VIP started out making cig-a-likes and moved on to refillable tanks and box mod style devices. Here they bring us a nice looking vape pen kit.

The Alpha Base kit is a vape pen designed for Sub Ohm vapers who use the DTL (Direct to Lung) vaping method. (We tell you all about vaping styles in our Guide to DTL and MTL).

The battery part of this device houses a 3000mAh capacity battery and is charged via the USB port on the rear of the mod.

In the specs inside the instruction leaflet it says the mod is “Variable Voltage 4-3.2V”. I am assuming this automatically adjusts or simply drops with the battery output remaining as I can see no way of manually adjusting this.

You also get the Alpha Mini tank in the kit (not the same tank as used on the Alpha Mini device though – just to confuse matters!).

The tank has a 2ml capacity and comes with 0.5ohm and 0.3ohm coils.

You can choose from Silver or Black versions.

As usual even though this device was sent through free of charge for review – I can only report back on the experience I got from the device I received.

Right time to get vaping!

Build Quality & Design

I received the Alpha Base kit in black.

The battery and tank match perfectly with some branding in Silver.

This is a chunky mod which is not very tall and does have some weight to it.

The mod (battery) part is pretty simple – just a single fire button which is square and has a back light and nothing else to adjust or faff with.

The tank is a bit annoying really – it has “VIP” and the VIP triangle logo on it but you can never get them to line up with the front of the mod – not a deal breaker but if you like things to be “right” it will make you frustrated.

Also there is a small gap between the bottom black part of the tank glass and the tank base which shows through in silver. Again spoiling the looks of the kit.

The tank has a similar airflow adjustment to the Alpha Mini kit. However it is even more difficult to fathom out on the Base model.

Again nothing in the instructions about how to adjust this sadly, so it is a bit trial and error.

The airflow inlet (B) is just below the drip tip and even rotating the top cap of the tank doesn’t adjust it – it just unscrews the top cap. So you sort of have to try and grip the smooth bit (A) over the air inlet and turn it. Not very good really. I found in the end sticking my nail in the slot and using that to lever the adjustment across – not great. The adjustment ring is really stupidly tight to turn as well.

The drip tip is a total mystery as I could not remove it despite unscrewing and tugging at it. It came out a bit then wouldn’t go back bloody in – sitting at a stupid angle. But I managed to get it right in the end but it still keeps popping out again.

Set-up Guide

The kit arrives with the battery and tank not connected. So simply screw the tank onto the battery.

Basic operation

• Power on / off – 5 clicks of the fire button
• To vape – hold down the fire button
• Short circuit protection – light will flash 5 times and power supply will be cut off.
• Low voltage protection – below 3V the LED indicator will flash 3 times and the device will not fire until recharged.
• Puff duration – if the fire button is held down longer than 10 seconds the light will flash 3 times and the device will not fire. This is to prevent danger or damage if the button is accidentally activated say in a bag or pocket.
• Pass-through – you can vape on the device whilst it is charging.

How To Charge The Battery

• Using the included USB cable install the small end into the USB port on the battery.
• Install the larger end into a suitable USB outlet.
• The button back light will come on whilst charging and go out when fully charged.

How To Fill The Tank

• Unscrew the top cap of the tank.
• Fill with e-liquid by letting it flow between the coil and the glass – do not add e-liquid to the coil centre hole.
• Only fill up to the “Max” line marked on the tank glass.
• Replace the top cap.
• If first refill on a new coil head leave to stand for 15 minutes for the cotton in the coil to absorb the liquid.

How To Change The Coil Head

• Only change the coil when the tank is empty or empty it beforehand.
• Unscrew the tank from the battery.
• Unscrew the tank base.
• The coil is a push in style – if you are like me the second you take the tank base off the coil falls out onto the floor or your clothes.
• Place a new coil into position – it probably won’t stay there though so quickly put the tank back together before you drop it!
• Add e-liquid to the tank as described above.
• Wait 10-15 minutes for the cotton in the coil head to absorb the e-liquid.

Although the tank in the Specs and on the box is called the “Alpha Mini Tank” – it is not the same tank as the one on the VIP Alpha Mini kit. Yep confusing much? The coil heads for the Alpha Base and Tense kits are not compatible with the Alpha Mini Kit.

How Does the VIP Alpha Base Kit Perform?

Flavour & Cloud Production

This is a Sub Ohm vaping kit therefore you need to make sure you are using the correct e-liquid.

To be on the safe side usually you need a higher VG e-liquid. We tell you all about PG and VG proportions in our guide.

Also its better to use lower nicotine strengths as you don’t require such a strong nicotine hit with sub ohm equipment.

I used my usual Stika Bombz Fruit Salad e-liquid which is 6mg Nicotine and 80%VG.

I quickly found out this was a bit too thick – the wicking holes in them coils are tiny and I got dry hits.

Sadly now I am trying to find an e-liquid with 70%VG to use in here. Thankfully I still had some Kiwi Kool left from the lovely IVG e-liquid range. Also I tried the Urban Sky e-liquid in here too as that is 70% VG.

I usually set the airflow in the mid position to start with and test it out at max and min too.

With the airflow fully closed there is a slight amount of air coming in but very little. Fully open it is still pretty restricted with a whistle too. This made my poor dog pretty confused bless her.

0.3ohm Coil

I filled the tank and left it overnight to soak in – not deliberately I add – I had forgotten I had filled it!

Anyway the next day I picked this beauty up and topped the tank up a bit more and took my first vape.

Usually coil heads can take a tankful or two to “bed in” and get the full flavour.

However this was beautiful from the first vape I took. Wow. Flavour comparable with some mesh and ceramic coils I have used.

Sadly this all went boobs up after 2 vapes in a row – yep dry hit time.

So if you see above I had to change over to a thinner e-liquid. This time a 70% VG to see if things improved.

Now I am not getting the flavour I had before – it may be that the coil was damaged from the thicker e-liquid however the cotton still looks pretty white and clean.

Sadly I am still getting dry hits. I think the tiny wicking holes in the equally tiny coils are really not cut out for thicker liquids.

I will try this tank and coil on another mod at low power. Either the dry hits from the thick e-liquid ruined the coil or the battery is kicking out too much power for this coil.

I am unable to rate this coil sadly for flavour or clouds.

0.5ohm Coil

In fact this coil is behaving much better than the 0.3ohm coil.

It definitely doesn’t feel as powerful or warm but there is a good taste.

Good flavour and getting the menthol hit coming through well with this coil.

This is pleasantly vapable you know – feels a touch underpowered but no dry hits and plenty of flavour.

There is a reasonable amount of vapour but not a lot.

Tank On A Mod

Well out of curiosity I tried this tank on a Variable Wattage Mod – the Vaporesso Revenger Mini in fact. So I tried both coils and this is what I found.

Looking closely at the tiniest writing known to man on the coil heads I did see a rating:

• 0.3ohm – 35-40W
• 0.5ohm – 35-40W

0.3ohm Coil On A Mod

I started off at 25W and went all the way up to 40W and got good flavour and clouds. There were no dry hits until I took it up to 50W. So this makes me think the Alpha Base battery might be taking the power too high for this coil?

0.5ohm Coil On A Mod

This was the total opposite. On the Alpha Base battery this felt very underpowered. I found 20W on a mod was similar to using this with the battery it was supplied with. I managed to take this to 35 and 40W and found the performance to be a whole lot better.

Battery Life

The battery life will depend on which coil and tank you use the battery with.

The mod is designed to automatically adjust to the tank and coil it came with so I probably wouldn’t use a different tank on this to be on the safe side.

As the 0.3ohm coil didn’t want to play I could only do a battery life test on the 0.5ohm coil

I found I got altogether around 8.5 hours of vaping. In the last 30 minutes of this the LED was pulsing when fire was pressed and the performance was pretty poor.

Pros

• It didn’t leak
• When used with 70% VG e-liquid the 0.5ohm coil did perform quite well.

Cons

• Tiny wicking holes in the tiny coils meant dry hits with 80% VG e-liquid.
• Airflow adjustment is very fiddly
• Instructions do not state how to adjust airflow or best PG/VG proportions to use.

Final Review Verdict

The VIP Alpha Base Kit didn’t really impress me sadly.

The 0.3ohm coil didn’t perform with 80% VG e-liquid and nothing on the website or instructions warned against using this. In hindsight I perhaps should have noticed how tiny the coils were – but if I can make this mistake I am sure many other people will.

The 0.5ohm coil with 70%VG liquid performed well – good flavour but not much vapour and felt a touch under-powered.

The design of the tank does have some flaws – the very miniscule coil heads and the stupid airflow design with no instructions on how to operate it infuriated me further.

The instructions on this kit need to make it clearer what e-liquid is recommended and I think the coil heads still need some work as they are too tiny to perform against similar sub ohm vape pens on the market.

After trying the tank on an adjustable mod the battery of the kit seems to be regulating its output weird. It was under-powered for the 0.5ohm coil and seems to have been over-powered for the 0.3ohm. Very strange as the tank performed way better when not used with the battery it came with.

Sorry to be so negative but I have used a lot better vape pens for a similar price.

They have released the new Alpha range consisting of two vape pen starter kits – the Alpha Mini MTL starter kit and the Alpha Base Kit which is a sub ohm vape pen. They have also released a box mod kit that was very good, the VIP Tense, reviewed here.

For this review we have the weeny little Alpha Mini which is for Mouth to Lung (MTL) vapers – basically those using high nicotine or nicotine Salt e-liquid. A MTL kit usually has tighter airflow to mimic the sensation of smoking tobacco and can be lower powered as the nic hit comes through the use of higher nicotine liquid.

The Mini has a 800mAh battery and runs a 1.4ohm coil. The tank is 1.8ml capacity and is top fill.

This is a refillable vape pen kit so no e-liquid is included with the kit – make sure to buy some suitable liquid to get you started!

No other controls other than a fire button and airflow adjustment to deal with so should be a nice simple back to basics style kit.

You can choose from Silver or Black versions.

I received the black version of the VIP Alpha Mini kit.

Oh lord it is tiny! The tank looks like it was made for a dolls house!

A note about the instructions – whilst they are pretty amazing I did find there were a few questions they didn’t answer…

• “Adjustable airflow” was stated on the specs but nothing in the instructions about how to do it
• Does the light stay on whilst charging, go off when fully charged?
• Coil head material

Anyway I found the airflow adjustment by chance and I watched the bloody thing charge to see if the light went out when it was finished – and it did!

This is tiny and lightweight but very very cute.

The vape tank is well built and I experienced no leaking at all.

The drip tip is like a tiny straw but it is a metal flange on the top cap covered with a black sleeve so you can’t fit your own drip tip on here.

It is a very neat looking kit, the black components all match, with small branding in silver.

The square fire button also has a backlight and the button clicks and operates in a responsive way.

Very neat little puppy this.

Set-up Guide

The device comes in two separate parts – the battery and the tank. Simply screw them together, charge the battery and fill the tank and you are ready to go.

Basic operation

• Power on / off – 5 clicks of the fire button
• Adjust airflow – the airflow inlet is within the drip tip – if you rotate the top cap of the tank (A) the slot (B) will open/close to restrict/open the airflow.
• Battery capacity remaining – the LED light will flash 3 times and the device will not fire when the voltage drops below 3V – time for a charge.
• When the battery level is below 30% remaining the LED will flash briefly as a warning.
• Pass-through – this device has pass-through capability – so you can vape whilst charging.
• Puff cut off – if the fire button is held down for longer than 10 seconds the device will cut off – this is to prevent accidental firing whilst in bags/pockets etc.
• Short circuit – if a short circuit is detected the light will flash 5 times and cut out.

How To Charge The Battery

• Using the swanky braided USB cable install the small end into the USB port of the Alpha Mini and the large end into a suitable USB outlet.
• The LED light will light up during charging and will extinguish when fully charged.

How To Fill The Tank

• Unscrew the top cap – this may take a few more turns than you expected as this is also the airflow adjustment ring too.
• When cap is removed squeeze e-liquid into the tank at the side of the coil head – between the glass and the coil. Do not add liquid to the centre hole of the coil.
• Replace the top cap and adjust the airflow again to your preference.

How To Change The Coil Head

• You will need to empty the tank before a coil change.
• Remove the tank from the battery.
• Turn the tank upside down and remove the tank base.
• The coils just pulls out and pushes in.
• Replace the tank base and fill the tank as described above.
• Leave the tank to stand for 5-10 minutes for the coil to soak up the e-liquid.

This was a bit fiddly to be honest.

The coil pulls out or in my case falls out the second you remove the tank base from the tank.

Opening the new coil and removing from the packet somehow the bottom connection came out so I had to try and push this back in – and this coil is tiny.

Again putting a new coil in it keeps falling out until you screw the tank base onto the tank.

How Does the VIP Alpha Mini Kit Perform?

Flavour & Cloud Production

This kit is a Mouth to Lung kit with 1.4ohm coil heads so therefore is designed for high nicotine or nicotine salt e-liquid.

Read our MTL vs DTL guide if you are unsure what type of vaper you are/will be.

I have my normal 50% VG/PG 12mg nicotine e-liquid so I tried this first.

As I also have some 50/50 VG/PG Nic Salts e-liquid (Salt Nix Northern Tobacco – the same flavour as found in the VLaddin Pods I loved) so will try this too!

With each test I set the airflow to the mid position to start with and adjusted accordingly.

You can fully close the airflow off to pretty much nothing and in the fully open position it is still very restricted.

50/50 Standard High Nicotine E-liquid

I use this e-liquid daily in my pod mod devices the Innokin EQ and the Joyetech Exceed Edge – so I sort of know what to expect in terms of flavour, vapour and throat hit.

Now in the Alpha mini so far the taste isn’t really there that I was expecting.

However I do get a good throat hit and more vapour than I thought would be happening.

After a few tank fulls the flavour has improved but it still isn’t as good as some pod mods I have used. Quite a muted flavour and still a touch of cotton taste.

There were no wicking issues and this gave no dry hits at all when primed correctly.

Sadly a nasty bout of Tonsillitis interrupted this review – but my gob is working again you will all be pleased to hear so let’s chuck some of the stronger stuff in this tank!

50/50 Nicotine Salt E-liquid

I found the flavour stronger in this and much more of a throat hit.

This device seems to be happier with Nic Salt e-liquid but again still quite muted flavour wise compared to other devices I use the same e-liquid in.

There was a lot less vapour with this e-liquid I did find.

Battery Life

As I was using strong nicotine e-liquid in this I couldn’t do a full session of vaping until the battery died as I would have been vomiting up my dinner.

So I did small bouts and added the time together to give a rough idea of the battery life.

In total I got 9 hours of vaping. In the last half hour of this the performance really dropped and the light on the fire button was sort of pulsating when it was pressed.

When the battery has totally discharged the light on the fire button flashes when pressed and the device will not fire until recharged.

Pros

• Very cute and tiny
• Quick to charge
• Well-built good quality
• Good throat hit
• Great battery life

Cons

• Whilst the instructions are pretty good they are missing a few details
• Cannot replace the drip tip
• Removing top cap to refill loses airflow adjustment
• Muted taste
• Fiddly coils

Final Review Verdict

The VIP Alpha Mini is a very basic starter kit – so putting on my “starter vaper” goggles you could do a hell of a lot worse.

But sadly I do think you could do a hell of a lot better really.

For those new to vaping the Innokin Endura T20-S or T18 or Joyetech Exceed D19 are far better vape pen style kits. As mentioned above I use pod mods which have better vapour and taste than the Alpha Mini too. These pod mods are also pretty much the same price.

The VIP Alpha Mini just feels… well.. a bit dated you know.

It is perfectly acceptable and by no means terrible. But I have had the luxury of using a lot of starter kits in the last year and this just doesn’t reach the same level as a lot of newer stuff. If you bought this and hadn’t tried any other kits you would be perfectly happy as it gives a good throat and nic hit and will definitely do the job.

So to sum up – OK – but you could get better for the same price.

Design and Build Quality

On first impression the build quality seems good on the VIP Tense kit. The buttons are comfortable clicky and the fire button has a short throw. This kit is tiny and the tank sits flush to the widest part of the mod. So, if you want to swap it out you’d better have some tanks in your collection with a similar (23mm) diameter to the Tense tank.

The plastic and metal body of the mod provides a sense of quality. There’s a good bit of weight to it and doesn’t feel the least bit cheap.

Obviously, the screen is tiny but everything you need on a starter kit is displayed clearly. Your wattage/temp take up most of the screen space. With the battery meter, coil resistance and voltage drawn taking up the other half of the screen.

The plastic coating on the front and back panels help protect from finger prints and the triangle pattern provides a luxury appearance.

There are definite clean lines and a lot of time seems to have been taken on aesthetics. The chamfered edges provide a comfortable and secure grip to such a tiny mod.

The battery charging port is on the back panel, but isn’t covered, so this could allow for a build up of pocket lint over time.

The tense atomiser has a silver and black colour scheme, making it contrast with the grey of the mod. However, it doesn’t look out of place. The threading on all parts is smooth and well manufactured. The screw top fill adds a little security as it’s less likely to come open in my pocket compared to a sliding top fill.

Hand Feel

Now I don’t have the biggest hands but the VIP Tense mod felt tiny even to me. The size and shape sit nicely in a closed grip, with the fire button being in easy reach. Firing was more from a tensing of my finger than a conscious push.

How Does The VIP Tense Kit Perform

I’ve used the VIP Tense kit every day on my commute for the last 2 weeks and I’ve been more than happy with it. I’ve even recommended it to some colleagues that are new to vaping.

I think this is where the VIP Tense is aimed. Someone looking for a discrete, first variable wattage device. Something that will give them the confidence they need to kick the stinkies for good.

The firing time was a little delayed but when it got there the flavour from the tiny 0.5ohm coil was amazing.

I was so surprised that I needed a closer look at the structure of the coil. I expected to find mesh as that seems to be a trend in stock coil tanks at the moment. Imagine my surprise when I saw a tiny Clapton shining back at me. I honestly didn’t know they made them this small! But they do and I’m glad of it, because it works bloody well!

I quickly opened the 0.3ohm coil to see if the clapton was a trend for VIP. It wasn’t, but what I did find was a dual parallel wrap. The performance was good, but I much preferred the flavour from the 0.5ohm coil.

Menu

The menus and modes are accessed by a 2 second sequential press of the menu button. I know that vapers aren’t constantly changing modes, but this method of changing modes seemed to take a really long time. Coupling this with the tiny menu button made this even more fiddly.

The tank itself looks really well put together and with the inclusion of more advanced coils you get a really good vaping experience. My only gripe is that you don’t get to experience vaping the VIP Tense tank at higher wattages.

So even though the Tense mod will take you up to 80W, the tank itself is stuck in the starter arena at around 35W. Not a big deal though especially if you are looking for a standard device.

Air Flow

This is where the tank lets itself down. There’s no resistance at all as it rotates around 360 degrees. I had to check the AFC every time I took this kit out of my pocket and because it’s sits flush to the drip tip even my beard made a sneaky adjustment for me.

Fill Me Up

The tank is simplicity itself to fill. There are no kidney holes to contend with simply unscrew the top and dump your liquid in up the max line. Oh, and don’t forget to adjust your AFC when you’ve put the cap back on…did I mention the AFC is loose!

Feed Me

The inner chamber of the tank would make you think there’s a standard sized coil inside. The 3 juice holes are evenly spaced around the chamber and they are massive and allow an unrestricted feed to the tiny coil inside.

Security!

You get an extra glass piece in with the kit, which is a good thing as you’ll probably break the original trying to remove it to clean. The O ring holding the glass to the base of the tank is so big it would be better calling it a washer. This glass does not want to be removed. Which in turn, provides extra security from leaks and that I can live with.

Fiddly Fingers

Replacing the coil is a little on the tricky side for this sausage fingered ginger. I found that I needed to use my other halfs finger nails to grip the base of the coil and remove it. The coil fits nice and snug with a push fit in the inner chamber. Just make sure you’ve got finger nails if you want to replace them quickly.

In all honesty, I don’t think the VIP Tense Stick kit will be leaving my side in the near future. It’s discrete enough that it doesn’t bulk out your pocket and with the little wonder coils it’s packing the flavour and cloud produced are near perfect for me.

What Did I Use?

When I was trying the Tense out with the airflow set for Mouth to Lung (MTL), I decided to see how it would perform with some FAR NS20 Nic Salts.

Tipping 2ml of Neon Green Slushie (65VG/35PG) probably wasn’t the best idea for someone who normally Direct to Lung (DTL) vapes at 3mg, but I can’t believe how clean the flavour was.

The lime was so prominent and juicy that even with the massive nic kick I enjoyed every puff I took. I even took some lung hits with this liquid, but we won’t talk about that.

The second liquid I paired was from Cheap Thrills’ WONUTZ range. This liquid comes in at a 70VG/30PG ratio. I always like to see how a cinnamon profile will work, especially with stock coil tanks.

I’ve got to say that both of these coils worked amazingly at the 35W I settled on. Not only did the cinnamon smash you with its warmth, but the buttery smoothness was so moreish that kept using it in the tense for the remainder of my testing.

I was impressed by the wicking in this tank. Even though the coils are tiny, the juice holes in the centre chamber are huge. This allows the juice flow keep pace with some quite vigorous chain vaping on my part without any dry hits.

Leak!

With the Tense tank being top airflow I wasn’t expecting any leaking. Couple that up with the massive bung at the base of the tank and you’ve got a pretty secure little system. As the tense lived mostly in my car it tended to roll around from time to time. With this in mind, I’ve experienced no leaking at all from this little beauty.

It’s discrete and full of flavour. The price point of £48.99 seems a little steep for a starter kit, but the ability to use the VIP Tense in multiple modes means it will last as you progress through your vaping journey.The coils have a good life span and deliver on performance.

They started with their cig-a-like e cigarettes but have moved into vape pens, vape mods and e-liquids. The latter of which we are taking a look at today with their new Arcadia Gran Reserva e liquid range.

The Arcadia range of e liquids are recommended for use in sub ohm tanks or clearomiser tanks with dual coils due to the higher VG content.

All the e liquid I am reviewing below does not contain nicotine and is a 50PG/50VG mix.

Masters Choice

Described by VIP E Cig as:

Our improved version of a popular U.S. gourmet e-liquid. Master’s Choice is a distinctive mix of Kentucky Bourbon, toasted coconut, roasted almond and finished with caramelised brown sugar.

Now, I have to admit two things. The first is that I actually really enjoy a single malt or a touch of Woodford Reserve Bourbon every now and then.

The second is that some things aren’t meant to be vaped.

I mean I like cockles, I love blue cheese and I’m all for a swipe of Marmite on my toast in the morning.

But I wouldn’t be rushing to pop them in my sub ohm tank and vape them.

So it’s safe to say I wasn’t really looking forward to Masters Choice. With that in mind I thought I would get it out of the way first.

I filled up my Aspire Cleito Pro with a fresh 0.4Ohm coil, which has been superb for flavor, and took my first vape.

To say I was surprised is an understatement. This e juice is lovely. On the inhale you get a light touch of the toasted coconut and almond with the exhale bringing a subtle yet noticeable Bourbon. This is all rounded of with the caremalised brown sugar.

This is a seriously tasty juice. It all works so well together and none of the flavours are overpowering. I have found myself vaping this sparingly in the evening, pretty much my after dinner vape.

If you are into your Bourbon and the other flavours sound like your thing then I would recommend giving this a try, it might just surprise you. Masters Choice is a top vape juice.

Aphrodite

Described by VIP E Cig As:

We’ve improved on a famous U.S. recipe to create our gourmet Aphrodite complex blend of mouthwatering flavours. A combination of creamy custard and a sweet strawberry flavour. Perfect to vape all day.

Jonny – Out of the package I received this was the e juice I was looking forward to trying!

I topped up the Vaptio P-I tank with a fresh 0.2 Ohm coil. The first flavour on the inhale is the strawberry, it’s not a fresh strawberry, more like a milkshake strawberry.

This is further enhanced by the custard that adds more of a creamy element while the custard itself sits in the background.

The exhale brings in the brown sugar to complete what is another delicious vape. At higher 40/50 wattage the brown sugar flavour was almost coming across a touch ‘burnt’ in flavour for my tastes so my preference was around the 30W watt range.

As VIP E Cigs describe it, Aphrodite was an easy all day vape for me.

Neils Aphrodite review:

Aphrodite is the Goddess of love and as sweet dessert e-liquids go – you’re either going to love this one or hate it.

This juice is sweet and then some.

The vanilla custard might be quite overpowering for some – for me it was a case of ‘almost too much vanilla’.

However the brown sugar takes your taste buds off on a tangent and then suddenly ripe fresh strawberries wash both flavours away.

I can’t help thinking this would have been the perfect dessert vape had the strawberry taste been a little less sweet.

Ecstasy

Described by VIP E Cig As:

Ecstasy is an e-liquid that blends the fantastic flavours of hot-baked Crème Brûlée with raspberries and a light as a feather cheesecake. This is a for those of you with a sweet tooth and a love of sugary treats.

Raspberry – Crème Brulee and Cheesecake.

Cheesecake is one of my favourite desserts come to that so is Crème Brulee and I adore raspberries so I was interested to see if Arcadia had managed to combine the three.

First up and the smell was divine – I really got that sweet Creme Brulee custardy odour and on the inhale my mouth was convinced I was about to crunch down on the sugary topping.

This was quickly whisked away by fluffy and slightly sharp cheesecake with the merest hint of buttery biscuit.

But it’s the exhale that I enjoyed most – fresh raspberries add a wondrous not too sweet not too sour palate cleansing that leaves you wanting more.

Ecstasy for my taste buds indeed.

Night Screamer

Back in the early eighties I tasted my first ice-cream float – a glass of lemonade with a dollop of vanilla ice-cream on top – and it was delicious.

Arcadia has re-created this popular drink/dessert and has almost pulled off the perfect blend.

The inhale is tarty lemon with the merest hint of fresh ripe strawberries but sadly the vanilla is far too heavy leaving my mouth tasting of tinned custard rather than ice-cream on the exhale.

Holier than Thou

VIP E Cig Say:

I’m a fruit flavoured e-liquid lover and as far as real fruits go this trio is on my top ten list of must haves in my fruit bowl.

The smell is stunning and my mouth was watering once I managed to pop the cap.
Arcadia has certainly blended these three together perfectly with the sweetness of the black grapes and apple filling your mouth with the taste of summer, before the slightly sharp kiwi washes over your tongue.

Of the five I tasted this was my favourite. I’ve sampled hundreds of fruit flavoured e-liquids and this is one of the best I’ve tasted – a gorgeous all day vape.

Sweet Fog

VIP E Cig Say:

Sweet Fog tastes of squishy smoky marshmallows, smooth peanut butter and caramel cream. This delectable e-liquid produces dense, sweet plumes of vapour that will leave you misty eyed and blissfully happy.

Marshmallow – Peanut Butter and Caramel Cream.

I’m yet to find a peanut butter flavoured e-liquid that I like and sadly once again I’ve found another one I don’t like at all.

The smell is reminiscent of one of those plugin air-fresheners and sadly for me the three flavours do not combine at all.

For me it was sickly sweet on the inhale and whilst the peanut butter flavour comes through on the exhale – unfortunately it didn’t taste like any peanut butter I’ve ever tasted.

Arcadia Gran Reserva Production

VIP E Cig Arcadia e juices are tested by a registered UKAS lab to screen for harmful compunds. The e liquid flavours are all stamped on their respective pages to show the results for Ethylene glycol, Diethylene glycol, Diacetyl, Acetoin and Acetyl propionyl.

All the Arcadia Gran Reserva range is free from the above.

Final Review Verdict

Jonny Says – I have, so far, only tried two of these e liquids (Maters Choice & Aphrodite). Both the flavours are, for me, very good.

If you want something away from the norm then I would recommend giving the Masters Choice a whirl, this was (surprisingly to me) my top pick. It may not be an all day vape but as a juice to put your feet up and vape it’s superb.

Aphrodite is an easy all day vape suited for those of you with a sweet tooth.

Add to this the fact that VIP Electronic Cigarette have gone the extra step to not only develop flavours that are free of Diacetly and AP but an overview of their lab results are listed on each individual flavour page for all to see.

VIP are calling this collection the Arcadia Gran Reserva and given the flavours are a little bit different from the usual fayre you can see why.

However.

If you’re entering the higher end of the e-liquid market you need to have all your bases covered.

I guess most of us don’t care what our go to juice is called. Mostly we just like the taste first – the vapor production second and then in some cases the throat hit.

The five e-liquids I’ve sampled are just OK – don’t forget e-liquid reviews are subjective and you may think they are stunning.

It’s the packaging as well as the flavours that lets these juices down for me. Now before you start I know ‘packaging is packaging’ lol but Arcadia has let themselves down if they think these juices are going to sit alongside other high end liquids.

I received the TPD compliant 10ml bottles/boxes and for me they are a boring brown with a weird eye staring out at you.

The bottles themselves are old school – as in they are squashy plastic with those really annoying tops that do not seem to want to snap open or indeed screw closed.

Maybe this is another TPD compliant issue more than anything else and something we are just going to have to get used to!

They have also added a little black cloud chaser logo to the box however the vapour production for me was merely OK.

More of a black cloud than a billowing white foggy cloud if I’m honest.

So I’m sorry to say whilst they are a reasonable e-liquid for me they are not Gran Reserva – though I would urge fruit flavoured e-liquid lovers to try the Holier than Thou it is delicious.

VIP Electronic Cigarette Introduction

They have a number of vaping options from beginners to the more advanced vaper. We have so far carried out a VIP Tense review, VIP Alpha Base, VIP Alpha Mini Base as well as some of their superb VIP Arcadia Gran Reserva E Liquids.

Today, we are taking a closer look at the VIP Skystorm AM30 vape mod.

In The Box

The Skystorm AM30 vape kit comes in a gold presentation box and contains the following:

• 1 X Skystorm AM30 Box Mod
• 1 X 510/EGO adapter
• 1 X USB Charging Cable
• 1 X Instruction sheet

Build Quality & Design

The VIP Skystorm AM30 is a 2000 mAh battery and as the name suggest a 30W box mod.

The look is similar to the Eleaf iStick albeit with some different design features.

It’s a compact mod that fits in the palm of the hand no problem, the sides of the mod have 3 ridges running the length of the mod to provide a grip of sorts.

The front of the mod is where you will find the LED screen, power and function buttons.

These are set well with no rattle.

The actual quality of the Skystorm is good, nice and solid. For me though I don’t personally like the overall looks and design. Of course this is a personal preference and you may disagree on this front.

One major thing for me that I found disappointing is the way tanks and clearomisers sit on top of the mod. I tried a few different options and none fit particularly well.

When I say fit, they screw on and work just fine, the issue for me is that if you fit a sub ohm tank such as the Aspire Cleito or the the Innokin iSub S there is overhang off the end of the mod.

It’s quite a bit of overhang as well, I like my mods to have a flush fitting look when the tank is placed on top.

Considering this mod powers up to 30W and is compatible with sub ohm vape tanks the design doesn’t really cater very well for them.

VIP sell the Skystorm AM30 in kits with a VIP ETS BDC clearomiser.

I have the same Aspire branded tank that I used with the AM30. This needs the EGO adapter in order to fit on this mod.

Again though, it just doesn’t (for me) look all that great on the mod. The 510 threaded connection could have done with being set back a few millimeters.

Performance

The Skystorm is a variable voltage / variable wattage mod. I personally just stick with wattage mode but both are easy to access and control.

Functions

• 5 Click power button on/off
• 2 Click power button 3 times to switch between VV/VW mode.
• Press function button up or down to scroll to preferred wattage/voltage (Increases/decreases in 0.1 increments)
• Screen displays current battery level, coil resistance, current wattage and voltage setting.

The selection functions work well and are easy to use. If you are new to VV/VW devices it will take 5 minutes to get used to but once you’ve got it you are good to go.

The only slight annoyance was the slow scroll through the wattage/voltage settings. It scrolls pretty slow, this could just be my impatience coming through so not a downside as such.

Clearomiser

The VIP ETS BDC is basically a rebranded Aspire tank. Which is a good thing as it’s is a great little tank with superb flavour and vapour performance for a clearomiser. My Halo Vapour Co vape juice hit all the notes expected.

I have the Aspire version for this review, these are the original manufacturers who would have made the branded VIP clearomiser.

There are some best practices for using this clearomiser with the Skystorm, stick to these and you will be vaping in no time at all.

Filling the tank

• Unscrew the bottom of the tank
• Ensure coil head is screwed in place firmly, but don’t over tighten.
• Take your e liquid bottle and drip the e juice down the inside wall of the clearomiser
• Do not overfill
• Screw the base back on firmly, again don’t over tighten
• Let the tank sit for 5 minutes before you use it. Very important! If you press the power button too soon you WILL burn the cotton in the coil and the coil will be ruined and need replacing. I know you just want to vape but have a little patience here

Using the tank with the Skystorm AM30

• Make sure the device is switched on – 5 clicks of the power button in quick succession will do this for you
• Start off your wattage/voltage on a low setting. Start at 8W and then work your way up the settings until you find the right warmth of vape for you. I personally like to vape this tank at 12.5W with the juice I am using. You will likely prefer a different setting.
• Depending on the e juice you use the settings may be different. Higher the wattage the warmer the vape.
• That’s pretty much it!

The actual performance of the VIP Skystorm AM30 with the ETS clearomiser is very good.

The battery life was very good with moderate vaping seeing me through 1.5 days without needing to charge.

I also tried this vape mod with the Innokin iSub S tank to test how it performs with a 0.5 ohm sub ohm coil. The mod coped well with this without any issues but I did have to run it at the upper levels of it’s wattage capabilities.

If you are using a sub ohm tank keep in mind that the battery will run down a lot quicker than a standard clearomiser tank.

What I like

The Skystorm is well built and feels solid in the hand. The VW/VV functions are easy to use and the 2000 mAh battery lasted a good amount of time with the ETS BDC clearomiser.

The now standard safety features are also included with short circuit protection, low voltage protection and 10-second cut off should the power button be accidentally pressed for a prolonged time.

What I don’t Like

Although the build quality is good I am not a fan of the actual design. As mentioned that is a personal taste and you may love the look of the device.

The other thing is the way the clearomiser sits on top of the mod. In short it isn’t the prettiest, slickest looking mod with it attached. It gets worse with a larger (22mm) sub ohm tank as this has around 3mm of overhang so look a little odd.

The final dislike is the slow scrolling though the wattage settings. Compared to other mods it seems to take an age.

Final VIP Skystorm AM30 Review Verdict

The AM30 is a bit of a mixed bag for me. On one hand it has a solid build with good performance. On the other I just personally don’t like the design and looks of the device especially when a clearomiser or tank is attached.

But, if you don’t mind the looks and you are just going to be using this with a standard clearomiser tank such as the ones VIP recommend then it will certainly perform well for you.

If you are looking to use exclusively to sub ohm vape there are better options available in terms of the tank fitting well on the device and functions.

Pro’s

• Solid build quality
• Easy to use
• Battery life is very good when used with a clearomiser

Cons

• The looks and design, I didn’t personally like
• Wouldn’t recommend for sub ohm vaping
• Sub ohm tanks over hang

They are both one of the same. To keep things simple I will be using the Vaptio name throughout the review. After-all that is what I have in front of me!

I had never actually heard of vape brand Vaptio until I received this vape mod for review.

A little digging shows that they are based in Seattle in the States and have partnered with Fist Union, one of the biggest e cig manufacturers in China. Straight off the bat the quality of their e cigs should be spot on.

The company started in 2014 but they already have a number of impressive looking mods in their vaping lineup.

Back to the product in hand. The Vaptio P-I vape mod from VIP Electronic Cigarette. This is a variable wattage, compact vape mod that is capable of firing upto 50W.

Let take a closer look at this mod.

Looks And Build Quality

Looks

The Vaptio vape mod is a tidy looking box mod. A lot smaller than I was expecting, the Vaptio fits comfortably in the palm of the hand and I don’t have the biggest hands.

If you have ever had or seen the Eleaf iStick 30W mod the size is similar. The Vaptio is just a touch taller.

The mod has a curved pattern design and is finished with a smooth matte coating that feels great to touch.

The power and function buttons are well located on the side and are finished in a rubberized material that again are a pleasure to operate. Below the buttons are 5 LED lights that show both the remaining battery and wattage selection.

More on that in the ‘Performance’ section.

The top and base is finished with a smoke black stainless steel that fits in really well with the whole look of the mod.

The side branding is subtle on the side which leads to a sleek looking device, just around the corner from this we have the micro USB charging connection. Due to this being located on the side and not the base you can leave the mod standing up right whilst charging.

Quality

The quality is fantastic. I have used many mods from the likes of Innokin, Kangertech and SMOK to name a few and the Vaptio more than holds it’s own in this company.

There is a nice weight to the mod and as mentioned before, the buttons have a rubberized finish. That means one thing.. Zero button rattle! Below

The 510 connection also has a spring loaded pin to allow for any variations in other tanks you may use with this device.

Really impressed so far.

How Does The Vaptio V-I from VIP E Cigs Perform?

The Vaptio P-I has a 2100 mAh battery capacity, when sub ohm vaping (moderately) this saw me through a full day. Depending on your vaping habits, this could be more or less.

Charging is carried out through the micro USB but unfortunately there is no pass through capability to allow you to vape whilst charging.

The Vaptio P-I has definitely been produced with simplicity in mind. It differs from most other sub ohm vape mods that are currently available in the way that the wattage selection functions.

The Vaptio doesn’t have an OLED screen that actually shows the wattage.

Here is a quick explanation of how to operate the mod:

• On/Off – Click the power button 5 times in quick succession to turn the mod on/off
• Lock – Press both function buttons (small buttons) together. Red light will flash to indicate a lock. This just keeps your current settings in place removing accidental wattage changes.
• Selecting Wattage – Press the function buttons up or down to select desired wattage. 1 light = 10W / 2 lights = 20W / 3 lights = 30W / 4 lights = 40W 5 lights = 50W.
• Battery level – Press power button quickly (Not long enough to fire up the tank). The lights will show the current wattage first THEN the amount of battery remaining.

The wattage selection on the Vaptio takes a few minutes to get used to but once you are familiar with it, it’s easy to understand.

It’s not going to be ideal for vapers that want more wattage control as you can only jump in 10W increments upto 50W rather than the 0.1W increments that is pretty much standard on other vape mods.

For vapers that simply want more power from their current device and don’t want complicated looking menus then this is super easy to use.

You will also find that once you find your preferred wattage setting for the e-liquid you are using then it’s a case of locking the setting (holding both function buttons) and you’re good to go.

Vaptio Sub Ohm Tank With 0.2 Ohm Coil

The Vaptio P-I kit comes with two OCC (Organic Cotton Coils) 0.2Ohm coils, one already pre built in the tank. The coils themselves have large holes for soaking up your e-juice and are a dual coil design.

There are no instructions for fitting the coils in the manual but it’s as simple as unscrewing and screwing back in a replacement.

The tank itself breaks down into a number of parts for easy cleaning, there is no replacement glass in the kit and from what I can see VIP Electronic Cigarette don’t sell them separately so be sure to take care with the tank.

Once your coils are in place filling is also simple. It’s best to fill from the bottom of the tank. Carefully remove the top part of the tank (with glass) from the base and with the drip tip pointing to the ground slowly drip your e-juice down the inside of the window.

I say slowly because the capacity is only 2ml and a quick fill risks overflowing into the chimney section of the tank, this is something you don’t want to do!

Replace the base, screw the tank onto your mod and then WAIT 5 minutes to allow the e liquid to soak into the coil head. Very important that last part.

If you fire up the device to vape too soon after filling you run the risk of dry burning your cotton. This will ruin your coil and is irreversible so keep that in mind.

Performance

I was vaping with the VIP Arcadia Aphrodite e liquid (Strawberry, Brown Sugar and Vanilla Custard) for this review and the results are great.

I tried all the wattage settings but due to this being a 0.2Ohm low resistance coil it is more suited to higher wattage settings.

• At 10W as expected not a lot happened. Not enough power for a 0.2 Ohm coil.
• At 20W I surprisingly got a decent amount of vapour and while it was a cool vape the flavour was good.
• At 30W the vape increased in warmth along with an improvement in the flavour
• At 40W as expected the vape gets warmer still and the flavour is more pronounced
• At 50W maximum setting the vapour is thick and the flavour while very good too warm for my personal tastes

The Vaptio sub ohm tank and 0.2 ohm coils performance is excellent, the flavours and vapour produced from this e liquid were spot on. My pick of the settings was at 30W.

Normally a 0.2 ohm coil would not get any results from a low 20W power output so I checked the coil resistance on a couple of Mods that show the attached coil resistance and the coil was showing to be nearer a 0.3 Ohm resistance.

So a little strange how they got that one wrong?

The airflow is a dual cyclops design and works very well in providing tighter or looser draws. Just have a play around to see what suits you. I personally like to vape with the airflow fully open.

Taking the oversight of the coil resistance out of the equation I was very pleased with the tanks performance!

The only real downside is the 2ml capacity. Heavy vapers will likely be refilling this tank on a regular basis as sub ohm vaping can drink the juice.

What I Like

The form factor and build quality of the Vaptio P I vape mod is excellent. It is compact, portable and fits well in the palm of your hand.

The tank and coils perform very well, the flavour and vapour volume excellent.

While not necessarily a mod for seasoned vapers due to the set 10W power settings I found it nice and easy to use and didn’t feel like I was missing out on in between wattage ie; 12W, 25W, 38W etc.

Vapers new to variable wattage mods should find this easy to pick up and use.

What I Dislike

There aren’t any real negatives but as mentioned above the set wattage increments may not be ideal for some vapers. The Vaptio has no OLED screen so you can not check coil resistance or any other features you can access with a display.

The mod cannot be vaped while charging which is a feature I like but isn’t a deal breaker.

The sub ohm tank only has a 2ml capacity. It is however a good starting point and other tanks can be used on the mod. The coil I was using had a 0.3Ohm rating when checked on other devices, not the 0.2Ohm it is labelled as.

Final Vaptio P-I Review Verdict

Overall, the Vaptio P-I e cig mod from VIP Electronic Cigarette is a great little device. Newer vapers that are looking to take the step up from vape pen devices should find this a simple mod to get to grips with.

You may of seen retail vendors in a shopping center near you similar to the stands that E-Lites have.

This is where I first came across the brand and decided to order myself a standard starter kit  to see what they were like.

So, lets get to the review!

VIP E Cigarette Video Review

In the box / Presentation

The standard kit comes with a cardboard cigarette style box with the following:

• • • 1 Battery
    • 2 cartomisers
    • 1 USB charger

All straight forward and basic.

Battery/Responsiveness

The e cig battery is designed to look like a ‘real cigarette’ but the quality feel isn’t there as it is with the likes of E-Lites or V2 Cigs.

The good thing is though that it doesn’t affect the actual performance of the battery in terms of aiding a nice smooth draw.

The switch was good, which basically means the battery didn’t activate with sudden movements or in windy conditions.

The only thing that isn’t so great is the battery life, it is not too bad out of the box but after the first few charges my battery was running out of power far too quickly for my liking.

If this was the only e cigarette I had then I would find myself having to wait too long between charges and not having enough vaping time when that came round.

The standard VIP kit is only supposed to be an introduction really, you would definitely want to buy a spare battery if you found this e cig was for you.

Overall – 3/5 Battery life is not great and the lack of a portable charging case (PCC) could leave you without an e cigarette if you are out and about away from a source to charge your battery.

Vapour / Flavour

I received 2 tobacco flavoured e liquid cartomisers in 2 different nicotine strengths, 16mg and 24mg.

Everyone is different when it comes to flavours, for me the VIP tobacco flavour was not to my taste, it just seemed a little flat, I have had better tobacco cartomisers/e-liquid. So, not the best but it did give quite a smooth vape with just the right throat hit.

When it comes to the vapour volume though they have definitely nailed it, the plumes of vapour were good and better than may e cigs this size.

As for the amount of time the cartomisers last for, another thing that will differ from user to user, I didn’t get an exact count but I certainly didn’t get the 40 cigarettes worth stated on their website from each refill. I would say it was closer to 20-25 for me. Again this something that will differ from user to user depending on how they vape.

Overall – 2/5 Bit of a mixed bag with the refills, I personally didn’t like the taste of their tobacco refills but they were very good when it came to the amount of vapour they produced.

Returns/Warranty

VIP Electronic Cigarettes do offer a refund for product that is returned in unused, original condition. They also offer a warranty on non consumable items.

There were both good and not so good things when it came to the VIP E Cigarette. The vapour volume was excellent and provided a very smooth draw.

The flavour for me though wasn’t quite there and neither was the battery life. The flavour is a subjective thing though.

This is however a cheap option, although I still think there are better options available if you are a first time user, two such kits being the Vapour2 Cigs Starter and the Epuffer Magnum Snaps. You get a lot more for your money with both when comparing to the similar VIP kits.
