The Gemz Fogcity RTA is one of the newest RTA’s that Gemz has released to the market.

Some of their other products include Prime mover RTA, Luckstar RDTA, and of course the excellent Axis RTA that we reviewed not long ago.

Gemz Fogcity RTA FK

Designed and manufactured by Shenzhen Gemz Technology Co Ltd who are a Chinese company based in Shenzhen China.

They have in house designers that work closely together on product design and engineering to bring their visions to life.

After the great experience I had with the Axis RTA I’m really quite excited to see if the Fogcity RTA lives up to the high standard I have come to expect from Gemz – let’s find out.

Design and Build Quality

The quality of the Fogcity RTA and presentation in the box is very good; the design is innovative but a bit perplexing to me. I will say for what the tank is its been made well from stainless steel, Pyrex glass and Ultem.Gemz Fogcity RTA assemb

The Fogcity dismantles into 7 partsGemz Fogcity RTA bits

Driptip

Is a yellow polished Ultem 810 goon style drip tip that fits into the top cap.

Top cap and ring

The top cap is in 2 parts.

A ring which screws to the main section. The top cap has space for your 810 goon style drip-tip with an O ring inside to hold the drip-tip in place, Fogcity has been engrave twice around the cap and the shape of the cap is sloped.

Looking down through the cap at first I thought it was sealed but if angled you will see four outlet slots for your vapour to exit.Gemz Fogcity RTA TC

The reverse side of the top cap has a plate with threads for screwing into the main structure.

The Body of the Tank

According to the information I have about the Fogcity RTA the Pyrex glass tank should just push off.

I tried many times to remove the Pyrex glass when this RTA was new to me, even hot water wouldn’t shift this sucker, that is until I let my wife have a go lol with her long fingernails she was able slip her nails between the glass and the metal body sort of pushing the glass up a little (thanks Gemz you cost me a trip to the nail bar!) even then the pyrex tank was very tight to remove.

The internal structure is made of stainless steel and is one part, but in two separate sections.

1. The tank which holds your e-liquid being a top fill tank you pour your liquid into the wide filling aperture which measures 10.5mm, inside you have 2 kidney shaped airflow outlet slots for you vapour these slots run down part of the structure to the coil section.

2. The coil section has a tube connecting it with the tank section.Gemz Fogcity RTA cc

On the outside of the structure you will see 2 O rings which are meant to hold the glass in place, at the bottom of the structure you have another O ring for the glass to sit on.

Gemz Fogcity RTA coils coverBase/Airlow/AF Ring

The base is made of a gold plated stainless steel with a gold plated adjustable connection pin, , the 510 threads are clean and operate as they should,

The airflow ring is removable and under the ring is an O ring which in my opinion is low quality! Its flimsy and care has to be taken or the O ring will move and disrupt the airflow.

The side bottom airflow, while the ring has large adjustable holes, the internal airflow is tiny and makes me wonder why they added adjustable airflow!

Gemz Fogcity RTA AF ringThe Gemz Fogcity RTA has a post less style deck with tiny internal airflow holes, the deck will hold two coils. The wicking space you have either side of the RTA are quite deep, the centre of the build deck is a hollow post and a cup for feeding liquid to your wicks.

Around the deck you have another low quality O ring and threading for screwing into the tank portion of the RTA.

O rings

In my opinion all the O rings that are included with this RTA are of a very low quality.

Basic Guide to Coiling/Wicking the Gemz Fogcity RTAGemz Fogcity RTA CTI

* You do not need to empty the tank before changing your coils just turn it upside down and unscrew the base.

Measure your coils before installing them into the post less deck.Gemz Fogcity RTA CID

I suggest using the same diameter post you built your coils on to help you install and position them.

Raise your coils slightly so that no parts of the coils touch the airflow holes or you will get a short.

Gemz Fogcity RTA wickedPlace your cotton through the coils and tuck the ends into the wick spaces, I like to use enough cotton so I can just move it within the coil.

Pre wick the cotton and coils with e-liquid, and tuck the tails into the wick spaces then screw the base back into the main structure.

Fill the RTA’s tank, it will hold around 3ml of liquid. Leave it for a few minutes for the wick to soak up more liquid then vape away.

How Does The Gemz Fogcity RTA Perform?

For this review I had the Gemz Fogcity RTA sitting on my Tesla WYE, using the coils that came with the tank and a 70VG/30PG -liquid from King of Clouds “Blue Slush”.Gemz Fogcity RTA MAL

The included coils they say are 0.2ohms in reality they worked out to 0.16ohms after heating and strumming.

Flavour & Leaks

I have had no leaks in the time I’ve been testing this RTA, while the draw is on the tight side, one might expect, as I did, a tighter airflow would translate to a more intense flavour, this is simply not the case here.

I have since tried different builds and e-liquids in the Gemz Fogcity RTA with the same resulting effect – very little or no flavour!

My only guess is the internal deck airflow holes along with the tiny side external airflow are just too small. Add into the mix the way the airflow travels to the mouth-piece via tubes along the side of the tank, the partly blocked top cap which creates the most annoying whistle effect and in my eyes Gemz have failed to execute a good RTA.Gemz Fogcity RTA close

Fog In The Tank Is All Mine All Mine

The idea of seeing the coils while vaping is a great idea but from the moment I started to vape with this tank the coil window fogged up so you couldn’t see what was happening to your coils or cotton and to be very honest the more I vaped with this RTA the worse the fogging looked to me.Gemz Fogcity RTA nasty fog

Hot Tank

The shear heat that this RTA generates is scary! So much so even after a few puffs you can’t touch the tank!

One of the rare plus points is that I can see what Gemz had in mind for this tank and I give them a big plus for trying something a little different.

Clouds

If you are looking for a RTA that will chuck the clouds then this might be the tank for you if you’re not too worried about flavour.

At 80w+ this thing is a beast, I have taken the Fogcity up to the full 200w with the Tesla WYE in 10w increments and the result was to fill my small office within minutes with vapour lol.

While the vape is very warm aa would be expected at the higher wattages I was able to vape quite happily, I will say again that the flavour is none existent with this RTA and at 200w the 3ml tank empties incredibly fast lol.

After writing this review I looked at a couple of video reviews by trusted reviewers (MikeVapes and DJLsb Vapes) on YouTube as I thought I might be doing something wrong with this RTA. I was relieved to find that most of my conclusions about this RTA were also shared by Mike and Daniel.

Pros

  • A great deal of vapour can be produced
  • Quality of the RTA is good

Cons

  • No or very little flavour
  • To tight an airflow
  • To small airflow slots
  • Nasty whistle produced
  • Glass fogs up and looks nasty after a while
  • Difficult to remove the Pyrex tank
  • Tank gets extremely hot

Final Review Verdict

I started this review with high hopes that Gemz had at least repeated their earlier success with the Axis RTA, they haven’t!

While the quality is generally good I believe that Gemz should take this one back to the drawing board! However if you don’t care about flavour and are purely want a room full of clouds then this RTA might be for you.

Would I buy the Gemz Fogcity RTA again should I lose or damage it – A big NO from me.

Design and Build Quality

The Axis RTA from Gemz is a single coil RTA that is made from stainless steel. The Axis RTA disassembles in 5 parts:Gemz Axis RTA parts

Build Deck/Airflow/510Gemz Axis RTA Deck The build deck and posts are made of gold plated stainless steel, the block design posts feature top and side clamps which gives you three ways of inserting the single coil (using both top clamps, using both side clamps or one clamp of each) with the positive post sitting on a peek insulator.

Between the block posts is a single wide hole which is your internal airflow.

Gemz Axis RTA cotton placement

The deck has 2 notches either side to hold your cotton tails. The base of the build deck has space for cotton and e-liquid under this you have an o ring to cushion the glass tank and to also stop leaks.

The bottom external airflow is smooth and operates very well being fully adjustable cylon type.

Coil cover/chimney/liquid fill port

These are manufactured a single piece:Gemz Axis RTA cover

The Axis RTA is a top fill tank handled by the 2 kidney shaped fill ports, under the fill ports feature an o ring which the glass tank sits, above the fill ports you have a short male thread this screws into the top cap.

The tank is compatible with most 810 goon style drip-tips, also an o ring sits around the section that connects to the fill port to stop leaks.

The RTA has two options of Pyrex tanks one will hold 2.5ml of liquid and the bubble tank that is pre installed will hold 4ml.

Gemz Axis RTA in hand

The build and design quality of this RTA is excellent I am impressed with the overall look and feel of this RTA really it is beautiful.

A quick guide to coiling and filling the AXIS RTA

A plus point of the the Gemz Axis RTA is that you don’t have to empty the tank to change your wicks and coils.Gemz Axis RTA cotton in

Just turn the RTA upside down and unscrew the base! To install your coil place the leads through the post clamps and tighten the screws down (you have a choice of 3 ways to install your coil, the box says 2 but it is possible).

Method 1Gemz Axis RTA top screws

Method 2Gemz Axis RTA clamps

Method 3Gemz Axis RTA 3rd coil

Wick as you normally would and tuck the cotton into the 2 wick spaces making sure they just peek under the bottom of the build deck, moisten your wick and coils with E-liquid, re assemble your RTA and fill through the large kidney shaped fill ports under the top cap.

I suggest that you give the RTA a few minutes to soak up more liquid before first use.

A word about leaking RTA’s!

Many people get disillusioned by their RTA’s leaking! Take your time when wicking; it’s a trial and error process, sadly we can’t get away with that!

The diameter of your coil is dependent on how much cotton you use.

I air on the side of pulling off more cotton than needed and trimming down as I see fit.

I suggest with the Axis RTA, you need enough cotton so you can just move it when you put it through the coil. Fluff your cotton and as you are tucking it into the wick spaces press the cotton backward and slightly inwards, you want to make sure that no cotton interferes with the coil cover thread or you might experience leaks!

How Does Gemz AXIS RTA Perform?

For this review I first used a single 1.0ohm 24g 4mm kanthal coil, my own coconut cheesecake e liquid and on my VooPoo DRAG.Gemz Axis RTA mod and juice

20w

With the airflow wide open I was surprised to find that the vapour was quite thick with a very acceptable straight to lung (STL) hit the vape was cool with good flavour.

Dropping the airflow down to half I was able to get a very descent mouth to lung draw again the vape was cool with a good amount of vapour the flavour was very good.

Changing the coil (which is very easy to do just unscrew the base) I used a 0.25ohm 20g 4mm kanthal coil and the same liquid.

50w

Airflow wide open with a STL vape the resulting vapour was thick creamy and warm the flavour was to me excellent and very tasty.

80w

Airflow fully open I was able to almost fill my small office lol! Again the flavour was good but not as great as at 50 to 60w, I experienced some spit back and the vape was a little too hot for my micro lungs lol.Gemz Axis RTA up close

I’ve now settled at 55w for my sweet spot with this RTA giving a good balance between flavour, vapour and warmth with the airflow open wide.

What I Like

The deck with three possible ways to install the coil to me added a little variety in the mundane task, needless to say with the bubble glass installed 4ml of liquid is a god send compared to the smaller 2.5ml straight tank. The airflow is swooshy and I didn’t get any dry hits or leaking in the time I tested this RTA. I also like the fact that they include a couple of coils in the box

What I Didn’t Like

It’s got to be said I personally hate the bubble glass, to me it just doesn’t look as nice as it does when the 2.5ml straight tank is installed. Wicking this RTA can take a little practice to get the balance of the right amount of cotton in and avoiding the coil cover threads. No spare driptip or adaptor was included with this RTA.

Final Review Verdict

The Gemz AXIS RTA is a good looking tank that is easy to coil and it vape’s very well at low to medium wattage’s with good flavour.

I would say this would be an excellent RTA for both new and more experienced users alike.

Would I buy the Gemz AXIS RTA again if lost or damaged? Yes I would, it’s easy to use and delivers good vapour and flavour.

Pros

  • Good flavour/ vapour production
  • Easy to coil
  • Easy to fill
  • Well built
  • Excellent design and build quality
  • Very pleasing to the eye

Cons

  • Maybe to airy a draw for some
  • Wicking can take some practice will leak if not done correctly
  • No spare driptip or adaptor
  • Not everyone will like the included bubble tank

Gemztech is a very new Shenzhen vaping brand, with less than a handful of products on the market…the Lucky Star RDTA, Axis RTA and Fogcity RTA, all of which feature edgy aesthetics and cutting edge innovations.

Gems Prime Mover MainWith the release of the product I’ve been reviewing this week, it’s clear that Gemz is specialising in rebuildable atomiser gear…and, not doing too shabby a job, I might add. It looks like Gemz might be here to stay.

What Can We Expect From The Prime Mover RTA?

There Prime mover RTA is a beautiful thing, it features an interesting top cap design that allows for the length and look of the RTA to be transformed.

So can it match the best flavour RTA’s currently available? Let’s go in and take a closer look.

What’s In The Box

Build Quality & Design

The Prime Mover comes in a neat little gold box with a display sleeve and when I opened it for the first time, I was pretty much delighted by what is a very aesthetically pleasing RTA.

The first thing I noticed was the intricate steam-punk engraving on the round edged top cap, which looks the business, along with a bunch of unique features I’ll have to explain…starting at the bottom.Gemz Prime Mover RTA review

The base features a neat, gold plated 510 pin and the first band, working up, is a thin airflow adjustment ring with good tension, which allows you to adjust the flow through two 1 centimetre cyclops style slots. The thing which irritates me is that this airflow ring comes off, I later found, when removing the tank from a juicy vape. It’s effective but I’d certainly like to have seen it fixed to the device.

Okay, above that you’ll find a 3 ml tank and with an easy twist of the pyrex, the tank can be dismantled to reveal the gold plated deck, with dual, bevelled posts, each with a diagonal screw shutting off a single large terminal.

There are two upraised posts either side which direct the airflow straight at the coils. Neat cut outs either side each of your coil positions will keep wick in place, much like the wick cut outs you see on the iJoy Combo RDTA decks.

It’s a neat design but it will certainly be a tight fit for larger coils, such, I guess, is the nature of most RTAs.Gemz Prime Mover Exploded View

Now…the top cap design is where things get really groovy here: The top cap consists of two 10mm bands, one sits on the inside of the second band but, with the help of a press and twist lock and a spring mechanism, the latter (the band with the steam punk engravings) can be made to sit above the former, a purely aesthetic transformation that makes for a longer RTA.

This may not be every one’s cup of tea but, flash as I am, I like big things, big shiny things especially and so this transformation actually floats my vaping boat. It not only extends the RTA but also gives it a stepped contour which looks unique and pretty, then again the RTA looks pretty when shorter too…on account of the engraving design and the smooth sided silhouette.

For the two different top cap settings, 2 different drip tips are included, one with a long stem and the other with a short stem. The longer setting, where the top band isn’t locked into place, requires a drip tip installed in order for the top cap to stay in place so be aware of that.Gemz Prime Mover Full Length

When set long, a press down of the cap will allow you to access the top fill and with the setting short, you can just remove the drip tip. It’s very fiddly at first, especially when you remove the top cap during break down and this big spring comes flying at you but once you get the mechanism and know what’s where and what to do…it’s fun, it’s good looking and its original.

The drip tip obviously cannot be replaced, however an o-ring on the inside of the included, specialised tips allows you to install your own 810 into the top of this one, making for a nice long drip tip and just taking that flash-factor to new heights…whether that’’s your thing is up to you. I for one, am currently enjoying the feel of puffing on a double length 810.

I’ve never seen this anywhere else and I’ve certainly never seen this fill method. Kudos to Gemz for original design.

How Does The Gemz Prime Mover RTA Perform?

First up… get to know the spring mechanism, how it works and how to fill up, otherwise…you might think this thing is a nightmare to use, as I did for the first few hours. Once you get around the weirdness of the design, you’ll start to properly appreciate performance.

Airflow is slightly restricted throughout and while I like a restricted airflow, there is something of a whistle when vaping that just doesn’t feel quite right.Gemz Prime Mover RTA on mod

I suspect it has to do with either the narrow, RTA deck, combined with those airflow posts that put the airflow very, very close to your coils, along with these drip tips which have a fairly narrow shaft, or just one of these factors alone. Difficult to tell which but, having tried a couple of builds and settings, I’m sure it’s unavoidable on this tank.

That said, flavour is excellent…those ‘just there’ airflow shafts are to thank, restricted flow also; both of which would account for a high flavour vape but also the whistle.

3 Mls certainly isn’t the best capacity but given this is an RTA, I understand that space is an issue…it would have been a killer innovation to have that top cap accommodate an extra 2mls though, instead of just a purely aesthetic change.

I’ve experienced a great deal of leaking through the airflow on this RTA, I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve sworn as the juice began running down the side of my mod.

While I’m open to a little overflow here and there, a constant seeping out of the airflow becomes a bit of a hassle especially when you are filling with the  best e-juice you own!

Can be very expensive to replace.

As much as I love the aesthetic and flavour, the leaking and loose airflow ring resulted in an RTA experience that was anything from smooth. Sadly, you can’t love every vape you lay hands on, I do, however see a lot of potential for good things here: with a little tweaking and cleaning up of the airflow situation.

I find the refill method convenient so let’s look at that…

How To Fill The Gemz Prime Mover RTAGemz Prime Mover Fill 1

  • When in lengthened configuration, depress the top cap
  • Stick your nozzle into the opening and squeeze
  • When in shortened configuration, unscrew the drip tip
  • Avoiding the central shaft, fill through the opening on the sideGemz Prime Mover Fill 2

Ease of build

Triangular posts, raised airflow shafts and the RTA barrel which fits over the deck make for a tight squeeze.

However, me with my monster coil habits, was surprised that I didn’t have to tone it down with a couple less wraps on the alien wire build I installed, on my first build here, so it seems the squeeze isn’t that hard to work around. Manoeuvring and a little know how are necessary though.

Sadly, no single coil option here though.

Building is a relatively easy on this deck, the wick placement is made simple and neat by the cutouts in the deck for your cotton and once every thing is in place…the Gemz Prime Mover vapes pretty well. Gemz Prime Mover Build

The gold plated deck is good quality, sturdy and the triangular posts feature ample terminals with accessible screws to help make building a bit easier. While this deck is easy for an experienced user, the lack of space means things can go wrong if you don’t know what you’re doing, keep that in mind.Gemz Prime Mover Wick

What I Liked

It’s difficult not to appreciate the looks of this RTA, in both configurations, long and short it looks sexy, it really does. The idea of transforming the look is a great one…but it would have made more sense if the transformation was functional too (perhaps I’m expecting too much).

I enjoyed the novel fill method, easy build and beautiful flavour on this RTA.

What I Dislike

The airflow whistle is a bother, as is the loose airflow ring and the tendency to leak like a trooper through the airflow slots.

Final Review Verdict

This the Gemz Prime Mover to be a unique RTA with a great deal of potential but I feel that there’s still work to be done smoothing out those features and making the RTA a little more functional and smooth to operate. If you don’t mind some fiddly business, by all means, you’ll benefit from the eye candy factor and enhanced flavour of the Prime Mover.

I’ll only recommend this for experienced builders who know how to manage a compact build with some manoeuvring.

And..

Would I buy the Gemz Prime Mover RTA if I lost/broke the device? Yes… but mainly for aesthetic reasons as it’s not the smoothest performer around.

Pros

  • High flavour
  • Easy, innovative fill method
  • Unique and changeable looks
  • Good quality, functional deck

Cons

  • Low capacity, especially in light of the next con
  • Leaks through airflow
  • Airflow ring slips off during removal
  • Whistles during draw
