The EU edition is called the “T-RX” and the standard edition is called the “T-Rex”. Hence why you will see images with both names in this preview.

As you can see this has similar styling to a lot of the recent Pod Mod vape devices such as the Lost Vape Thelema, Smok SCar P5 and Voopoo Drag X.

What Is New On The Teslacigs T-Rex Kit?

The kit consists of two main parts – the mod component and the cartridge or “pod”.

The mod component is powered by a removable battery which is not included. Thankfully you can use a single 20700, 21700 or 18650 battery which makes this more versatile and able to reach a higher output with the larger batteries.

Talking of output this has a variable wattage output of 7-95W – but obviously this will be lower if using a 18650 battery.

If you need to recharge in a hurry then the Type C USB port can be used at up to a 1.2A charge rate.

Also you can select the Bypass mode for full battery power which will diminish as the battery charge declines.

A 0.96in TFT displays all your user data and there are 9 themes for the screen display.

You can also select the firing method, either button fire, draw activated fire or both combined.

The fire button is also a dial which you can use to make the adjustments required.

On the rear of the mod is a dial for adjusting the airflow to your preference.

Another ace feature is the 510 adaptor which is available separately so you can use the mod with any other 510 base atomiser.

Looking at the pod now – this has a top fill port which has a child-lock.

The coils for this device are called the “T-P” range and you can choose from the following…

• 0.2ohm T-P1 – Mesh DTL coil (available separately)
• 0.6ohm T-P2 – Wire MTL coil (available separately)
• 0.8ohm T-P3 – Wire MTL coil (available separately)

A Closer Look At The Tesla Invader X Pod Kit

I know it looks just like a lot of the recent Mod Pod vape devices – for instance the Voopoo Vinci R which is very similar indeed.

But go with me and let’s see what the Invader X has to offer!

This is a pretty basic device – no screen but there are still plenty of interesting features.

On the base of the device is a dial and you can select which output setting you would prefer – 7W, 20W, 30W, 40W or 50W.

Also a switch on the front allows you to choose from Automatic draw firing, manual button operated firing or a mixture of both.

Inside the main body is a 1800mAh battery which is recharged via the USB type C port at up to 1A charge rate.

A LED indicator displays the battery capacity remaining by changing colour.

Looking at the pod now – this has a 6ml capacity in standard form – however this is reduced to 2ml for TPD regulated areas.

On the base of the pod is a slide switch to adjust the incoming airflow to your preference.

The kit includes the T-P2 0.6ohm Wire coil and the T-P1 0.2ohm Mesh coil.

Other compatible coils include:

As you can probably see the styling and features are based on the popular Invader range of mods including the Invader 4 and Invader 4X.

Looking Closer At The Tesla Invader GT Kit…

The Invader range have a reputation for being rugged mods with simple controls. Usually they have a Variable Voltage dial and are semi regulated.

The pod version is very similar. Although a lot smaller!

Inside the pod is a 1200mAh internal battery. Apparently you can charge this fully in 1.4 hours at a 1A charging rate via the USB Type C port.

Output wise this will output between 7 and 50W. But there is no screen. What you do get is a dial with 5 settings on – which mimics the VV dial on the bigger versions. So at a glance you can see what mode you have set.

Below the dial is a switch with 3 positions. This is to select how you fire the device. You can choose between auto inhale fire, pressing the fire button or a combination of both.

An LED indicator informs you of the battery capacity remaining.

Looking at the pod now – this is removable and refillable via the side fill port.

I am not sure if you can change the coils or if they are fixed. The Tesla website is a bit vague. However there are plenty of coil options and the fact there is a RBA coil means they might be replaceable. The coil options are:

• T-P1 Mesh 0.2ohm coil
• T-P2 Regular 0.6ohm coil
• T-P3 Mesh 0.8ohm coil
• T-P4 Mesh 0.3ohm coil
• RBA-P1 DIY rebuildable coil

The pod is secured in the device magnetically and you can rotate the mouthpiece to the angle you feel comfortable.

There are 12 colours to choose from: Blue, 7-colour, Black, Golden, Red, Stainless Steel, Orchid Realm, Fire Phoenix, Blue Phoenix, Firyland, Sea of Desire and Ice Fire Phoenix.

Tesla boast that this kit is a “round metal box” – hardly inspiring is it – but let’s have a look if there is more to this kit than that!

Tesla or “Teslacigs” (I think so people can find it easier on search engines!) have been in the business since 2013. I personally am a big fan of their “Punk” range of devices including the Punk 86W and Punk 85W!

What Do We Know About The Tesla T40W Kit?

The Tesla T40W kit consists of the T40W Mod and atomiser (tank).

Looking at the vape mod first, as the name suggests this has a maximum power output of 40W and is adjustable from 5W upwards.

A 0.49in OLED screen mounted on the top of the mod shows all the user data.

There is only a Variable Wattage (or “KA” in Teslaspeak) user mode and the mod has a fire button and adjustment buttons located on the side.

This is designed to be a simple but compact mod but still manages to conceal a 2000mAh internal battery. Charging is via the Micro USB port at up to 1A charge rate. Apparently you can fully charge this in 2 hours.

Moving on to the tank. This has replaceable coils and uses the “T” range of coils. These are apparently also compatible with the Arktos tank?

There are 2 resistance options for Nicotine Salt or regular e-liquid and both are included in the kit:

• 0.6ohm T-A3 – 12-26W mesh
• 1.2ohm T-A4 – 8-16W

There is a bottom adjustable airflow ring to tailor the airflow to your preference.

The tank has a top fill design with sealed fill ports to help prevent leaks.

A 10mm diameter drip tip is designed to be the same size as a standard cigarette – I suppose that may feel more familiar to smokers / ex-smokers.

There are 4 colours to choose from: Grey, Black, Red and Blue.

OK my cards are on the table. I love all of the Punk devices, I own the Punk 85W, the Punk 86W and would love the Punk 220W and the beautiful Punk Nano.

So you now know I am bound to love how the Punk Pod looks!

But – there is a BUT – I am not overly impressed with the actual device functions. It may be down to the lack of info on the Teslacigs website or that this pod isn’t offering much above any other basic pod mod device…

There is an internal 600mAh battery – which is even beaten by the tiny Voopoo Drag Nano which manages to pack 750mAh capacity in a similar (if not slightly smaller) body.

Output wise – I really am not sure. I am confused…

The Tesla site says this has a 6.4-9.5W output. But no mention if this is a constant, regulated or adjustable output or just the full battery power? Even the vendor sites are confused with different statements about variable output and constant output.

Mentioning battery power – I cannot see any mention of an indicator light for the battery capacity remaining either – which is one of my pet hates. But looking at photos it may be the white rectangle in the bottom corner of the device?

The charging system is Micro USB with the standard 0.5A charging rate, which apparently will charge in 1.6 hours fully.

There is no fire button or adjustment buttons – this is a simple draw activated device.

The pod appears to be refillable but I think the coil is fixed. Therefore when the coil has expired you will discard the pod and replace.

A 1.4ohm Stainless Steel 316L coil lives in the pod and it has organic cotton wicking.

There are 4 colours to choose from: Black, Ancient Bronze, Ancient Copper and Stainless Steel.

Yep that striking screen is 2 inches and is a HD TFT screen. I think the Rev Phantom and Smok X-Priv have similar sized screens and they are just epic.

The mod uses 2 18650 batteries which are not included and will output up to 213W.

There are lots of user modes to choose from including KA (Variable Wattage), Temperature Control (Ni, Ti, SS316), TCR, Taste Modes and 3 memory slots to store your own configurations.

The firmware is also upgradeable and there are multiple language options too.

Tesla say this is a “replaceable coil pod” in their marketing posters. But do not confuse this with a “rebuildable coil” as seen in the Smoant Pasito or Vapefly Jester kits like I did at first!

Basically what Tesla mean is that the Aerolite pod has removable coils – similar to the Smok Nord – so you don’t have to discard the whole pod when the coil is past its best. You simply pop a new coil in and away you go. Which is cheaper and less waste in the long run.

Anyway as mentioned above this is a pod mod – which means your e-liquid lives in a removable pod (or tank) which is refillable and will hold 2ml.

You install the coil into the pod and you can choose from two coil options – both included in the kit:

• T-A1 = 0.6ohm
• T-A2 = 0.9ohm

I would say these two coils are targeted to different vaping styles. The 0.6ohm more likely to be used by Direct To Lung (DTL) vapers with low nicotine e-liquid and the 0.9ohm more for Mouth To Lung (MTL) vapers with high nicotine strengths or nic salt liquid.

Inside the body of the device is an internal 1000mAh battery and the output will depend on which coil is installed. With the 0.6ohm T-A1 the output is 13-20W and 8.7-15W with the T-A2 0.9ohm.

Instead of the typical box mod styling the Punk 86W is a tube mod which is regulated and has a 0.49in OLED screen. This seems to follow the recent trend for regulated tube style mods such as the Uwell Nunchaku, Ehpro 101 Pro and the iJoy Saber.

I own the Uwell Nunchaku kit so I will obviously be making comparisons between the two devices as they are both targeted to a similar market.

Using a single 18650 battery the maximum output is 86W and you can choose from Variable Wattage or By-pass user modes.

I am a huge fan of all the Punk mods and own the Punk 85W which I think is still one of my prettiest devices.

There are 4 colours available – Gun Metal, Stainless Steel, Antique Brass and Antique Copper.

I received the Teslacigs Punk 86W mod for review purposes and I will report back honestly with my findings on the device in my possession.

Build Quality & Design

I received the Teslacigs Punk 86W Mod in the Gun Metal version.

First up this is really really beautiful!

The patterns on the metal casing are 3D and the metal finish is stunning.

Getting this out of the package I noticed 2 things… 1) this is heavier than I was expecting and 2) there is a massive “rattle” somewhere…

So I initially dismissed the rattle – which I thought would go away when a battery was installed.

I also didn’t see any branding anywhere – no “Punk 86W” and the only indication of who is was made by is on the underside of the mod base!

Top Of Mod and 510 Connection

The top of the mod is pretty plain with a spring loaded 510 connector.

The specs state the diameter of the mod is 28mm however this does taper down just before the top and with a crappo ruler I got the top diameter to be around 25-26mm.

I tried a few tanks on here. My favourite for “prettiness” was the Gun Metal Freemax Mesh Pro. But this tank does need to run at over 70W so the Punk with its 86W max will be guzzling up the battery life!Also the Gun Metal Fireluke Mesh looked pretty good on here too.

My main tank at the moment is the Eleaf Melo 4 with the mesh coils and that is 22mm diameter and looked sadly very silly on here!

However the Melo 4 tank only needs 55-60W to run nicely so this is more suited to the power output of the Punk 86W.

Main Mod

The main body of the mod is really robust and quite heavy.

There is a large single fire button which sadly is the source of the annoying rattle. It works perfectly and super responsive but wave that mod about and it rattles like a badly built fairground ride.

Further down the mod is the small but functional screen which has a dark display with light blue text.

The display shows:

• The mode selected
• The power selected
• Coil resistance
• Battery voltage
• Battery capacity graphic.

The screen cover is very small and is basically only the extent of the text – so at certain angles the edges of the cover distort the text slightly.

Above the screen are the adjustment buttons which are slightly hard to press as they are tiny and don’t protrude much from the mod body. But they don’t rattle at all.

On the top at the rear of the mod is the USB port. Not ideal as if you did use this for charging it would keep tipping the mod over.

Battery Compartment

The battery compartment is a screw on cap at the base of the device.

Phew – I am pleased with this. The reason being if you could see how much arsing about it takes to install the battery in the box style Punk 85W and its terrible battery cover you would understand!

The screw threads are lovely and the inside of the cap is the negative terminal. Would be nice if somewhere it notified you of this.

Look inside the mod and you will see a + sign and this shows you that the positive terminal is on the inside of the mod.

I do find once the battery is installed you do have to push on the battery cap whilst screwing it on to get it to start tightening. There is a decent amount of grip on the battery cap though so that helps.

On the underside of the battery cap is the very discrete “designed by Teslacigs” and the legal symbols. The cap also has 3 good size vent holes.

Set-up Guide

The mod arrives well packaged with a good instruction leaflet.

However there is no battery in the package so you will need to install one, plus a suitable atomiser and away you go!

Basic operation

• Turn on / off = 5 quick presses of the fire button.
• Vape = press and hold the fire button.
• Lock / Unlock = Hold down both adjustment buttons at the same time to lock and unlock.
• Adjustments = use the up and down adjustment buttons.
• Power mode selection = press the fire button 3 times to toggle between Variable Wattage or Bypass user modes. “W” displayed = Variable Wattage Mode and “B” displayed = Bypass.

Protections

• Fire cut off = if the fire button is held down it will cut off after 10 seconds to prevent damage.
• Low voltage = when battery voltage is low the device will display “Low Battery”.
• No atomiser = screen will display “No atomiser”.
• Short Circuit = the device will not fire if the resistance detected is below 0.1ohm.
• Reverse polarity = if the battery is installed the wrong way around the device will not fire.
• High resistance = if the resistance detected is too high the screen will display “High Resistance”.

Battery Considerations

This mod uses an external 18650 battery. You will need to remove the battery to charge it.

The instructions state you will require a 40A discharge current rated battery. Hmm I am not sure if one of these actually exist.

I had a look at Mooch’s 18650 battery comparison table and there are a few at 30A or over – so have a nosey to pick the best battery you can. (Tip for viewing the table – save it to your device, open in a gallery and you can then zoom in!)

I have a couple of Sony VTC5A which Mooch rates at 25-30A so I used these in this mod.

Using Fogstar’s battery amp calculator – using this at 70W max means I need at least a 26A output battery. So the VTC5A should be ok.

If using this device at lower wattage you will be able to use lower Amp rated batteries but worth double checking on the calculator. For use at 55W (as with my Melo 4 tank) I needed a 20A battery. That gives you a lot more to choose from – including popular batteries such as the Samsung 25R.

I did find using the Nunchaku with the Samsung 30Q battery it got quite hot. The 30Q has a better capacity but the current output is lower so it wasn’t best suited to the single battery Nunchaku.

It is not recommended to charge the battery whilst it is still in the mod so make sure to have a spare battery and a good quality battery charger to hand. We tell you all about battery safety in our guide.

How To Install The Battery

• If a battery is installed it is best to turn the mod upside down first to prevent the battery dropping out.
• Unscrew the bottom cap and remove battery (if installed).
• Install a new battery with the positive pole going inside the mod.
• Screw the bottom cap back on – this may need you to push the cap onto the mod as well as turn to tighten.

How Does the Teslacigs Punk 86W Mod Perform?

Using this at 55W it seemed to deliver the same power as other mods. I have no sophisticated equipment to test the output accurately but it did feel to give the same output I am used to on the Melo 4 tank.

Fire speed seems pretty quick – not quite as quick as the Yosta Livepor 100W which I have recently reviewed – however that was even quicker than my Voopoo Alpha One – so that was quite unusual!

Using the same battery and tank on my Nunchaku mod – felt exactly the same too. So they appear to be evenly matched on power and firing speed.

Just bear in mind using this at over 65W is going to hammer the battery life and also require a higher output battery. So really this mod is happier with tanks which require 65W or less power. For higher power tanks I would go for a dual battery mod.

Battery Life

There are a lot of variables when giving battery life comparisons, obviously the battery type, power setting and your own vaping habits will impact these figures.

Sadly this does not have a puff counter which I often used for battery comparisons so I will try to use the time I have been vaping.

Using a Sony VTC5A battery which has 2500mAh capacity and vaping regularly at 55W with 0.15ohm coil I got 4.5 hours of vaping.

Comparing this to the Nunchaku which I often felt guzzled the battery life I got 4 hours using the same tank, battery and power level.

So the battery life of the Punk 86W is slightly better than the Nunchaku.

Pros

• Beautiful looking device
• Regulated, adjustable and with a screen makes this very user friendly
• Simple operation – only VW and By-pass – no Temperature control or fiddly menus
• Adjustments move in 0.5W increments so quick to move through the settings.
• Better battery cover arrangement than previous Punk mods
• Apart from the fire button everything feels super robust and well made.

Cons

• Fire button rattle
• Negative battery polarity not marked
• Screen nestled in tightly so at some angles the display looks distorted by the edges of the screen cover.
• Do need to push on the battery cover whilst screwing it in to get it to tighten
• Might be difficult to pick a matching tank / RDA – especially in the Copper or Brass colours.
• Restricted in tank choice for power and size too. Anything under 24mm diameter looks a bit poo and over 65W power requirement will be running the battery down very quickly.
• Would have been nice to have the option of 21700 or 20700 battery – especially in a single battery mod it makes a big difference.

Final Review Verdict

The looks of this mod are just stunning and the latest in the Punk range does not disappoint on that score. I wanted to get my hands on this the second I saw it released!

Design / build wise there are a few niggles. A rattly fire button, the screen view is a bit distorted and lack of negative pole battery marking have made me drop a few points in my scores. However the mod is rugged and feels super well made apart from the fire button.

The main competition for me in this type of category was the Uwell Nunchaku – which is a very similar device with a similar output.

I prefer the looks of the Tesla Punk 86W straight away. The build quality and power delivery on both mods is pretty equal. I find the Tesla feels slightly heavier than the Nunchaku but not by much.

Just make sure to check you are using the right battery for the power level of the tank you want to use with it.

I do think Tesla missed a slight trick as the ability to use 21700 or 20700 batteries in here would have made this a must buy for a lot more people. Plus the higher output available with these batteries would make the mod a lot more versatile and less restrictive on the tank you can pair with it.

There have been now 5 versions of the invader range. This range tend to go for simple design and the ability to adjust the Voltage only whilst kicking out lots of power!

The Invader 4X mod is pretty similar to the Invader 4 apart from a change to the Voltage adjustment dial which is larger.

Also the Invader 4X doesn’t seem compatible with 20700 or 21700 batteries as the version 4 was. Which is a shame as that is a huge plus point for a lot of dual battery mods now.

There is no screen and you simply adjust the output voltage using the dial and there are 5 settings. The maximum output is apparently 8V.

The body is a PC and ABS plastic construction so should be pretty lightweight and nice in the hand – the Invader 4 was an Aluminium Alloy metal body.

The LED below the voltage dial will indicate the battery capacity remaining via a Blue, Red or Green colour code.

Included in the full kit is the Invader 4X RDA. There is not much info on this on the Teslacigs website but it looks like it could be a dual coil deck with adjustable airflow.

There are 4 colours to choose from – White, Black, Blue and Red.

As per usual the Teslacigs website is not exactly a fountain of Knowledge. In fact I am surprised it is actually working for a change.

This could be a good high output kit and please the fans of the Invader range.
