at the Aegis range.

It does looks like the tide is turning though and by lumping this release in under their “others” category I have to ask, what are Geekvape trying to spell out by going against the flow?

Could it really be an attempt to throw distance between themselves and a vaping sub genre that for some at least has grown old, stale and predictable?

Does this vape pen signal the return of increased portability, ease of use and the concentrated flavour generally assigned to MTL vape Pen products?

It’s probably time I stopped reminiscing and answered a few questions before I find myself up to my neck in it again. This time the proverbial hot water lol!

What Can We Expect From the Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit?

Because this is a starter kit, the Geekvape G18 pen has been designed specifically for the new vaper or lovers of all things MTL. It’s very low powered so I’m expecting a healthy lifespan from the 1300mAh integrated battery.

The airflow to the coils is from beneath so there should be plenty of decent flavour when using the three step voltage control.

The devices portability should play a key factor in its ability to use in an everyday working environment and hopefully the top filling system will allow for quick and discreet top ups.

Inside the Box

I received the reviewers edition of the kit in a 6×5 inch box. Some might suggest extravagant – I just thought it was overkill for what was inside, which was:

  • G18 atomiser (2ml capacity)
  • Type C USB charging cable
  • G series MTL coil 1.2ohm (pre installed)
  • G series MTL coil 1.8ohm

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit – Key Features

We’re looking at pen style portability so the Geekvape G18 Starter kit is going to be well suited in a shirt or trouser pocket.

Thanks to a 1300mAh capacity, the battery will last for at least a day before being needing a recharge via type C USB connectivity.

colours

The deck has been designed to be leak proof and includes three different sized and fully adjustable airflow slots to tweak flavour requirements.

Two of the coils from the Geekvape G series have been included but there are others available including a mesh 1.2ohm alternative.

Something else to keep in mind is that they are also compatible with the Geekvape Wenax Stylus, Aegis Pod and Wenax C1 pod kits.

There’s an extensive range of colours to pick from and these are Black, Rainbow, Stainless Steel, Wood (under review), Royal Blue, Malachite, Aqua and Scarlett.

Malachite

Now there’s a colour! If your mindset is anything like mine you’ll be intrigued to learn that it’s actually a dark green. Not exactly what sprang to mind lol!

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit – Design and Build Quality

Geekvape G18 Battery Section

Without the tank, the battery measures 88mm in height and bang on 18mm in diameter.

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit 510 spring loaded battery contact

The top and base have a nice reflective chrome finish.

The internal threading above the spring loaded 510 connector is butter smooth as demonstrated when screwing down the tank.

I did notice a very small amount of daylight between the two when fully tightened but that’s just me nit picking again…

Geekvape G18 Starter pen Kit Type C usb charging port

The USB connector pin is adequately recessed into the base of the battery but it’s my usual headache! No vertical charging possible.

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit battery section

I have to say I’m impressed with the actual wood effect finish on the main body. It’s clearly been rolled on but I couldn’t find or feel a seam. Just below the fire button is the Geekvape logo which fails to look aesthetically pleasing.

It cheapens the appearance of what is otherwise a very classy looking colour scheme.

Relight My Fire Button

It’s great to see that the fire button is raised for ease of locating. It’s also relatively quiet when pressed yet certainly very responsive.

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit fire button and LED strength indicator

The LED surrounding it is bright which is just as well. Why? Because this is your only mode of voltage/power navigation. Let’s get into that now.

  • Press the fire button five times to turn the device on or off
  • Press the fire button three times to step through the voltage/power output modes

When the device is switched on the LED will flash blue. To confirm it has been switched off the LED will briefly flash green.

On the initial power up, the default constant voltage output is set above 3.7V as denoted by a flashing green LED.

  • Blue LED – constant 3.4V output
  • Red LED – constant 3.1V output

Please note! The chip remembers your previous voltage setting even when the battery has been switched off.

Geekvape G18 Tank Section

There’s no difference between the standard and TPD release. Both tanks have a maximum juice capacity of 2ml.

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit Tank section

First things first. Geekvape are referring to this as its crystal clear visible pod.

They’re right in one respect and (in my opinion) wrong on the other. I would class this as a tank simply because of the 510 connector. It is however, crystal clear and because it’s a tank all e liquid is visible. Pods are usually recessed and connected via magnets.

Bit of a rant.. I just think there has to be a way of distinguishing the two.

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit protruding 510 pin

Underneath the tank there’s a protruding gold plated 510 pin that’s sure to provide additional conductivity to the installed coil. As already mentioned, the threading is silky smooth and very well engineered.

The tank has a height of 47.8mm from the top of the moulded 510 drip tip to the base.

Speaking of the 510 drip tip, I measured the internal bore to be a mere 3.5mm. So we’re definitely talking true MTL restrictions.

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit inside the chimney showing silicone washer seal

There’s maybe a little bit of doming inside the chimney. A silicone seal has been incorporated to provide additional seal for the plug and play coil.

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit – Installing A Coil

  • Unscrew the deck by turning clockwise
  • Push the coil up into the chimney section ensuring a firm seal
  • Screw the deck back onto the tank

Make sure the plug and play coil is firmly seated

Bottom Adjustable Airflow

You’ve a choice of three adjustable airflow options, all of which catering for the MTL vaper. Because it’s strictly MTL there’s no duality to it either.

The far left option will give the tightest restriction as denoted by the smallest pin hole.

Geekvape G18 Starter pen Kit tightest airflow restriction MTL

Rotating the airflow control ring to the right marginally increases airflow. I did notice there’s very little difference in pinhole size to the third option. How that translates to the vaping experience we’re about to find out.

Let’s get ourselves juiced up first though!

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit – Filling the Tank

The threading on the removeable top cap is made of plastic.

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit underside of removeable top cap

The top cap is also very small so take additional time when handling it. Lose it and it’s vape over!

With the plug and play coil already installed:

  • Grab the moulded drip tip and turn it anticlockwise to remove the top cap

Starter Pen Kit dual fill ports

  • Gently pour e liquid through one of the two fill ports taking care not to overfill
  • Screw the top cap back into place
  • Allow five minutes for the e liquid to soak into the cotton before vaping

I know I’m mentioning dual fill ports but while filling, the other one also allows air to escape. This dramatically improves the time it takes to fill the tank.

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit – How Does It Perform?

The Geekvape G series also includes the G 1.2M mesh coil, G 0.8 and G 0.6 coil. All of which are compatible with the G18 Starter Pen Kit.

Geekvape G series 1.2ohm Kanthal wire coil (8W – 12W)

Both tests were carried out using maximum available power from the coils, in this case 12W.

This would also give me a rough idea of how the battery would fare under standard vaping patterns.

Starter kit 1.2ohm G series MTL coil pic2

I used Riot Squad Cherry Fizzle, containing a 10mg hybrid salt content with a 50VG/50PG liquid ratio.

With the pinhole setting at its widest I certainly got an airy MTL vape. One that was a bit too loose to pass sufficiently as the draw experienced from a cigarette.

There seemed to be adequate power pumping through the coil but not enough to offer up a great deal in the way of flavour. It was still OK but just lacked any fizzle alongside the cherry.

Geekvape G18 Mid airflow restriction

My concerns about the similar size airflow slot were pretty much justified. Any increase to restriction was marginal but I was now approaching something I could consider a MTL vape.

There was an increase to the sweetness level of the flavour profile which was previously lacking.

As before the inhale was generally quiet with little turbulence and vapour production was very similar to that of cigarette smoke.

Tightest airflow setting

Now that was more like it!

Whereas I had a natural tendency to RDL vape on the previous two settings, this tightest of restriction simply would not allow it, aclear indication of moving into true MTL territory.

Starter Pen Kit 1.2ohm G series MTL coil pic 1

As a consequence, I was able to enjoy an extended inhale and get the full effect of the flavour from Cherry Fizzle. Much of which occurred towards the end of the exhale where both sweet and sour tones filtered through very nicely.

Yes indeedy doody! This was the exact experience I was looking for from a MTL vape. The restriction was spot on and so was the balance between flavour and vapour production. Impressive.

I got a whooping 18 hours continuous use from the battery, during which time I vaped roughly 6ml of e liquid. A highly impressive performance given that I was pumping maximum power to the coil at all times.

Keep in mind that once the LED indicator turns red there’s around one hour vaping time left before the battery gives up the ghost.

Geekvape G Series 1.8ohm Kanthal wire coil (7W – 9W)

This is probably one of the lowest wattage MTL coils I’ve reviewed here so it would be interesting to see how it performed. I used 88 Vape Original Tobacco pre loaded with freebase nicotine.

The liquid ratio was 50VG/50PG.

Starter Pen Kit 1.8ohm G series MTL coil

Using the widest airflow slot this was once again far too airy a vape and one I couldn’t consider to be MTL.

I found myself wanting to restrictive lung hit on the coil but there’s not really sufficient power for that.

However, while attempting to vape MTL there was still good flavour production. All the tobacco notes were there and as expected, cloud production was suitably stealthy.

I was also able to notice the subtle difference in power between this and the 1.2ohm G series coil.

Geekvape G18 Mid Airflow Restriction

On this occasion I could actually tell the difference between mid and wide airflow. The flavour did take on more of a concentrated nature while being a comfortable restriction for a MTL vape.

It retained the quiet nature of the inhale with just a minimum level of turbulence.

Tightest Airflow Setting

There it was again!

The perfect MTL vape, in my opinion. The restriction was spot on and for such a low powered coil so was the flavour and cloud production.

Starter Pen Kit 1.8ohm G series MTL coil pic 2

Admittedly, it’s best to forget about any warmth being generated so the vape will be cool. If it works this well with tobacco blends it will totally harmonise with fruits and menthol based profiles.

As an added bonus I picked out a slight throat hit from the freebase nicotine which really helped to replicate the draw from a cigarette.

The battery held up for an amazing 20 hours continuous use on the highest power setting. During this time I vaped around 5ml juice.

Pros

  • Incredibly lightweight and pocket friendly
  • Easy to use, convenient top fill system
  • Clear PCTG tank much less prone to damage than glass
  • Amazing battery life
  • Bright LED – easy to read in direct sunlight
  • Leak free coils

Cons

  • Unable to charge while in a vertical position
  • Two of the airflow slots give an airy MTL vape (subjective)
  • Dual fill ports are on the small side
  • Green LED remains solid even once fully charged
  • Type C USB charging isn’t that fast

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit – Final Review Verdict

I didn’t notice any sign of the flavour diminishing as the battery life waned. That’s a sign of constant voltage regulation – it works just fine.

There’s very little weight to the device which is great but it made me question its ability to withstand a few hard knocks. It does seem to have a fragile quality to it.

The bright LED worked fantastically well in direct sunlight. The fire button responded well to the button bashing needed to step up or down the power levels.

When charging, the battery will initially pulse red, blue when mid charged and finally remain a solid green when completed.

It’s annoying that the green LED refuses to turn off after the device is fully charged. In doing so I would have known that the battery was ready for use.

The coils don’t leak but you may encounter a few drops of condensation inside the deck. Something to be expected in all honesty.

Geekvape G18 Starter Pen Kit – Who’s It Suited To?

I’ve heard all the whinging about Pod Kits saturating the market – and there’s no disputing that fact.

Geekvape has done good in releasing this no nonsense starter pen kit. It certainly takes me back a few years to when they too were overloading the vape scene.

Yet I don’t recall folk moaning about them. When looking at the Geekvape G18 Starter Pen kit it’s clear to see why.

It’s the perfect jumping on point for the new vaper. No daunting screen display showing wattage, voltage, resistance, etc that in all honesty the new vaper isn’t interested in.

The fire button doubles up to provide all the power available from the coils in an easy and straight forward manner.

The flavour and cloud production is more than adequate for a newbie and the battery will last for days on end.

If you’re new to the vape scene I would wholeheartedly recommend this vape pen. It won’t disappoint.

..I’m still not sure how to pronounce malachite though lol!

The Smok N18 Kit was part of a double release featuring the N18 and R22 Vape pens.

This review is only for the N18 Kit.

Smok N18 Main Image

There has been many different types of device released in the “Stick” range from the G15 pod kit, the Stick 80W, Stick V9 Max and Stick AIO to name a few.

What Can We Expect From The Smok N18 Kit?

So this kit is part of the popular “Nord” series – I owned several of the original Nords and they were brilliant starter kits and surprisingly robust for an inexpensive Smok kit.

The Nord range are generally tailored to new vapers – with ease of use as the main selling point.

n18 v r22

Here the N18 is no different with a really basic style vape pen packed with some good but simple to use features.

The output is adjustable from 9-30W in 5 increments by simply turning the base switch and you can adjust the airflow too!

n18 r22 charging

Inside the mod is a 1300mAh battery which is charged via a Type C USB port at up to a 0.75A charge rate.

There is a fire button for turning the device on and off and also to press to fire when vaping. The fire button has an LED indicator in the surround to display fault conditions and the battery charge status.

The tank section is removable and is compatible with 510 drip tips.

The N18 uses the “Nord” range of coils – and the 0.6ohm Mesh and 1.4ohm Regular coils are included in the kit.

Other Nord coils are also compatible.

There are 7 colour options to choose from: Matte Black, Matte Red, Matte Blue, Matte Gold, Stainless Steel, Matte Green and 7-colour.

Smok N18 Kit Design and Build Quality

I received the Smok N18 Kit in the 7-Colour version.

It is also worth noting as this is a review sample this has the 3ml tank capacity.

n18 with biro

In TPD Regulated areas this is reduced to 2ml in order to comply.

Smok N18 Mod

The body is a satin finish Stainless Steel and manages to combine feeling hard wearing with being incredibly light.

The output switch on the base turns easily with little indents on each setting.

smok stick n18 pattern

A window in the side of the dial shows the power level you have selected – it is tiny writing though and can be slightly difficult to see.

N18 power level

On the bottom of the mod are the required legal logos and what appear to be 2 venting holes.

n18 bottom view

From the base moving up the device you have a lovely rainbow effect with a patterned finish.

I can feel the pattern texture when scraping my nail against it but it doesn’t seem to scratch or lift off so must be a kind of etching into the metal?

On the front of the base is the “Stick N18” logo and the “Smok” logo on the rear.

stick n18 branding

Towards the top of the mod is the fire button which is a plastic feel material in black and the centre contains the indicator LED which is nice and bright.

Sometimes I did find the fire button wasn’t responsive to multiple presses – was fine with a double press for the battery status but the 5 clicks on / off didn’t always register so I found I would generally do more than the 5 presses to make sure.

On the rear of the mod is the USB Type C port which is a bit high for when charging – you can stand it up but it is a bit top heavy and will topple at the slightest knock.N18 rear view

The airflow control is actually part of the mod and it turns freely without being too lose, however it doesn’t have any stops at minimum or maximum. Not a huge deal as you can just keep turning until the 4 airflow holes appear again.airflow

This does mean that you cannot use any other tanks on the mod as there is no 510 connection. A spring mounted connector pin stands up in the centre to make connection with the coil base.

Smok N18 Tank Section

This is only suitable for use with the supplied mod as it does not have a 510 connection.

tank section

You can use other 510 drip tips on here but there is a raised lip which looks a bit odd with a different tip but I found my 510 tips fitted snugly.

The supplied drip tip is a black plastic type which for MTL vaping feels just perfect.

For filling you unscrew the tank top – the threads feel secure but a bit squeaky. It does take quite a few turns to unscrew fully.

top cap removed
Please note I removed some of the fill port gasket for this photo!

With the cap removed you are faced with 2 fill ports with rubber gaskets across. These gaskets have slots in them but they are a bit hard to see.

Although the ports are long they are only around 2mm wide – so I did find the nozzle of my bottles took a bit of shoving through them as they don’t feel wide enough. In fact I couldn’t get the gasket to open properly with my 10ml bottles which resulted in the top of the tank being covered in e-liquid.

I ended up having to rip the gasket off – it is so hard to fill with these in place! I ended up covered in e-liquid every time!
There is a nice clear circular window to check your e-liquid level and this is surrounded by the metal of the tank section.

This kind of construction has its pros and cons – it is less likely to get broken as the metal will protect the window – however if you do break the window you cannot replace it and the tank will be scrap.

tank window

The base of the tank is where you install the push in / pull out Nord coil and unlike the Nord pod kits it doesn’t matter how you align the coil – there are no locating cut outs like on the pods so just make sure to push it in firmly.

I did find I had to push down on the tank slightly when screwing it onto the mod as the spring connection pin on the mod had to also be pushed down for the tank threads to engage.

Smok N18 Quick Start Guide

The kit arrives without any coils installed – so you will need to install a coil, fill and charge to get up and running.

Do not fear I tell you how in the section below!

Basic Operation

  • Turn On / Off = press the fire button 5 times quickly.
  • Vaping = hold the fire button down whilst inhaling on the mouthpiece.
  • Airflow adjustment = Turn the airflow control ring to suit your preference.
  • Output adjustment = There are 5 output levels to choose from – 9, 15, 20, 25 or 30W. Turn the dial on the base until the required output level is shown in the display window on the dial.
  • Battery Charge Remaining = the LED indicator in the centre of the fire button will change colour according to the charge remaining in the battery. 70% or above = Green light, 30-70% = Orange light and less than 30% = Red light. The LED will display white when vaping so for a quick check press the fire button twice quickly.

Smok N18 Protections

  • Low battery – the White LED will flash 15 times and the device will not operate until it has been charged.
  • Short circuit – the LED will flash 5 times and be White. Check connections and if fault still occurs replace coil.
  • No Atomiser – the LED will flash White 4 times – install the correct tank or check for poor connection.
  • Resistance limits – If the coil resistance is below 0.5ohms or above 3ohms the LED will flash 4 times in White. Install a coil within the correct resistance limits.
  • Over time – there is an 8 second cut off for the fire operation – this is to prevent overheating or accidental coil damage. The LED will be White and flash 5 times and the fire will cut out.

How To Charge The Smok N18 Battery

  • Using the included USB C cable connect the small end into the USB port on the mod.n18 charging
  • Connect the large end of the cable into a suitable USB outlet.
  • The LED will light up and flash regularly when the USB cable is connected and cycle through the red, orange and green indicators. The LED will turn off when charging is complete.

For my first full charge I used a 2.4A charging plug – after 1 hour 30 mins this was still not showing as charged and had got quite warm.

As the max charge rate is 0.75A for my second try I used a 1A charging plug and it took 2 hours to fully charge – which is quite a long charging time considering it has USB type C charging.

How To Fill the Smok N18

  • Unscrew the tank top cap.
  • Insert the e-liquid bottle nozzle into the fill port.
  • Add e-liquid whilst watching the level through the clear section of the tank.
  • Replace the tank top cap.
  • If this is the first use or a new coil leave the device to stand for 10-15 minutes for the coil wicking to absorb the e-liquid. Also before pressing the fire button do a couple of inhales on the mouthpiece. This is called Priming and will help prevent coil damage.

How To Replace the Coil

  • Remove the tank section by unscrewing it from the mod.
  • Turn the tank upside down and unscrew the tank base section.
  • Pull the coil from the tank – note if you do not turn the tank upside down it will leak when you remove the coil!
  • Push a new coil into the tank making sure it aligns correctly.
  • Install the tank onto the mod by slightly pushing the tank down to overcome the spring pressure of the connection whilst turning to catch the screw threads in the mod.
  • Fill the tank as described above and before using the fire button take a couple of inhales on the mouthpiece to just pull the liquid through into the coil.

How Does the Smok N18 Kit Perform?

As this device caters to Mouth To Lung (MTL) with the 1.4ohm coil and Direct To Lung (DTL) with the 0.6ohm coil I will use different e-liquids with them both.

n18 tank with coils

Smok recommend 70%VG / 30%PG e-liquid for this kit – I will also be trying 50/50 Nic salt and 80%VG e-liquid to see how it gets on.

Nord Meshed 0.6ohm Coil (25W Recommended)

64%VG E-liquid

Firstly I tried this coil with the delicious 64%VG Choppa Collection Blue Slush e-liquid.

As this is a mesh coil I did start a lot lower than the 25W recommended – just in case I got the hellish mesh Dry Hit – so I could work up gradually to 25W.

Even at 15W the vapour and flavour is really surprising.

At 20W things heat up a bit and a nice little crackle can be heard. Unfortunately the e-liquid I chose does have a cooling sensation so it is hard to judge how warm the vape is – but it is still warmer than in the 15W setting. The cloud size has also increased.

At 25W this is more like it, not as powerful as a big cloud chucking sub ohm tank by any means but this is a lot lower power and higher resistance. There is a lovely lung full of vapour which is not harsh in any way.

I do find there is little throat hit with this coil but higher VG e-liquids are not designed for that anyway. If you want throat hit choose the 1.4ohm coil with some 50/50 and high Nic e-liquid.

A really enjoyable vape at 25W, a lovely tongue-full of flavour, plenty of vapour and it just feels super smooth.

I did try a couple of vapes at 30W and the flavour wasn’t a massive improvement and you could just feel things were starting to get a bit dry and the hellish dry hit could be on the horizon – so I quit whilst I was ahead and went back to 25W!

80%VG E-liquid

As I had some 80%VG Stika Bombz Fruit Salad e-liquid kicking around I thought I would give that a bash too to check the coil could still wick thicker VG e-liquid.

I have used this coil with 80%VG in the past on the original Nord kit – and it performed fine. However in the N18 kit it was quite a dry vape at 25W.

The flavour was OK but it was so close to being a dry hit at times it felt quite uncomfortable.

So my recommendation is 70%VG is the maximum VG I would go for in this kit – it performed well with that ratio but felt like it was struggling with 80%.

Nord Regular 1.4ohm Coil (12W Recommended)

50/50 Nic Salt Liquid

For this coil I used my usual 50/50 VG/PG CrazySaltzzz Bubblegum Nicotine Salt.

I am used to this coil as I used it for a long time in the Original Nord and the Trinity Alpha kits when I was just quitting smoking on 20mg Nic salts and found it to be a great performer. Those kits were only slightly let down by the airflow being a tad too loose for a true MTL vape.

I started at the lowest setting – 9W – and even at this level there is a lot more flavour than I was expecting.

As there isn’t a 12W setting (this seems weird when that is the recommended power for the coil) I had to move up to 15W.

At this setting the flavour is how I remember from the earlier kits with the bonus of having a more restricted airflow setting.

I have moved on from the Nord range and the flavour is slightly lower than I am used to with the same e-liquid in a Uwell Caliburn or Innokin Sceptre kit – but as a starter pen this really does the trick.

It appears I do take longer vapes as the throat hit isn’t quite as strong as I am used to – so to get a good throat hit you would probably need to increase the nic strength.

I didn’t want to go up to the 20W setting with the coil recommendation being 12W but I gave it a bash and it did start to feel like a dry vape with no increase in heat or flavour so I went back down to 15W.

My conclusion is this coil performs better in this kit having the adjustable airflow – but is slightly lower on flavour and throat hit than some more modern pod coils.

64%VG E-liquid

I decided to chuck some of the Choppa Collection Blue Slush e-liquid into here to see if it could cope with higher VG. As I haven’t added any nic shots to this the VG is 64% and the PG is 36%.

I am happy to report no wicking issues at all – so this coil is happy with slightly thicker e-liquid. It would be pushing my luck to expect it to handle 80%VG so I will save that for the 0.6ohm coil!

Smok N18 Airflow

With the regular 1.4ohm coil – the airflow can be completely closed to pretty much nothing.

With all 4 air inlets uncovered this is still a restricted draw – much tighter than using this coil on the original Nord Pod Kit.

For me my ideal setting was with 2 holes uncovered – leaving plenty of movement for going tighter or looser airflow.

With the 0.6ohm coil again you can fully close off the airflow which is great and with the 4 holes open this is a lot more open than the 1.4ohm coil but still a slight restriction. On a 1-10 scale of 1=fully closed – 10=breathing fresh air – this coil in fully open setting is around 8 so only a slight restriction which also may be down to the 510 slim drip tip too.

Smok N18 Mod Performance

I have no complaints about the mod performance at all.

It did everything I asked of it, the firing speed is quick, the LED is easy to see and the output adjustment works well.

The only slight issue is the fire button not responding every press when doing the multiple presses for on and off, so you might start subconsciously adjusting to this and doing 7 or 8 clicks in a row to just make sure.

The build quality and finish are still pristine despite several drops – and the tank viewing window has so far survived these too!

It charged fine – although slowly, no USB port issues, the battery life was as expected and it has been an all round great performer.

Smok N18 Kit Battery Life

Using the 1.4ohm coil at 15W I got around 9.5 hours of vaping. For the last hour of vaping the output seemed to be less powerful – I might have been imagining it as there was no spitting or flooding but it seemed to lack Ooomph.

Using the 0.6ohm coil at 25W I got around 5 hours of vaping. Again when the red battery indicator light was showing it did feel like the output had dropped.

Of course it should be noted that everyone’s vaping habits vary – even the nicotine levels will dictate how often you vape so these figures are just a rough guide.

Pros

  • Does look classy and the Stainless Steel body is light but feels like it is hardwearing.
  • Having the airflow adjustment really improves the coil performance
  • LED indicator shows battery charge remaining, some of the earlier Smok Stick kits did not have this.
  • Adjustable power output makes this kit more versatile to allow you to experiment with different compatible coils
  • Really easy to use for a new vaper (Apart from filling!)
  • E-liquid viewing window is clear and well placed and should be less likely to get broken.
  • No leaks or malfunctions – this just works
  • Uses original Nord coils which always work well and are readily available

Cons

  • Fill port gaskets are a nightmare – even with 10ml bottles – I ended up ripping mine out!
  • Fire button wasn’t always responsive to the 5 clicks for on / off
  • The Nord coil performance does feel a bit underwhelming and outdated as coil technology has moved on significantly – but they are decent.
  • Only 9 and 15W lower power settings when the 1.4ohm coil is supposed to be at 12W?
  • The tank and battery are not compatible with other devices as there is no 510 connector
  • If you do break the viewing window the tank is sadly scrap.
  • When installing the tank section onto the mod you do have to also push down to overcome the spring on the connector before the tank threads will engage.
  • Although it has USB Type C charging it has a low 0.75A charge rate which took 2 hours.

Final Review Verdict

The main problem I found with this kit was the fill port gaskets. I got that peed off with them I ripped them off!

So my advice is to use some kind of prong and pull them out as once you have done this the kit is mega simple to use.

I had a slight issue with the fire button when it came to the 5x presses for turning on and off, but otherwise it was responsive.

Apart from these slight niggles which did sadly lower some of the review scores this has been a solid kit, feels really well made and apart from the filling is super easy to use.

The Nord coils are always decent performers, they do feel slightly dated after I have experienced the Innokin Sceptre, Lost Vape UB Lite and Vapefly Galaxies 30W coils which are super flavour monsters in comparison. The vape experience is slightly underwhelming compared to more modern kits.

One of my first pod kits was the original Nord and I used 2 of these on and off for several years and they just kept working! I do feel this little SMOK N18 is created with a similar pedigree and should give a great service life.

It is not the most modern or original vape kit on the market – but it does the job it has been designed for and it does it satisfactorily. Also the fact the Nord coils are so widely available means you should be able to pop into most vape shops and get supplies for this.

I experienced no leaks at all and no malfunctions so again this kit I have right here has been reliable and I wouldn’t hesitate taking it out and about as my only device.

It has dropped marks in the “Replace if lost or damaged” category as I have much better pod kits which bang out the flavour – I would only really pick up the N18 if they were broken or charging.

It would be a great starter kit for someone – but there are better out there.

The Kizoku Oaker MTL pen kit review and I must confess to being totally new to this Japanese based vape manufacturer but not necessarily surprising given that they’re relatively new to the scene having arrived in 2018.

To begin with it looked like they were going down the accessory route after releasing a magnetized atomizer stand but somehow attention was quickly diverted to vaping devices themselves. More specifically, MTL vaping products.

Kizoku Oaker hand check 1

The Kizoku Techmod, a side by side mod arrived followed by two tanks, the Limit (22mm) and the Unlimit (24mm).

In both cases stock mesh coils were available but also with the option of an RBA section for the budding builder.

Indeed it seems the manufacturer has been pushing MTL tanks over their first few years in the industry. No bad thing at all, especially for the newer vapers out there.

The Kizoku Oaker marks the first venture into pen style vaping kits. The included 18mm Shima MTL tank carries the same hall marks as their other tanks in that it too has an RBA section.

What Can We Expect From the Kizoku Oaker MTL Pen Kit?

First and foremost there’s a degree of versatility.

I say this because it only looks like there are two stock coil currently available for the Shima MTL tank, both of which are compatible with the 22mm Limit tank.

Kizoku Oaker Boxed

However, it does appear that Aspire Nautilus coils are compatible. Cool beans!

The option of a rebuildable deck is an interesting on, effectively turning this pen style device into a mini RTA. More on this feature later.

The Kizoku Oaker offers a high degree of portability thanks to the compact design and the built in 1100mah battery supports fast type C charging which is always a plus. A spare 3.5ml bubble glass has been included as an alternative to the pre-installed 2ml TPD poly carbon version.

The device relies on three step voltage via the fire button with a power range of up to 25W. Don’t expect any bells and whistles with this simplistic MTL kit.

At first glance the Kizoku Oaker MTL kit certainly appears to be tailor made for the devout MTL user as well as those making the transition across from smoking. Expect it to land in the pockets of the more casual or infrequent vaper too.

How successful is it at emulating the draw from a cigarette though? It’s time we found out.

Inside the Box

I’m not quite sure how intentional it is but the Kizoku Oaker MTL kit arrived in an aluminium casing that takes its reference from old school tobacco tins. Some of the more, shall we say, mature readers will know exactly what I mean.

I even sniffed the tin for the aroma of a once preferred blend! Sad isn’t it lol.

As far as presentation goes, Kizoku have already won me over. I like how everything sits neat and tidy inside the foam recesses.
Kizoku Oaker unboxing

  • Oaker 19mm battery
  • Shima 18mm MTL tank
  • 1 x KCL1 0.7ohm mesh coil
  • Spare expansion glass tube
  • Tool bag (includes the rebuildable deck section)
  • Type C USB charging cable
  • User manual
  • Warranty card

The packing list on the sleeve is slightly confusing because there’s no mention of the charge cable and the rebuildable deck section was packed separately.

Kizoku Oaker MTL Kit – Features

It’s such a new product that I wasn’t even able to find any info regarding the device on the official Kizoku website. What I can say is that it’s available in three colour schemes. Stainless steel, Matte Black and Gunmetal so nothing garish going on here.

It seems there’s only one version available catering for both standard and TPD compliancy.

As mentioned the integrated Kizoku Oaker 1100mah battery relies on a three step voltage adjustment for altering power (voltage) levels to the coil via the fire button up to a maximum of 25W.

The tank is designed to offer a true MTL vape whether using the included stock coil or the rebuildable section. The Kizoku Shima tank utilises a top fill system and has adjustable bottom airflow.

Kizoku Oaker – Design and Build Quality

Battery – Kizoku Oaker

The battery is made from stainless steel 304 so it feels very solid in the hand.

The type C USB charging port is built into the side of the battery near the top so there shouldn’t be any issues with charging in a vertical position. Happy days!

Kizoku Oaker battery section showing USB port and manu logoThe fire button is incorporated into a flattened section of the tube and is very quiet when pressed.

It’s more of a muted click than the usual clicking noise. A single LED illuminator is situated beneath and when the device is powered up cycles through the three colours.

When powering the device off a single red LED appears then slowly fades away. Nice touch. It’s amazing how easily I’m pleased.. lol

How To Operate the Kizoku Oaker battery

  • Press the fire button five times to power the device on/off
  • Long press the fire button to vape
  • Press the fire button three times to cycle through the three step voltage. A red LED indicates 3V, blue steps the power up to 3.3V and Green indicates a maximum output of 3.7V

Giving the battery the once over, the 510 connector pin is indeed spring loaded and takes very little resistance to depress.

Kizoku Oaker spring loaded 510 pin
The 510 pin exhibits lots of spring like springiness..

While charging, the LED colour reflects the current voltage capability and when fully charged will shut off. The battery supports a maximum 1A current and has a host of safety features.

  • Open circuit. After firing the LED blinks three times
  • Short circuit. The LED will flash red three times
  • High temperature protection. The LED will also flash red three times
  • Over vape protection. The device will cease to function if vaped over 10 seconds
  • Low power. The LED will flash red for a period of ten seconds

It’s important to note that the battery will give no warning of when it’s running low.

The LED will continue to display the colour of its equivalent voltage output before blinking red for a period of ten seconds.

Shima MTL Tank

There are nine removable parts to this dinky 18mm MTL tank one of which is the airflow control ring which gives the option of pinhole or a single 10mm cycloptic adjustable airflow slot.

The stock coil screws into the deck in a clockwise manner and the threading in silky smooth, so is the threading of the inner chimney, fill port and top cap sections.

Kizoku Oaker Shima MTL tank

Even the threading on the poly carbon mouthpiece is meticulously designed. Double O rings ensure the drip tip sits snuggly in place. It can be replaced with one of your own.

To cap it off, the tank incorporates some rather excellent knurling that looks very pleasing aesthetically.

Kizoku Oaker individual parts of the MTL tank

The adjustable airflow slots alter in size as they’re selected, each one snapping into place while doing so. Very impressive in my opinion and should allow for some subtle, balanced MTL vaping options.

The fill port is comprised of two 6.5mm kidney shaped openings, able to cater to any kind of bottle tip. Again the machine quality is on point.

Some removable parts of the Kizoku Oaker Shima MTL tank

..I’m beginning to sound like a fan boy before even vaping it. Dangerous move, Neil. lol

How To Fill The Kizoku Shima MTL Tank

  • With the coil installed, unscrew the top cap counter clockwise
  • Locate one of the two kidney shaped fill ports and gently squeeze e-liquid into the tank taking care not to overfill
  • Replace the top cap ensuring a snug fit

Kizoku Oaker How to fill the tank

Leave the e-liquid to soak into the wicking ports for around five minutes prior to vaping.

How Does The Kizoku Oaker Perform?

Kizoku Oaker KCL1 0.7ohm mesh coil

As this is a MTL tank I opted for a 50VG/50PG juice ratio. I also avoided the use of aniseed, citrus or cinnamon inspired flavours because they’re known to cause cracks with poly carbon material.

So I used 88 vape Rolling Leaf, a tobacco E liquid profile with freebase nicotine content.

Kizoku KCL1 0.7ohm mesh coilWhen vaping with the adjustable pin hole slots fully open I got a very airy MTL experience and a very restrictive DL one too, although that’s not something I would recommend.

Flavour replication was OK but nothing special being slightly mute and diluted.

Pinhole airflow structure Kizoku Oaker Shima MTL tankClosing two of the airflow slots created a different vape altogether. I was still able to get an extended inhale but the tightness of the draw certainly emulated that of a cigarette.

Your classic MTL vape if you will and very satisfying. Cloud production was very discreet meaning no furrowed brows when out and about in public places.

So back to the flavour on this setting and the tobacco blends fused harmoniously, lingering in a pleasant way on the palate and with the power set to 3.7V (green) a nice warm vape was created. There was plenty of sweetness to keep things driving along.

I would say restrictions range from 20%, 30%, 70% and 90% depending on the choice of the four settings on offer.

Yes! I did write 90% there. That’s far too tight for any kind of vape to be honest and it didn’t work for me.

Kizoku Oaker – Cycloptic airflow setting

I’m hoping this will be more suited to the rebuildable section because there’s nothing worthwhile about vaping the cycloptic airflow wide open.

I got very little flavour attempting a MTL vape and there must’ve been a mere 10% restriction, tops. It’s just too airy a draw.

Cycloptic airflow structure of the Kizoku Oaker Shima MTL tank

That’s OK if the tank is rigged for a semi restrictive direct lung vape but it clearly isn’t because I tried – and the flavour and cloud production remains poor.

Shutting down the airflow to around mid way there was still too much airflow. I would hazard a guess in the region of 25% restriction this time and again creating another airy, uncomfortable MTL vape. The flavour was just too diluted for me to retain interest.

Under the tightest of restriction the cycloptic airflow provides a decent MTL vape but the flavour just isn’t that great, unfortunately.

MTL DIY Coil Deck (Mini RBA section)

Kizoku Shima DIY coil deck boxedThe Kizoku Shima DIY coil deck comes packaged separately and includes spare washers and a silicone seal for the MTL tank along with:

  • Single cotton aglet
  • 2 x replacement screws
  • Mini screwdriver
  • 2mm kanthal round wire MTL coil

Kizoku Shima DIY coil deck unboxed

This is a very small build deck. I’ve seen bigger ones used with pod kits so if you intend to build on the Shima DIY coil deck be prepared to take your time. Have patience. Like Me.

Ha!

Shima MTL Tank DIY Coil Deck – Installation

  • Kizoku Shima DIY coil deck close up picScrew the Shima DIY coil deck into the base of the tank
  • Loosen the post screws allowing enough clearance to insert the coil legs underneath
  • Shima DIY coil deck legs after installing into postsTighten the post screws down making sure the coil legs have been secured
  • Trim the coil legs back to the sides of the build deck. Make sure they are not protruding as this may cause a short against the inside of the removeable chimney
  • Shima DIY coil deck cutting legs to side of build deckCentre the coil over the single airflow intake and around 1-2mm clear of the deck
  • Pass the included cotton aglet through the coil. Take your time – it’s cut to size but don’t force the coil out of position or deform in any way
  • Shima DIY coil deck passing cotton through the coilTrim the cotton back to the sides of the DIY deck and gently thin out by raking with tweezers or an appropriate tool
  • Shima DIY coil deck cutting cotton to lengthThe cotton must be placed, not forced into the wicking ports so don’t stuff it in!
  • Shima DIY coil deck with cotton inserted into wicking portsScrew the DIY coil deck back onto the Kizoku Oaker battery section
  • Saturate E liquid across the cotton and coil
  • Shima DIY coil deck saturating cotton before further installationGently screw the chimney section back onto the deck of the tank
  • Shima DIY coil deck with chimney section attachedTest fire the coil to make sure no shorting occurs.
  • Shima DIY coil deck checking coil for shortingPlace the poly carbon/glass extension tube over the chimney section
  • Screw the fill port section onto the top of the chimney section, securing the poly carbon/glass extension tube into place
  • Shima DIY coil deck fitting fill port section over tankFill the tank with E-liquid through the fill port
  • Replace the top cap and drip tip

Allow the juice to soak into the cotton for around five minutes before adjusting airflow, power settings and finally vaping.

How Does The Shima DIY Coil Deck Perform?

As with the included stock coil I recommend using 50VG/50PG juice ratios when using the rebuildable deck because the included coil is a true MTL variant.

I discovered the 2mm kanthal round wire build had a resistance value of 1.0ohm. Set to the maximum power setting, 88 Vape Raspberry Ripple was used for testing purposes. With a freebase nicotine strength of 6mg for an additional throat hit.

Shima DIY Coil Deck – Slotted Airflow

There’s no doubt about the increased level of flavour when using the DIY deck. Even with minimum airflow restriction the raspberry was very clean, bright and popping. The MTL vape was quite airy but also comfortable.

However, altering restriction beyond half way created a much tighter draw than the KCL1 stock coil equivalent. The flavour was still impressive but vapour production fails significantly.

So the airflow options are less versatile, which is a bit of a shame.

Shima DIY Coil Deck – Cycloptic Airflow

With airflow wide open, the restrictive direct lung option makes a return. The flavour is somewhat compromised and as expected there’s little warmth from the maximum power output.

Unfortunately it’s a very poor MTL vape being far too airy. I was stuck between a rock and a hard place using this setting.

Shima DIY coil deck hand check pic
Using the glass extension and alternative 510 drip tips gives the Kizoku Oaker a completely different look!

A single reduction in airflow adjustment improves things but only marginally. Flavour quality isn’t improved much either. It’s OK just not that great.

It takes maximum airflow restriction to create what I would call the perfect MTL vape. I could quite happily vape this setting all day.

There’s plenty of satisfying vapour production and the raspberry ripple flavour is just spot on, creating the right intensity combined with a sweetness that lingers on the taste buds.

Pros

  • Excellent battery life and super fast type C USB charging
  • Good flavour from KCL1 mesh coil and slightly better from the DIY coil deck
  • No leaking from the KCL1 mesh coil or DIY coil deck
  • LED’s visible in direct sunlight
  • Exemplary build quality / excellent threading
  • Lightweight, slim and pocket friendly

Cons

  • Can be too airy or too tight for a decent MTL vape (subjective to airflow setting)
  • LED needs to be positioned lower on the battery. Obscured by thumb when vaping

Kizoku Oaker – Final Review Summary

I’ve got to admit I’m incredibly impressed by the build quality of the Shima MTL tank.

So many removeable parts yet all of which come together seamlessly thanks to excellent and reliable threading.

..It’s rare for me to give so few cons with a device.

Using the stock coil, the best MTL performance was found mid restriction while using the adjustable airflow slots.

The Shima DIY coil deck also provided an excellent MTL vape with the cycloptic airflow heavily restricted.

Generally speaking the best results were obtained when restricting airflow beyond 50% across either airflow design.

I think Kizoku have done a tremendous job with their first foray into pen style MTL devices. Although there’s not a great deal to separate them, the DIY coil deck edged it for flavour value. It just seemed a little cleaner and brighter.

Not to mention the satisfaction gained from wicking the DIY coil deck correctly! lol

The power regulation from the battery was also impressive. I was hard pressed to notice much degradation as the charge dropped.

Expect anything up to two days use from the Kizoku Oaker MTL kit especially when using medium power settings.

The stock coil lasted around two weeks before showing signs of wear and tear. Bearing in mind I was vaping quite heavily that’s none too shabby.

Kizoku Oaker MTL Kit – Recommendations

Who shouldn’t the kit be recommended to! It turns out to have great versatility thanks to the inclusion of the DIY coil deck.

It’s going to be ideal for those new to vaping with a simple screw in stock coil and such ease of use. The simplicity wins it points alone and that’s what any transitioning vaper will be looking for.

Of course the rebuildable deck will be of appeal to the intermediate / advanced vaper and all those on a tighter budget. It’s going to save on the pennies long term.

I honestly thought working on such a tiny deck was going to be the one blot on this vaping landscape but even I achieved success because of the simplistic design.

The Kizoku Oaker kit only produced the occasional condensate when using the wider cycloptic airflow. In two weeks of use I didn’t encounter any leaking from either the stock coil or DIY coil deck.

Overall a very reliable little device and one I could recommend to anyone that loves their MTL vapes.

Is this a vape kit you’d be interested in getting?

As the name suggests, the Apollo OHM GO V2 vape kit is a new version of a set-up I reviewed almost 2 years ago.

The question is – has there been drastic improvements given I really and mean really enjoyed the original?

Apollo OHM GO V2 Review

We shall of course find out in this vape review.

Apollo is a catchall vape company that ultimately specializes in some extremely tasty vape juice.

We’ve had the pleasure of reviewing many of Apollo’s e-liquid – to varying results – including the much loved Apollo SNCK range and the not so much liked FAQ line.

Along the way we’ve also reviewed Apollo’s hardware including the original Ohm Go kit, the Evolve and the cloud chucking monster, the VTube 5.0 and Phazer sub ohm tank.

What Can We Expect From the Apollo OHM GO V2?

Flavour – clouds and an easy but good switch from MTL to DTL vape styles is the quick answer.

It should be simple to use given the chip sets the wattage for you – an ideal kit for newcomers to vaping maybe…we shall see.

Apollo ohm go kit in hand
the original was HUGE!

I was impressed by the original version – reviewed 2 years ago – so I’m interested to see how this one fares.

Incidentally it’s available in the black I received or the stainless steel that I gave to my heavy smoking nephew…

OK, the Apollo OHM GO V2 vape kit was sent direct from the company – thank you – and as always my thoughts and opinions are my own and not swayed by freebies.

So is this new kit fit for the vaping gods?

Key Features

As vaping goes, the Apollo OHM GO V2 vape kit is about as basic as it gets.

I mean that as in using the device – I’ll talk more about the design in a wee while…because basic it ain’t.

I say basic as in the chip picks up the resistance of the coil and sets the wattage accordingly – no fiddling about it’s all done for you – ideal for absolute newbies or technophobes.

The choice of coils also means you can choose between a restricted vape – similar to a lit cigarette – or a much looser DTL vape and chuck a few clouds.

As to if the two coils pull this off with good flavour to boot we shall see.

That’s about it really, apart from the dead simple coil swap and refilling which I’ll touch on now.

Apollo OHM GO V2 – Quick Start Guide

filling vape kit

  • x5 clicks of the fire button for on and off
  • Fire button glows red whilst charging and turns off when charged
  • Prime your coil – drip tiny drops of e-liquid on exposed cotton
  • Unscrew Portal tank top counter-clockwise and fill 2/3rds to allow displacement
  • Screw back on and fire to vape and minimum 10 minutes to allow coil to prime
priming vape coil
prime the coil!

Design and Build Quality

It’s considerably shorter than the original vape kit and chunkier – no bad thing.

I’ve searched high and low for the original but probably gave it away to a smoker – so I’m relying on the original review.

Apollo OHM GO V2 design

It may be small but it feels like a hefty weight in the hand – down to the solid stainless steel construction I guess.

There’s also an apparently scratch resistant coating applied, and it feels kind of like a tough but thin veneer rather like a type of synthetic rubber, but metallic rather than spongy.

A shiny fingerprint magnet this certainly isn’t and it really does feel nice and grippy in the hand.

The Portal tank screws on and off the Apollo OHM GO V2 device nicely with no crunching and the airflow has a lovely resistance to it.

portal tank

I did have an issue with mine as the pre-installed coil was extremely bedded in and it took a few hard turns to get it out.

The fire button has a very nice throw to it and lights up green when fully powered – blue when there’s about half the power left and red when you really need to recharge.

Apollo OHM GO V2 green light

As I’ve said before, you can’t do much with the design of a pen styled kit – but the Apollo OHM GO V2 does look and feel good in the hand.

Bit over the top with logos – there’s x2 on the tank and one on the device…no biggie just me being fussy.

How Does the Apollo OHM GO V2 Vape Kit Perform?

Looking back at the review of the original vape kit, I’m surprised how much I gushed about it…

Surprised as in that was 2 years ago and back then I barely liked anything…call it my moody period lol.

New Device Old Coils?

So has the new Apollo OHM GO V2 got me just as gushy?

A little bit is the honest answer.

Time has moved on, and I guess if it ain’t broke don’t fix it – improve it is the motto here.

So has it improved?

In the looks department definitely – but what about the flavour off those two coils?

I’ve looked to see if they’ve been tweaked and I don’t know for sure if they have – and given the vape world has turned to mesh, these remain basic round wire.

Not an issue if they are packed with flavour, and I really did enjoy the vape 2 years ago.

But as I said – what was top range and a great performer based on all the other coils and tanks out there, might not be up to today’s standards.

As to if these coils have a place in today’s fast changing vape market – let’s see.

Note:

For the 0.5ohm DTL coil I used Ohm Boy Cranberry, Apple & Raspberry – 70/30 VG / PG e-liquid – bloody gorgeous stuff!

For the 1.0 ohm MTL coil I used the SuperGood Cocktail Peach Bellini nic salts – tasty stuff!

Apollo OHM GO V2 0.5 ohm Coil

I left the coil to sit soaking up the juice for a good ten minutes – it could have done with more as the first hit was a little under-cooked so to speak.

5 minutes later and the vape was surprisingly cold – I certainly didn’t remember the original being this cool.

The first fill and the flavour was so so – more OK than oh wow.

Two and a half fills and things perked up a bit – not a bad flavour at all.

I’ve had absolutely no issues with wicking a 70/30 PG/VG blend – decent clouds [not massive] and zero leaks.

Still scratching my head on why the vape is almost cold…not unpleasant…just odd for a sub ohm coil.

basic round wire stock coil
basic round wire

Apollo OHM GO V2 1.0 ohm Coil

Obviously this one wicked more quickly and the first hit was reasonable enough flavour wise – not bad clouds either.

And again, it took 2+ fills to get the flavour coming through.

Not a bad coil flavour wise – but again it’s a cold vape.

Apollo OHM GO V2 Airflow Control

Works a treat and wide open with the sub ohm coil and with 10 being extremely loose this is about an 8.5

I found halfway open gave me the best flavour though it is a little bit noisy and maybe a tad warmer – though still cooler than I might like.

As to the MTL coil, shut right down and you get a very nice restricted vape.

I found almost closed gave me the perfect tight draw, but again still very cool to vape on.

Pros

  • Dead simple to use
  • Choice of MTL and DTL coils
  • Tough and hard wearing
  • Compact
  • Nice design
  • Decent flavour
  • Decent clouds

Cons

  • Very cold vape
  • Pricey!

Final Review Verdict

For an old fart like me, going on about ‘keeping up with the times‘ might seem a bit rich.

However, whilst vape pens are still popular, they really don’t do much for me – hey come for me lol.

Two years ago I enthused over the original Apollo OHM GO and it really did deserve its place high on our Best Vape Pens list – for the time and place.

But two years on, and sadly it’s low mid-range in my books and way way way too expensive!

Now before you or Apollo goes off on one – this is purely my opinion on the vape kit in front of me and the state of the vape market today.

YES it is dead simple to use and ideal for making the switch from smoking to vaping.

YES it has decent flavour and throws a few clouds.

Does It Sit High In Today’s Vape Market?

Nope and IMHO, it’s nowhere near as flavoursome, nor is it value for money – though I guess it’s just as easy to use as a pod kit such as the Uwell Caliburn G or the outstanding Innokin EQ FLTR and those innovative soft tips.

Or come to that, faced with a choice I’d go for the Apollo BREZ pod kit against this one – every singe time. Now that pod kit absolutely rocks the flavour…decent price nowadays too!

OK, the coils and flavour remains the same – though that cold vape means I have now put it away – the only changes really are the design and the drop from a 1900mAH internal battery to a 1700mah…down to the shrinkage in size I guess.

So all those considerations taken on board – whilst it performs well, it’s just not for me…and I usually like old school vape stuff.

Saying that, a quick look at the Apollo website shows 86 almost all 5 star reviews…

Which again begs the question…

What do I know!

So…

Are you using the Apollo OHM GO V2?

If so how are you finding it?

Is your vape off this one on the cold side?

Am I talking out of my ample ass as usual?

Let me know in the comments below 🙂

They say, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it…improve it…and that’s certainly the case with the ePuffer TITAN X vape pen kit.

I reviewed the original ePuffer Titan last January and was pretty impressed – good build – good flavour and as pen kits go, a contemporary design.

epuffer titan x review

As to how ePuffer has improved the new version will shall see.

OK, ePuffer is a UK based vape manufacturer and began with the back in the day impressive Epuffer Magnum Snaps – a funky little cig-a-lite…ah the memories lol.

Since then the company has released the EPuffer Xpod Mini which Harley really liked, as well as the XPod kit, a pod kit that site admin Jonny really enjoyed.

Epuffer has released many other products, including cigars which I really like the look of – but the three vape kits I’ve mentioned are the only ones we’ve reviewed.

What Can We Expect From the New ePuffer Titan X?

The ePuffer Titan X vape kit is a pen style and the company describes it as a ‘hybrid‘.

In simple terms that means it can switch from a mouth to lung vape to sub ohm by swapping out the coils – as to if that works, we shall see.

epuffer titan x coils

It has a built in battery with fast charging, the tank is a top fill and there’s dual airflow.

So with all that in mind, I’m hoping for good flavour and clouds, coil and battery longevity and of course how it switches between vaping styles.

Epuffer told me the improvements made came from customer feedback [great to see] and upgrades to the original include:

  • 1. Added a USB Type-C connection – The battery is now charging in less
    than 1 hour.
  • 2. Updated software to provide a better support for 0.4 DTL coil.
  • 3. Improved 1.0ohm and 0.4ohm coils (more vapour, better flavour).
  • 4. Modified a mouthpiece and installed a non removable rubber gasket.
  • 5. The logo on power button is now imprinted from inside, so it will not
    fade over time.

The Titan X was sent to me direct from the company for the purpose of this review – thank you – and always my thoughts and opinions are not swayed by freebies…

Right, let’s see if I’m over the moon vaping on this one, and if it is indeed, a Titan among vapes…

Inside the Box

epuffer titan x box

A sturdy plastic box and inside you’ll find:

  • A rechargeable battery with a capacity of 1500 mAh
  • TITAN X Glass Tank liquimizer
  • An atomizer coil with an electric resistance of 1.0 ohm
  • An atomizer coil with an electric resistance of 0.4 ohm
  • A micro USB charging cable
  • An easy-to-follow user guide

epuffer titan x contents

  • Tank Capacity: 2ML ( Glass ) TPD Ready
  • Material: High Grade Triple Polished Stainless Steel
  • Power: 50 Watts – Inteli Sense Micro Controller
  • Ø=19mm Length: 130mm
  • Weight: 95g

Key Features

Without stating the obvious, this is a pen style vape kit that can switch from MTL to DTL vaping, thanks to the 2 types of coil available.

It has a 1500 mAH internal battery – with Type C fast charging – and can kick out a max of 50w. There’s no screen or up and down buttons to change wattage, instead the Inteli Sense Micro Controller within the chip checks the coil and sets the wattage accordingly.

The top fill tank is a TPD friendly 2ml capacity, is made from glass [covered by a protective frame] and part of the upgrade is a stainless steel mesh splash guard meant to stop spit-back.

There’s a dual cyclops airflow on the bottom of the tank, with a wide open slot rather than any honeycomb or holes that reduce in size.

So, it all looks good on paper, we’ll see in a moment how the Epuffer TITAN X vapes.

Design and Build Quality

Apart from the glass tank, the rest of the TITAN X vape kit is made from polished stainless steel.

They say polished, up close it has a kind of minimalist brushed stainless steel look about it, so it’s not shiny to the point of being a blingy fingerprint magnet – that’s a good thing!

epuffer titan x hybrid vape pen kit

The drip tip can’t be removed – I have tried so it might be my weak wrists – and is rather elongated but comfortable enough.

The moving parts are in general OK, the top cap screws off nicely [the fill ports are a little small] with nice threads, and it’s the same with the threads on the coil and tank to battery.

afc

One bugbear is the airflow control – once screwed onto the mod it’s a bugger to move and you do end up unscrewing the tank, as I have a number of times. Even now and fully lubed up with vape juice, it’s stiffer than my joints after a 10 mile hike…that’s really stiff BTW 😉

Overall it is very well made and design wise does look on the badass side of good.

So all good so far, let’s see how it performs.

Epuffer TITAN X Quick Start Guide

  • x5 clicks of the fire button on and off
  • Unscrew base of tank to swap coils
  • Unscrew top cap to fill

epuffer titan x how to fill

Dead simple or what!

How Does the Epuffer TITAN X Perform?

Given the kit can switch between MTL and DTL, I’ll break it down into the two coils.

For the MTL coil I used SuperGood Cocktail Selection nic salt Peach Bellini – bloody lovely stuff.

And for the DTL I used the last of my very tasty Jungle Juice Red Lagoon – a 70/30% VG/PG mix.

1.0 ohm Coil

I obviously used the nic salt on this one…me being Captain Obvious again…

The fill ports were just about wide enough to fit the nozzle – the same can’t be said for bigger shortfill bottles.

titan-x-atomizer-coil-1-ohm.jpg

OK after priming the coil, I let it sit for a good 10 minutes. For newbies, priming is extremely important on stock coils as it allows the vape juice to completely soak the cotton, so avoiding dry hits and ruining your coil – see the link for more info.

OK first vape, and it was impressive.

I had the airflow half open and got a very nice semi-restricted vape. On a scale of 1:10 with 10 being the airiest it was about a 6. Obviously closed right off and this is one hell of a tight MTL vape.

Flavour was good too at around a 7.5 and up to an 8 once the coil had broken in and got a couple of re-fills – not bad clouds either if that’s your thing.

The coil wicked well and no leaks whatsoever – even left on its side over night.

vape coils

0.4 ohm Coil

This coil is designed for sub ohm vaping and hopefully chucking clouds.

Wide open and this was a very airy vape right up there at a 9+ – a bit to airy for me and like do like my vapes on the looser side.

0.4 ohm coil

Again and with the airflow half closed, the vape was spot on with the tiniest bit of restriction, however the vapour wasn’t anything to write home about.

Yes there’s clouds, but if that’s what you’re into this is no cloud chucker.

Flavour wise, I know this vape juice very well, it was OK and on the good side of the scale…not amazing, but certainly tasty.

Again the coil wicked well, even after chain vaping, and again there was no leakage left overnight.

Pros

  • Well built
  • Contemporary design
  • x2 styles of vaping
  • Dead simple to use
  • Good flavour
  • Fast charging
  • Great battery life

Cons

  • A little noisy
  • Airflow control ring very stiff

Final Review Verdict

Vape pen kits are still very much in vogue and the Epuffer TITAN X style wise certainly looks the part.

It’s chunky and rugged, feels weighty in the hand, and is solidly built.

There’s no doubt the chip makes it dead simple for the absolute beginner to vaping, whilst the choice of coils will enable the vaping style to grow.

Not that many vape kits can pull off a proper MTL and DTL experience simply by switching out the coil, but the new kit certainly achieves this and does it very well too.

It is a little on the noisy side and a cloud chucker this ain’t even with the extra wrap on the sub ohm coil, but that isn’t my thing so no biggie.

I’m all about the flavour, and with both coils the TITAN X is definitely in the better than good range.

So…is this a vape kit you’ve bought and been using or planning to buy?

Let me know your thoughts and opinions in the comment below…we don’t bite…well, maybe sometimes ha!

BTW…do checkout the website, at the time of writing if you buy the ePuffer Titan X there’s a FREE e-liquid offer…

The Smok Vape Pen V2 takes me back to the original vape pen that was quite a popular device.

Like the rest, it’s a simple, easy to use pen styled mod and tank with a seamless look and fairly decent battery capacity.

Smok Vape Pen V2 review

Of course since those days, Smok has gone wild with mods and tanks, but its pen-style range continued to evolve.

To name a few, the Stick Prince, Stick M17, Stick X8, Stick AIO, Stick V8 (and V8 Baby) and the Vape Pen 22.

So the Smok Vape Pen V2 comes from a long breed of Smok pen style systems.

As a ‘never tried‘ Smok Pen user – I want to know what all the fuss is about.

So let’s crack on with the review and see what this kit is all about.

What Can We Expect From the Smok Vape Pen V2?

The Smok Vape Pen V2 contains a 1600mAh battery, Micro USB Port for charging and what you could basically call a generic version of any of the TFV tanks that Smok has released.

Smok Vape Pen V2 contents

But unlike the usual tank and mod combo kits, the Smok Vape Pen V2 does not have the usual 510 connection up top to connect the tank to the mod.

The tank itself can hold 3ml of e-liquid (2ml TPD) and comes with 2 0.15Ω Mesh Coils.

This kit was sent to me free of charge for the purpose of review.

All views and opinions are solely those of my own and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of others.

Design and Build Quality

The 22mm Diameter Tube style kit by Smok is made of a materials I cannot confirm.

My guess is aluminium alloy, or perhaps zinc alloy.

Smok Vape Pen V2 colours

Nonetheless this is a very simply styled device.

Smok Vape Pen V2 reviewed

I received the Gold colour variant of the Smok Vape Pen V2, and even thought I’m not a big fan of gold kits, I really can’t fault the build quality and finish of this kit.

On the face of the device is a large round, slightly spongy fire button and just above that are 3 small LED indicators to display battery life.

Smok Vape Pen V2 fire button

On the other side is the Micro USB Port for charging the device.

Smok Vape Pen V2 – the Tank

The tank itself is not removable as such.

In simple terms, the base of the tank is built into the device itself meaning there is no 510 connection so you wont be able to make use of the 1600mAh battery with another tank.

how to fill the Smok Vape Pen V2

Up top is a non-removable drip tip that I would almost put down as a slim-line 810 style drip tip, but it is also screwed into the top of the tank which needs to be unscrewed, in order to fill the tank.

The coil screws into the device from the top with the top-section then screwing down onto the coil which then makes the glass seal in position.

Smok Vape Pen V2 base

At the top of the device, or base of the tank – whichever way you like it, is a nice airflow adjustment ring which has a stopper so it does not spin freely.

Smok Vape Pen V2 In the Hand

The Smok Vape Pen V2 is really no bother to hold and carry.

Being only 22mm in diameter and 117mm in height, its very lightweight and nice in the hand.

Smok Vape Pen V2 in hand

The fire button is also very nicely placed for a very comfortable thumb fire but when using as a finger firer, I find it a little uncomfortable.

How To Fill the Smok Vape Pen V2

Here’s how to fill the Smok Vape Pen V2 with e-liquid:

  • Unscrew the drip tip Anti-Clockwise
  • Fill with your desired e-liquid
  • Re-fit the drip-tip cap clockwise
  • Allow the e-liquid to saturate the coil for around 5-10minutes

fill vape tankSmok Vape Pen V2 Functions

There really isn’t much to learn when operating this piece of machinery.

Here’s all you need:

  • 5 Clicks of Fire Button – Device On/Off
  • 2 Clicks of Fire Button – Check Battery Life

How Does the Smok Vape Pen V2 Perform?

I was using a high VG (80VG-20PG) variant of Code Red by Darkstar to really give these coils a bit of work to do.

Smok Vape Pen V2 – Flavour and Clouds

The Smok Vape Pen V2 has no option to adjust the wattage, So I gather there is some magic in this device which will automatically adjust the wattage to the recommended, depending on which coil is installed.

vape pen

However because only 2 of the same coils are included in the kit, I’m unable to test this logic.

Smok Vape Pen V2 – the 0.15Ω Meshed Coil (30-50w)

Regardless of where you set the airflow, I’ve been impressed with the flavour from these coils.

For me, they work better with fruits than they do with desert style e-liquids.

coils

They just seem better at bringing out the sweeter, tropical flavours in comparison to the custards and the cakes.

The Smok Vape Pen V2 is a fairly cool vape until you close the airflow down below half open, at which point you can enjoy a slightly warm vape, but there are some drawbacks to restricting the airflow that much…. See below…

Smok Vape Pen V2 Airflow

I’m going to have to break this category into two, the first is how the restriction changes, the second is how the noise changes!

With regards to restriction – When wide open, the Smok Vape Pen V2 offers a very loose Direct-Lung Vape in typical Smok style, however, it’s not TOO much, it’s just very loose.

airflowKnocking that airflow half way – there is a slight restriction which is very comfortable and maybe a little increase in flavour.

Knocking down again to quarter open – a nice restrictive direct lung vape.

Now, onto the noise…In simple terms…

  • All the way open – fairly quiet, nice and smooth.
  • Half way open – slightly noisy, and almost feels a little rough with regards to its smoothness.
  • Quarter open – still just slightly noisy, but also a little whistle and still rough with regards to smoothness.

Smok Vape Pen V2 AirflowBattery Life

Considering the 2 main factors… A 1600mAh battery, and the 0.15Ω coils included.

The Smok Vape Pen V2 does a fairly good job.

micro usb

Day to day, I’ve enjoyed an average of around 8 hours battery life but to be honest, I feel with these coils in particular the Vape Pen V2 doesn’t last long enough.

There are a few other coils available however, a 0.6Ω, 0.3Ω and a 0.25Ω which will all probably do a better job of preserving battery life.

Charging the device, is fairly slow. I’ve found its taken over an hour to charge

This device could really do with a 2A USB Type C Charge port allowing for a fast charge.

Pros

  • Decent flavour
  • Simple and easy to use
  • Good build quality

Cons

  • Small tank capacity
  • A little noisy
  • Battery life not the best
  • Charges fairly slowly
  • No Wattage Adjustment

Final Review Verdict

As much as the Smok Vape Pen V2 dishes out good flavour, I’m a little disappointed.

Now maybe I’m asking too much, maybe its simplicity and minimal features are what people want?

vape review

But I just feel the device is a little outdated with a Micro USB Port and no wattage adjustment. The tank also has a low e-liquid capacity and is a little ‘Old Skool‘ to fill.

But again, if its convenience, portability and simplicity you desire, the Smoke Vape Pen V2 does a good job of ticking those boxes.

So if you’re not to fussed about the other stuff then the Smok Vape Pen V2 may be an option.

Just don’t expect to be able to tailor your vape to exactly how you like it. You get what you’re given and that’s that.

Does this device deliver the flavour, vapour and general experience I require, in order to be enjoyed?

With regards to flavour, Yep. Decent flavour and a nice little cloud chucker.

The general vape experience is what it is and there is very little you can do about it apart from adjusting the airflow.

vape pen kit

Is this device versatile to suit a new vaper, and an experienced one a like?

I would say this device is probably only for one type of vaper – someone that just needs simple on-the-go vaping with no faff.

If you’re new to vaping, this may get you going but certainly not if you’re looking to match a lit cigarette-like experience.

Have you bought this vape kit, or likely to?

Or have you given it a try?

The Freemax Twister 30W kit review and if the name rings a bell let me answer the door!

This is the baby brother to the hugely popular Freemax Twister 80W kit shrunk down in size, battery capacity and tank size.

Freemax Twister 30W Kit Handcheck

It certainly seems that Freemax has been living up to its claims of “consistently created progress based on user feedback“. The seven year old vape manufacturer was the first to launch the dual vertical deck mesh sub ohm tank.

The Freemax Gemm 25W pod kit came with what appeared to be disposable tanks, with the difference in flavour was instantly noticeable thanks to the use of tea fibre cotton.

That’s another innovation on their part and one that seems to have done nothing to tarnish their reputation as highly influential players currently within the industry.

What Can We Expect From The Freemax Twister 30W kit?

An outer sleeve that is extremely difficult to get into! lol

We’ve got all the hallmarks of a basic starter kit with some snazzy extras thrown in.

The tank features airflow design for both mouth to lung and direct lung vaping. What’s clever is they work completely independent of each other.

Freemax Twister 30W Kit Boxed

Expect the unique twist style adjuster on the bottom of the battery to dial in your sweet spot. Tea fibre cotton has been utilized once again so that should also enhance flavour.

The twister mechanic means there’s no screen display on the Freemax Twister 30W kit, but a whole host of protective measures have been incorporated into the chip. Diagnostics are visible by an embedded LED light on the firing button.

We can expect the Freemax Twister 30W kit to appeal primarily to a newer vaper seeking out the experiences of both MTL and DTL vaping.

Inside The Box

It has to be said that Freemax has done a fine job in establishing what this kit is all about, they’ve even included two drip tips as proof.

Freemax Twister 30W kit unboxing

  • Freemax Twister 30W VW Mod
  • Freemax Fireluke 22 tank (Freemax 1.5ohm MTL mesh coil installed)
  • 510 MTL drip tip (installed)

I received the 2ml TPD compliant version of the Freemax Twister 30W Kit but there’s also a 3.5ml non EU version available showing the kit with the bubble glass extension on the box.

Aside from the increased tank capacity with the 0.5ohm coil and direct lung drip tip pre installed everything else is common to both variations package wise.

It comes in a choice of solid colour schemes. Black, Blue, Gold, Rainbow, Green and the one under review, Stainless Steel.

Design and Build Quality

Mod Section

The mod or battery section is comprised of steel and has a very smooth finish overall.

I measured its height to be 78.6mm and the width to be pretty much bang on 22mm. The gold plated 510 connector pin is spring loaded with enough throw available to carry out its intended job.

Freemax Twister 30W kit battery section

At the top is the raised fire button – good to see how tactile and responsive it is. It’s the industry standard of five clicks to power on – five clicks to power off.

The battery features all the usual built in safety measures including overcharge, overheat and short circuit protection among others.

For a few examples, the led will flash white five times whenever turned on or off. It will flash red sixteen times when power has fully drained from the battery, and when plugged into a USB port the LED will flash blue five times then remain a solid red until fully charged.

The USB connector itself can also be found at the top on the opposite side of the battery.

It’s at the base where all the mechanical magic can be found and the reason why this device is named the Twister. The minimum output you can obtain is 7.5W, although you’re probably never going to use this level of power.

Freemax Twister 30W Kit twist mechanic

Twisting to the right will increase the wattage increments by 2.5W, indicated through a small viewing window measuring 5mm. There’s a distinct click for each increase you select and stopping at the 30W setting.

There’s plenty of knurling around the adjustment ring which is just as well because there’s a high degree of tolerance.

Freemax Twister 30W kit battery venting

The side of the battery features laser etched logos as well as on the underside. The underside has six pinhole battery vents which is always nice to see.

Fireluke 22 Tank

With the drip tips removed the tank measures 35.1mm excluding the 510 pin and as with the battery, pretty much bang on 22mm in width.

Freemax Twister 30W Fireluke 22 tank

Starting at the top and with the two included Delrin drip tips the MTL version measures 15.8mm in height. The DTL one has a 10mm bore with a height of 11.5mm. Dual O rings are included with both and you should be able to use your own favourites too.

Freemax Twister 30w Kit MTL and DL drip tips

The top cap spins freely preventing little fingers from entering the tank. The knurling provides grip in order to partially lift the top cap before sliding back and revealing the fill port. It’s a tried and tested approach that works very well with the Fireluke 22.

Freemax Twister 30W Kit top slide to fill mechanism
The Freemax Fireluke 22 tank features a 10mm wide fill port. Ideal for needle tip bottles.

Freemax Twister 30W – How To Fill The Tank

  • Find the red marker under the top cap of the Fireluke 22 tank
  • Lift the spring loaded top cap and and slide back at the position of the red marker
  • With the fill port now exposed gently administer E liquid into the tank section
  • Slide the top cap forwards until the top cap slips back into place

Freemax Twister 30W Kit tank filling

(When using a new coil always allow five minutes for the juice to fully saturate into the cotton prior to vaping).

The coils are plug and play and very easy to install. Just remember to align the wicking ports of the coil with the juice flow windows of the inner chimney.

Freemax Twister 30W – How To Install The Coil

  • (If attached) Unscrew the Fireluke 22 tank from the battery counter clockwise
  • Unscrew the base of the tank by turning it clockwise
  • Push the coil up an inside the chimney section of the Fireluke 22 tank
  • Screw the base of the tank back into place ensuring a firm seal

NB: Be mindful of your twister setting when installing a new coil. The power pulled from the coil is totally dependent on this, and you want to work inside the capability of the coil before you take your first vape.

This will avoid the coil from under-performing or worse still, presenting you with a dry hit! No one wants one of those.

Freemax Twister 30W Kit plug and play coils

The juice wicking ports auto close inside the chimney section when removing an old coil. Clever touch! This means no loss of e-liquid while plugging and playing.

A clever dual airflow arrangement is in place on the airflow control ring. By slowly rotating (I really wanna say twisting for some reason! lol) the ring to the right, four independent MTL slots become available.

If you rotate the AFC slowly to the right, the direct lung airflow slots become visible. Usually what happens on one side is reflected on the other – not so here. I give full credit to Freemax for a fantastic design feature.

How Does The Freemax Twister 30W Kit Perform?

I began testing with the preinstalled 1.5ohm SS904L mesh coil. It’s designed for e-liquid containing freebase nicotine between 6 – 18mg strength and nicotine salt of up to 20mg in the UK.

Freemax Twister 30W – 1.5ohm MTL mesh coil 8-12W best 10W

20mg nicotine salt E liquid was used to test this mouth to lung coil and it’s Super Berry Sherbet from Double Drip.

The widest pin hole slot provided quite an airy MTL vape making it possible to pull for a longer period than usual.

Freemax Twister 30W 1.5ohm MTL coil

A fair amount of vapour gets lost during exhale but does nothing to ruin the superb flavour the 1.5ohm mesh coil produces.

The fruity tones are bright, lively and well defined. Flavour lingers in a very satisfying manner and the overall cloud production very much mimics that of a cigarette.

Fireluke 22 tank MTL airflow

It’s when adjusting the pinhole setting to its most restrictive that a change is most noticeable. Although only marginally different the coil was now performing perfectly as a MTL.

The restriction is pretty much spot on still allowing for a comfortable vape and the flavours appear even more buoyant and concentrated.

Freemax Twister 30W – 0.5ohm DL mesh coil 15-30W Best 25W

I tested this sub ohm mesh coil using Juuce Watermelon. It’s a generic profile with a ratio of 85VG/15PG.

0.5ohm mesh coil

Before I start, I was blissfully unaware of the liquid density believing it to be a 70VG/30PG mix – my bad. That’s on me lol. I’m happy to report that this coil is more than capable of wicking efficiently under these conditions regardless.

Running at 25W, the watermelon came through rich, sharp and produced bags of flavour being consistently good with every vape. No wetness, no dryness.

With the direct lung setting at its widest I noticed the slightest of restriction, still offering up adequate vapour production during exhale. About what you could expect from a coil with a maximum output of 30W.

Fireluke 22 tank DTL airflow

Closing the airflow down to three pin holes caused a radical change of airflow. This now became a very restrictive direct lung affair but the flavour from the watermelon still popped.

Vapour production started to suffer taking on the appearance expected from a mouth to lung exhale.

Utilizing a single airflow slot simply put the vape into MTL mode.

I found that a little curious, there already being a dedicated coil and airflow structure for this particular method of vaping.

I guess it simply makes the Fireluke 22 tank that little more versatile.

Pros

  • Leak proof tank
  • Ability to swap coils with juice still in the tank
  • Child proof fill mechanism works a treat
  • Fire button and activation is extremely responsive
  • Battery life is fantastic with the 1.5ohm MTL coil

Cons

  • Twister dial can be a little stiff and awkward to adjust for some  (subjective)
  • Steel finish on battery section is easily scratched

Final Review Verdict

Once again I think Freemax has come up trumps with the use of their proprietary tea fibre cotton.

In combination with the stainless steel mesh material it clearly enhances the flavour properties of e-liquid. That’s the beauty of FM COILTECH 4.0 technology.

handcheck 2

As far as the coils are concerned I think it’s best to stick with 50VG/50PG ratios with the 1.5ohm MTL coil. It wicked perfectly and flavour was banging!

With the 0.5ohm coil although I inadvertently tested with a thicker juice ratio and experienced no issues, work between 60VG/40PG – 70VG/30PG. The reason I say that is because you’re likely to eek out a little more life from the coil.

I experienced no leaking at all from either coil and only a minimal amount of condensate inside the deck of the tank.

Battery life was insanely good with the 1.5ohm MTL coil. I got nineteen and a half hours and that’s with some serious chain vaping thrown in for good measure!

The 0.5ohm sub ohm coil fared considerably poorer coming in at seven and a half hours before the battery gave up the ghost. Of course it was pulling double the power of the MTL coil so still on par with what is expected.

Review Summary

There’s really nothing to fault with the Freemax Twister 30W Kit.

It’s the ideal companion for any vaper making the leap from a mouth to lung vape to experiment with sub ohm vaping for the first time.

There’s no cumbersome menu screens, something a new vaper will appreciate and power is handled in a mechanical way – a simple no nonsense approach.

The kit gave me no issues whatsoever. Filling the tank and replacing a coil was a breeze!

During everyday use it performed fantastically – not one single leak from the airflow ports. The only time flavour dropped was when the battery was reaching the last half hour of life.

A thoroughly good bit of kit and certainly nothing to get my knickers in a twist over!

The Upends Uppen review, and the design of this ‘vape pen’ has certainly caused a bit of a stir.

Founded in Shenzen, China in 2019 Upends was formed from a team with over ten years experience, and their vision is to combine elegance and utility. And to become the most admired electronic cigarette brand among vapers.

Upends Uppen Hand Check

With knowledge in both production and processing, Upends have their own mantra.

To banish the stale and bring forth the fresh

If by stale they mean the tidal wave of pod devices flooding the market, fair point.

As for fresh? This review will be answering that one.

These kinds of quotes are inevitable from any new manufacturer. When all’s said and done it is literally another vape pen style device, folks.

Have Upends done enough to upend me? Only one way to find out!

What Can We Expect From the Upends Uppen?

I get it.

Upends is a very new vape manufacturer. I must admit to having zero knowledge of them.

By sharing a similar name to their first creation they’ve created a clever marketing trick and should if anything become memorable one hopes.

So what we can expect from the Upends Uppen is a device that caters entirely to the new vaper. Is it a gimmick or can it hold its own with the best vape pen devices on the market?

Personally, in this day and age it’s very pleasing to see. Lest we forget we all started somewhere, and for many, pen style devices offer the most effective way of quitting the dreaded death sticks.

The Upends Uppen is a very low powered device meaning the battery should hold out for at least a full days use. Its auto draw activated so no fire button.

With fixed airflow and wattage output, what you see is what you get. Things don’t get any simpler than this.

In fact they also don’t get any more portable than this – just don’t mistake it for your favourite Parker Knoll!

Inside the Box

The elegance and style of Upends is visibly represented with the packaging. Featuring a slim, rectangular hinged case I almost expect to be presented with a piece of jewellery!

Gone is the fold out road map instruction sheet and replaced with a glossy pamphlet. Although far too posh for me, it backs up the manufacturers intent.

I found the warranty card included as the back pages to the user guide.

Design and Build Quality

Let’s work from the cap down.

The cap is made of plastic so while strong can still be flexed. The top and clip are comprised of 18K gold, another example of the promised elegance.

Upends Uppen Dirt Resistant Cap
Bling, Bling!

Despite the gold clip, the darkened grey of the cap looks oddly out of place when attached to the lighter coloured battery.

Connecting the top cap to the battery is achieved with one simple snap. It’s very much the same way most traditional pen lids work, and there’s very little chance of losing it when in place.

Upends Uppen – the Pod

This is the disposable variety and the exterior is made entirely of plastic.

Upends liken the fixed mouthpiece to that of a clarinet. I could think of other things – feel free to message me for those!

Upends Uppen Antibacterial Mouthpiece

It’s not the most comfortable of mouthpieces and clearly designed with focus on a mouth to lung draw – nothing more.

The fixed coil includes four flax cotton wicking ports, two small and two slightly larger ones.

A typically narrow MTL chimney is visible through the perfectly clear viewing window.

Upends Uppen closed pod

The underside of the pod reveals two very small magnetic and battery contact points.

Upends Uppen Pod Battery And Magnetic Contacts
There’s an easy to use silicone stopper positioned on the side of the pod.

Upends uppen silicone stopper

Lifting it reveals a 6mm oval fill port best designed for smaller bottle nozzles, it’s ideal for those requiring a quick top up.

How to Fill the Upends Uppen Pod

  • Remove the cap and pull out the pod
  • Open the silicone plug on the side to reveal the fill port
  • With the pod on its side, gently squeeze e liquid inside the fill port
  • Replace the silicone plug then remove protective film from base of pod
  • Connect the pod to the battery section

Leave the device for five minutes, as this will allow e liquid to fully saturate into the cotton preventing the possibility of a dry hit.

Upends Uppen Pod Filling Process

The Upends Uppen Battery

Supremely lightweight being made of an aluminium alloy. The very underside houses the USB port so upright charging is obviously a no – no.

USB port

A pin hole LED on the side flashes white when the pod is connected. Down inside the battery the small magnet and battery contacts are visible.

Inner battery and magnet contacts

The battery features a nifty auto focus mechanic, and When slipping the pod inside, the magnets automatically align the correct position.

The device vibrates for a second and a single flash of the white LED confirms this.

Since removal of the pod is the only way to check current e liquid levels this is welcome feature.

During the charge cycle the LED will remain red, turning white during the last minute of charging. The Upend Uppen does allow you to vape during this time.

The charge percentages are represented as:

  • White LED 100% – 30%
  • Red LED 30% – 1%

Upends Uppen – Safety First

The Upends Uppen comes with a number of safety features.

  • Low voltage protection. When the battery needs recharging the LED will blink eight times and switch off
  • Overcharge protection. When the maximum inhale period of eight seconds is reached the LED will flash five times before automatically stopping
  • Short circuit protection. The red and white LED’s will flash three times and the device will vibrate briefly before stopping

How Does the Upends Uppen Perform?

The Uppen pod comes with a non removable coil made with a high resistance etched metal mesh using proprietary ETCHIP technology.

It’s designed to deliver a uniform temperature and precise control of e liquid delivery.

I tested the device using Double Drip Super Berry Sherbet, and it’s a 50VG/50PG ratio with high nicotine salt vape juice.

pod Filling

Upends Uppen – Coil Performance

This is a 1.2ohm mesh coil designed by Upends to evenly distribute flavour.

The dual fixed airflow slots at the top of the battery offer a somewhat airy MTL vape. I expected much more restriction so this was something of a disappointment.

Practically every pull resulted in far too much vapour escaping, leaving very little cloud production. It’s not an isolated case of course, but tends to have an effect on flavour quality as well as overall enjoyment.

I also found the vape experience rather dry and a little flat. All the refreshing zing of the sherbet was sorely absent and flavour properties were average at best.

Somewhere in the background of the exhale I was still able to pick up elements of the strawberry, blueberry and raspberry. Yet in all three fruits there was a lack of sweetness to bring the profile to life.

I recommend juice ratios of either 50VG/50PG – 60VG/40PG.

Upends Uppen – Battery Performance

The battery performance is very good. I got an impressive nine hours before the LED changed to red, after which I was able to eek out another hour before the device vibrated mid vape lol!

It took around an hour to fully recharge, zero to hero as they say. I didn’t notice any loss in performance during use so it’s safe to say the device holds a steady 10W power output.

Pros

  • Lightweight and pocket friendly
  • Interactive auto focus / vibration between pod and battery is a nice touch
  • Auto draw works efficiently
  • Extremely quiet vape
  • Doesn’t leak

Cons

  • Average flavour and cloud production
  • An airy MTL vape that won’t be suitable for everyone

Final Review Verdict

I have to admit the Upends Uppen has stumped me!

Fixed Airflow With Reverse Pen Lid
The Uppen showing one of the two fixed airflow slots on the side of the battery.

I just couldn’t pinpoint where the airflow was coming from.

The fixed dual airflow slots at the top of the battery section could not be blocked off, and neither could those under the coil at the base of the pod.

There was always sufficient airflow circulating.

Consequently I’m stuck between a rock and a hard place because the mouth to lung experience is too loose. Attempting a restrictive lung vape is far too uncomfortable and reduces what average flavour there already is.

Personally this device offers less than a standard CE4 clearomizer of yesteryear because those devices guaranteed a true mouth to lung vape.

They were also capable of better flavour and cloud production. It’s a step back unfortunately and mere aesthetic changes simply aren’t enough.

Who would I recommend the Upends Uppen To?

When all’s said and done the Uppen can still cut it for a new vaper with no experience. Use salt or high strength freebase nicotine and it’s likely to be very effective.

Filling is made very easy, positioning the pod is fool proof and the battery holds up very well, three vital components in the battle to beat the cancer sticks.

In this respect, the Upends Uppen wins its own little battle – it’s just not going to win any wars.
