I can remember BLU from my salad days of vaping. I’m going back to around 2015 and not long after I’d liberated myself from the stinkies.

I seem to recall an extremely tall, slim vape pen that may have included silica wicking and a range of E-liquid flavours to suit.

Anyway, it’s safe to say that BLU played an important role in keeping me smoke free!

We have to go further back than my nostalgic ramblings to understand how BLU became established.

It began in 2009 with a very frustrated founder sitting in a bar in Charlotte, in the US.

Tired of smoking bans of the period he concluded there must be an alternative. From that observation grew BLU into the massive global brand of today.

In many ways we have BLU to thank us for the likes of the Elf Bar Elfa and Innokin Innobar. These products borrow heavily from the BLU Plus device with its pre-filled, replaceable pods.

Of course they’ve dipped their toes in the sea of all things disposable. In fact going all out to appease new vapers with cigarette style designs.

The BLU bar is much more in keeping with current trends, as we’re about to discover.

What Can We Expect From the BLU Bar Disposable Vape?

These have been designed exclusively for the UK and EU market and are TPD Compliant.

They contain 20mg of salt nicotine (no other strengths appear to be available at the time of writing). This makes them ideal candidates for the first time vaper used to smoking on a regular basis.

The hit from this level of nicotine will be more than enough to stave off the cravings for a cigarette.

There are a total of 10 fruity flavours to choose from and the 400mAh integrated battery is designed to last for anything up to 600 puffs.

This means each disposable is capable of lasting as long as a pack of fags. It also relies entirely on auto draw so again, the budding vaper will feel very much at home.

Lightweight, pocket friendly and considered 10% smaller than your average disposable, the BLU bar comes pre-charged and ready to vape straight out of the box.

Banana Ice

BLU Says:

Banana Ice is a fruity vape with a frosty finish. The flavour of creamy and sweet Banana is complemented by an icy menthol exhale.

I Say:

The level of Ice impresses me with this one. It’s more of a throat soother and doesn’t distract from the flavour on offer.

There’s definitely a creaminess to the exhale but at the same time also a dry quality. It’s evident with every toot and does mar the overall experience.

Sweetness pulls through from the opening inhale and tickles the taste buds long after the vape has finished.

The Banana content has no natural taste at all. Maybe not that surprising for a disposable vape but I always live in hope!

It’s the usual artificial, foam sweet variety that, although disappoints me, is always going to be more than acceptable for the newer vaper.

So there’s plenty ’nuff flavour in Banana Ice, co-existing with a well-balanced layering of ice and smattering of sweetness.

Kiwi Passionfruit

BLU Says:

Kiwi Passionfruit combines the flavours of sharp Kiwi and sweet Passionfruit for a balanced, tropical vape.

I Say:

Kiwi Passionfruit represents a very tropical tasting vape.

I get an explosion of flavour on the way out where I can pick out Mango, Pineapple and believe it or not – Strawberry – as an after taste.

It’s a very pleasant blending of flavour and the exhale is silky smooth. I find most of the sweetness during the exhale too, creating almost a ‘sugar lips’ effect after the vape.

Is it overloaded with sweetener? Yes, I think so. There doesn’t need to be quite so much and that does upset overall flavour quality to an extent.

The Koolada has been applied very well. It’s not too intense and blends well with the fruits.

Luckily those fruits are rich and flavoursome enough to keep interest levels alive.

Mango Ice

BLU Says:

Mango Ice takes ripe, juicy Mango flavour and adds a layer of frosty ice for a fruity vape with a menthol finish.

I Say:

Cream is often stated as playing a pivotal role in the flavour experience of Mango. That’s the underlying texture found with this disposable.

It works an absolute treat and not a trait I often find with such low powered device.

I would however suggest that the icy content has been overdone a bit. It doesn’t take long for the throat to start stinging under the power of the cooling agent.

The flavour of the fruit is distinct, if slightly dry on the exhale but thankfully lacks the intensity often applied to these devices.

The usual characteristic floral tones are subdued in this version and I wouldn’t say it contains mouth-watering properties.

Still, I favour this version over the myriad of chemical tasting alternatives flooding the market right now.

Strawberry Ice

BLU Says:

Strawberry Ice delivers a juicy Strawberry flavour, layered with chilly ice for a vape that balances sweet and cool notes.

I Say:

I guess it was too much to expect a natural tasting Strawberry, wasn’t it?

What we have here is your typical chewy sweet variety. Think Strawberry bootlaces. Think Chewit sweets – if you’re old enough to remember those!

A Strawberry for the masses as I describe it.

I’m not saying that’s a bad thing. It’s a highly accessible rendition of the fruit and one designed for the newer, casual vaper, virgin to the possibilities of flavour authenticity.

It pops along quite nicely and isn’t over loaded with sweetener which in my opinion, is always a plus.

The ice keeps things lively and quite refreshing so I’d suggest Strawberry Ice as being a favourite for the hot, Summer months.

Watermelon Ice

BLU Says:

Watermelon Ice features the taste of juicy, frozen Watermelon. The fruity flavour is present in every puff, with a frosty finish coming through on the exhale.

I Say:

Chemical tasting, oily and certainly the fullest flavour in the range tested. Even then the Watermelon still has a subdued quality to it.

Yes, this is your typical disposable vape Watermelon concentrate.

Yet it’s almost as if I’m not getting the full impact of the flavour. It’s missing the usual juicy, mouth-watering properties most disposables are capable of.

The sweetness seems to be appear later in the vape than it should do, making the whole experience of the exhale feel off kilter.

Don’t get me wrong. There’s enough flavour and you’ll certainly know you’re vaping Watermelon but there’s a chalky dryness to proceedings.

And there’s absolutely nothing wrong with the icy theme running throughout.

Battery Performance and Number of Puffs

No complaints from me!

The disposables lasted for 9 hours continuous use. At times I was chain vaping and rarely was the device far from my lips.

Given that I was both Mouth To Lung (MTL) vaping and Restrictive Direct to Lung (RDL) vaping I’d say the BLU bar held up extremely well. We tell you what these terms mean in our Guide To Vape Styles.

Admittedly the flavour drops off rapidly towards the end of the battery’s life span but to get over 600 puffs in is awesome.

The BLU, sorry Blue LED indicator on the base (illuminates solidly during auto draw) will flash 10 times when it’s time to responsibly dispose of the device.

Blu Bar Final Review Verdict

I can’t quite put my finger on it but after sampling it does feel like the range is under powered. I’m not sure if that’s due to the coil type used as I have no knowledge of what BLU used.

It’s just something that gnawed at me while testing. A few seemed to have a drier quality. This stopped them from having the intense, juicy, mouth-watering properties many disposables contain.

Sweetness levels were also a bit subdued but trust me, I’m not complaining about that!

The MTL vape is good. Maybe a tad looser than I’d like but generally gets the job done for the newbie vaper.

I found the “Duck Bill” style mouthpiece is comfortable and ergonomic while vapour production is suitably stealthy.

The BLU bar disposable is a stubby little fella and you’ll have no problem with its weight while slipping in a shirt or trouser pocket.

Blu are a well-known name in vaping who tend to sell devices and consumables via local shops, petrol stations and supermarkets in addition to online.

The MyBlu Vape Kit

The kit includes the battery part of the device which has a 350mAh capacity and outputs up to 3.9V.

You then install “pods” into this battery. The pods are like tanks which contain the e-liquid pre-filled and also the heating element to heat up the e-liquid for you to inhale.

You cannot refill the MyBlu pods so you will need to buy replacements when the e-liquid runs out.

This kind of system is ideal for people new to vaping and scared of anything too technical like filling and changing coil heads.

According to the Blu website you can fully charge the battery in 20 mins.

Build Quality & Design

So this is a tiny lightweight little device.

It is quite cute in a dull way.

You have a viewing window on the side of the battery which exposes the clear part of the pod so you really do get a good view of your e-liquid level.

The front has the Blu logo – but it isn’t garish in any way.

At the base of the battery is the micro USB port for charging.

The legal symbols are printed on the back of the battery but in black paint so they don’t stand out or look terrible.

The mouthpiece is a nice shape and it is so light you can hold the whole device in your mouth like a cigarette if you really wanted to.

Push the pod into the battery and you get a nice click and it feels sturdy. However I did keep trying to push the pod into the device more as I was getting misfires.

Set-up Guide

The device is not fully assembled when it arrives.

Simply charge the battery, install the pod and off you go!

Basic operation

• To vape – inhale on the mouthpiece.
• Battery Indicator- Blue = 20-100% charged, Orange = 5-19% charged and Red = recharge now!
• Passthrough – you can vape on this whilst charging.
• 10 second puff cut out – if the device fires for longer than 10 seconds it will cut out to prevent overheating
• Short circuit – during use 5 flashes of light and shuts down, not in use 3 flashes of light and shut down.

How To Charge The Battery

• Attached the included USB charger to the Micro USB charging connection in the base of the battery.
• Install the USB connector into a suitable USB outlet.
• The LED on the battery will be lit up red whilst charging and will go off when fully charged.

How To Change The Pod

• The pod just pulls out from the battery.
• Remove a new pod from the packaging.
• Push the new pod into the battery until you hear a click.

How Does the MyBlu Starter Kit Perform?

Flavour & Cloud Production

So fully charged I started testing this device with the pods below.

I can tell you already this is not very good.

After leaving it on its side for a while – it has leaked.

Vaping I have to suck until I start seeing stars to get the sensor to trigger it to fire. I will say that the replacement kit I got doesn’t seem to have this issue.

And just to top all of that off I keep getting a mouth full of e-liquid. Usually blowing down the mouthpiece should clear that – but this is an auto fire device and that can damage the sensor. So in these cases remove the pod, wrap it in tissue and blow down the mouthpiece. I have done this several times and it clears for a while…

I have seen that other people got on OK with this device – but mine is really not trying to impress me at all.

*storms off in a strop.

Tobacco Flavour Pod – 1.6mg Nicotine

Oh my lord this is horrific…

Not only does vaping this make me gag I also had a gob full of e-liquid spit out.

I really can’t describe this taste – it is vile. Very musty and mouldy with a burnt chocolate mixed with chemicals – is about the best I can do in-between heaving. Wow – nasty!

Sadly this is also the flavour that comes in the kit – so I would warn people buy some other flavours before you write off the kit completely – the others are way better than this – urgh.

Tobacco Creme Flavour Pod – 0.8mg Nicotine

This is quite pleasant – more of a vanilla caramel type vibe but there is still the back taste of chemical tobacco. Not really a winner with me sadly but preferable to the other flavours I had!

Cherry Crush Flavour Pod – 0.8mg Nicotine

Eeeew this really isn’t nice at all.

Such a strong chemical taste – that is the tobacco flavouring and barely any cherry about the gaff at all.

Really not for me either.

New MyBlu Pods Received – Updated August 2019

Mango Apricot Flavour Pod – 0.8mg Nicotine

This is a surprise – I usually hate mango flavours – good job this doesn’t taste much like mango isn’t it!

This tastes like a Menthol e-liquid with a lot of cooling going on!

There is a slight background fruit tinge but not much – the menthol seems the predominant flavour. It is like a fruit ice lolly where there are so many fruits mixed in you can’t actually recognise a specific flavour?

Or if you eat a whole packet of Skittles at the same time!

But this is one of the nicer flavours I have tried in the range and is very vapeable (is that a word? It is now!).

Blueberry Flavour Pod – 1.8mg Nicotine Salt

I really got a very good taste of this e-liquid considering the pod decided to fill my mouth with it – good start – not!

This is a really chemically taste, almost what you would imagine Zoflora disinfectant to taste like. Perfumey and synthetic.

Sorry but the mouth-fulls of nic salt e-liquid are not nice at all.

Terrible. In fact I just looked at the wrapper the pod came in and there is e-liquid in there so it was leaking before I even unwrapped it.

I decided to try the other pod in the pack and guess what that wrapper is full of e-liquid too – no thanks!

Menthol Flavour Pod – 1.6mg Nicotine

Great even the outside of the wrappers have e-liquid on them – this is not going well at all.

Flavour wise this is a bit more like it!

This still has a musty type taste but there is more mint there.

The taste reminds me of the old Mint Imperial sweets – the round white ones.

This is ok flavour wise – not horrendous.

Strawberry Mint Flavour Pod – 1.8mg Nicotine Salt

Oh goody another packet with e-liquid in and this time the mouth piece is covered in e-liquid.

The things I have to do for you – so you don’t have to!

So I wiped off the e-liquid and had a vape.

This isn’t horrific but not great either. A musty strawberry in the background with some Menthol coming through.

In fact there is very little flavour or throat hit at all. I wasn’t sure I had actually got a vape out of this pod until I exhaled some vapour.

Yeah give this flavour a miss if I was you!

Can You Refill The MyBlu Pods?

I thought I would have a play to see if you can refill the pods.

This is usually not recommended and to be honest there is a limited amount of times you can do this as the coil will fail eventually.

Plus I was also dubious as the bloody thing leaked enough when the sealed pods were new – let alone after me bodging them!

Anyway it did work – there is no need to remove the mouthpiece – I realised this after I removed it. But the structure of the pod is in the photo below.

Basically use a small flat blade screwdriver and prise the bottom cap off the pod – you will get liquid coming out if it isn’t empty.

When this is removed the internal white silicon seal might come out with the coil and bottom cap assembly – make sure not to lose it.

If you are feeling ambitious you may be able to re-wick the coil – far too fiddly for me so I ran the pod and coil under the tap.

Make sure to replace the white silicon seal on the metal tube inside the pod and fill with e-liquid to about half full.

I used the Apollo Smoozie 20mg Nicotine Salt e-liquid as this is 50/50 PG/VG so should be fine for a pod mod.

Replace the bottom cap and press in firmly.

I had to wipe all the base and electrical contacts and I did notice a slight leak.

The first few vapes as expected were a bit watery and crackly as there was still some damp left in the pod from rinsing it out.

It did work – I got to taste the Smoozie a bit and got a small amount of vapour – but to be honest the vape from this device isn’t really worth the hassle of the refilling for me.

Battery Life

Obviously your vaping habits will dictate the battery life.

I do try to always give a guide of how long I got the battery to last – but in this case I was struggling.

I did get 2.5 hours before the mouthfuls of e-liquid and struggling to get the sodding thing to fire finally made me give up. Sorry.

Pros

• Simple to set up
• No difficult maintenance
• Can buy supplies at local stores
• Easy to swap between flavours and strengths
• Replacement device I was sent did work better

Cons

• Leaks if left laying on its side
• Keep getting a mouthful of e-liquid
• Sometimes hard to get it to fire without popping out a hernia
• Liquid flavours are not great

Final Review Verdict

We recently reviewed the Apollo Brez and Juul pod system – which are very similar in target market to the the MyBlu kit.

If you are looking at JUUL Vs Myblu I would say the JUUL is better but comapring those to the Apollo Brez, then the Brez wins out all day long.

The MyBlu works – sometimes, the pods are super easy to change and you can buy them from local shops. The flavours are not great, it leaked and mouthfuls of e-liquid are never fun.

Like I said above – mine might be faulty as I bought this out of the first batch when the kit was released so hopefully the issues may have been resolved?

Overall there are far better pod mods to buy – if you want a closed system look at the Apollo Brez – way better.

Updated August 2019 – New Device

This time around the device is working better – not all the pods spit! I think the massive issue with this kit is poor Myblu pods! The battery part seems to work fine I had no issues with the firing mechanism with this kit – it fired quickly when I inhaled.

The Blueberry pod left me with a mouthful of e-liquid! Most of the pods had leaked inside the wrapper before I had opened them. So the quality control still isn’t great. If I had paid £6 for a pack of leaky pods I would not be a happy Shelly!

The MyBlu is still not a great pod mod but it is leaps and bounds better than the original version I reviewed above. It is just let down by terrible pods.

Build Quality & Design

There are only 3 components to this device – the battery, clearomiser tank and mouthpiece.

The device is a black rubberised finish which feels lovely to hold.

The back-lights in general use are a bright blue. The button light turns red when discharged.

The lights are bright and colourful and enhance the looks of this in my opinion. The fire button itself is a lovely design – the triangle in the centre and the outer ring all light up together with the little battery indicator notches on the base. The tip also has a light up blue triangle too.

The blu PRO starter kit is for sale online, local shops and even supermarkets in the UK. The kit is retailing around the £15 mark. Which is pretty good value when you consider that is the price of only 3 disposable cig-a-likes.

The blu PRO Clearomiser Tank

The clearomiser tanks will need to be replaced at some point. The liquid and kit are stocked in lots of places. But the replacement clearomiser tanks are a rare species. Of the 4 major UK supermarkets only one stocked them – and they are priced at around £5. That price is for one empty tank – remember you will also have to buy liquid for this.

Although the tanks are expensive remember with a tank you are then free to use whatever ecig liquid brand, strength and flavour you wish. It is a huge financial saving on buying prefilled cartridges too.

These tanks are not designed for High VG liquid so 50/50% PG/VG maximum is recommended. If possible stay below 50% VG as it is a lot thicker and doesn’t absorb into the wicks inside the tank as well. For information about VG and PG click here.

The mouthpiece feels great and the tanks have the same rubberised black coating as the battery which makes this feel more expensive.

The Battery:

The battery has a screw thread to connect it to the tank. It does not have an internal thread just an external one. I tried some standard 510 and ego style tanks on this and sadly none of them fit.

This is super long and slim. It is extremely light. It isn’t a stealth kit which you could stuff up your sleeves – unless you have arms like Mr Tickle. Plus it glows like a 90’s rave so not easy to hide!

How Does The blu PRO Kit Perform?

I used the liquid from the blu E-liquid range- they contain VG and PG – but no actual proportions given. This liquid is designed for blu devices so should be the perfect partner.

First let’s take a quick look at our quick start guide to show you how easy this is to get up and vaping.

Basic operation of the Blu Pro

• 5 click on/off – button and tip will flash 3 times to confirm.
• 20 flashes of button and tip = battery discharged
• Button will flash red when battery discharging

Charging The Battery

The website states the battery is supplied partially charged and they recommend you fully charge before use.

• Plug the small connector of the USB charger into the blu PRO battery charging port.
• Plug the USB charger into a suitable USB outlet.
• The light on the charger will glow red and the tip of the battery will flash to indicate battery is charging.
• Once fully charged the light on the charger will turn blue.

How To Fill The Blu Pro Clearomiser Tank

This style tank uses wicks to transport the liquid to the heating coil. All are encased behind the smooth black housing and see through tank window.

The tank is a top filling style- which always makes life a lot easier.

The cartridge needs to be upright when refilling. It will stand up on its own when removed from the battery – but with battery attached you have no chance of it standing upright.

• Unscrew the clearomiser from the battery.
• Unscrew the mouthpiece.
• Place the liquid nozzle or dripper tip against the inside edge of the clearomiser.

• Avoiding the centre tube fill the clearomiser and monitor the level through the tank window.  Do not over fill. The correct fill level is the top of the window triangle.
• Screw the mouthpiece onto the clearomiser.
• Leave the clearomiser for 5-10 minutes to allow the wick to absorb the E-liquid.
• Screw the clearomiser onto the battery.
• After you’ve filled your e-liquid and before using it, take a few quick, short puffs without pressing the fire button.
• blu recommend you keep your clearomiser at least a quarter full to maintain a better flavour

How To Change The blu PRO Clearomiser Tank

blu recommend you replace your blu PRO Clearomiser every ten refills to maintain a consistent, flavourful vape.

The clearomiser simply screws on and off the battery connection.

I did receive 6 clearomiser tanks with this – as I had 6 e liquids to review as well. 1 tank was included in starter kit and got 5 supplied on their own in separate boxes.

5/6 tanks worked fine. The one tank on the left as you can see by the photo has no airflow holes when you compare it to the tank on the right. When it was put onto the battery I went a bit purple trying to inhale from it. I had a look if anything I could do with it but it does appear to not be fixable unless I get my drill out.

Flavour & Cloud Production

I first tried the blu Mint Chocolate liquid in this.

Wow to say I was shocked is an understatement. As you will see in my review for the Blu e liquid I got such an icy cold blast onto my tonsils on the inhale followed by a lovely chocolate taste on the exhale. So this made an impact on a few senses all at once which I wasn’t expecting.

I have to say I didn’t expect much in the way of flavour or vapour.

The flavour output is slightly better than I expected and the vapour output was a lot better than I expected.

This is a very cool vape – you do not get any heat at all. With the rest of the range of blu liquids the flavour continued to come through well and still good vapour.

You do get a throat hit – but that does depend on the liquid you are using. The minty liquids from blu gave me a hefty icy throat blast.

Battery Life

This isn’t a super powerful device so the battery life on 1100 mAh should be ok – however there is a lot of lighting on this – it likes to glow a bit – so this might make the batteries struggle a bit.

I have only been using this intermittently so haven’t had a full days use yet to test how the battery lasts. Will update this when I have.

With vape pens such as this, it is always recommended to have a second battery to use in rotation. This way you should, in theory, always be able to have a fully charged battery ready. If you were to do this we would recommended just buying a complete second kit as the price difference doesn’t warrant the stand alone battery.

What I Like

I think it looks lovely – the blue lights really make this stand out.

What I Dislike

It just seems too tall – hard to balance in your hand and won’t stand up on its own.

Final Review Verdict

The Blu Pro e cig is a great little starter kit. Although not as simple as a cig-a-like this is far more versatile enabling you to choose liquid brands, strengths and flavours to suit you. It will be more economical than cartridge type devices and you are not tied to a particular brand or flavour.

You can buy replacement tanks and replacement batteries. But the batteries alone are almost the same price as a new starter kit which comes with a new tank too so I would buy that.

This is a natural step up from cig-a-likes but still simple enough to be a starter kit.

More advance vapers will find this underwhelming – but this is not a device targeted at cloud chasers and temp control fans. But if you found yourself stuck with a broken or lost device – this would do you and you won’t have wasted your money.

The “Mom” test – could I give this device to my (cig-a-like using) mom to use?

Yes and she is the target market for this. She is normally scared of anything with a “tank” and sees it as hard work – but I think she would cope with this. She would be happy to be able to buy spares from the supermarket (this is the main criteria she uses to choose a device – wants to buy it from a shop in person).

Apart from one dud clearomiser everything else worked perfectly and seems of good quality construction.

Pros

• Attractive design, the rubber finish and various lights make this look great and elevate it from a plain vape pen style.

• Better than expected taste and vapour.

blu have been creating simple starter devices since 2009 and are often for sale in many local shops, supermarkets and online.

The liquids are manufactured in the USA following wide-ranging research and development. blu appear to enjoy creating new flavours with input from their customers.

These liquids are offered in 0%, 0.8%, 0.9%, 1.6% and 1.8% nicotine strengths and 11 different flavours. Some liquids are only available in one strength. I have made a note of what strength liquid I was reviewing next to each flavour.

I had 6 bottles of liquid – “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” to me:

• Berry Swirl
• Tropic Tonic
• Mint Chocolate
• Caramel Cafe
• Polar Mint
• Green Apple

The device I used for reviewing these liquids was the blu PRO kit. Flavour can be down to individual preference and can also depend on device, wattage, coil resistance and wicking material. I can only review the performance on the equipment I have available.

Each box contains a leaflet with instructions on how to fill the blu device tanks, a list and description of the available flavours and various hazard warnings.

The blu e-liquids have the same ingredients – PG, VG, Nicotine and Flavourings. The proportion of the ingredients varies according to flavour and strength.

I have noticed the actual PG/VG proportions are not stated anywhere. The blu website shows an indication of High/Medium/Low level of PG or VG on the shop page for each liquid.

A brand new blu PRO clearomiser tank was used for each liquid to make sure I got the full taste not tainted by other flavours.

Being a childhood fan, though I’m now 41 – the name blu keeps reminding me of the band “Blue“.  Hence the obscure song references – I just can’t help it – I am “Guilty”.

Opening this you get the smell left in the container when you have eaten all of the “After Eights”. It smells of the description!

So I was hopeful of a warm soothing chocolate sensation.

I got a bit of a shock when my tonsils got an icy blast of menthol too!

On the inhale the menthol is pretty over powering.

On the exhale the lovely smooth dark chocolate comes through.

This is surprisingly addictive and such a weird sensation. The menthol is like more of a sensation than a taste if that makes sense? Very very odd – but so unusual it’s cool!

Imagine eating an ice cream, then eat a mint and then drink a cup of hot chocolate – this is what one vape on this liquid does to you! I think I (One) love this.

Polar Mint

I say…

Wow this is freezing cold! Brr – it “Make(s) Me Wanna” put the heating on!

Ice cold blast – more of a sensation than a taste. Similar to the mint chocolate – like having a glass of peppermint squash that is full of ice.

A lovely sweet minty taste on the exhale.

This is a lovely alternative to menthol. It doesn’t go up your nostrils like menthol does, it’s a cold throat sensation followed by eating some mints.

I just find it so puzzling that heated vapour from an e-cig makes your throat shiver! How does that even work! Some tanks really kick out the heat and you get a warm vapour. When I have had my weekly tank washing up session I will try this in something higher powered and see if it still works it’s frosty magic.

Berry Swirl

I say…

This smells and tastes of the sweet shop or the smell opening a bag of Haribo sweeties. A mix of all different fruit smells.

I definitely got the berry flavours, although no hint of cream but a slight hint of vanilla.

It is nice – but I would have preferred a more prominent single taste to stand out. The exhale can at times give a bit of an “air freshener” taste – a bit “perfumey”.

It is not a strong taste which becomes sickly but it isn’t weak either it is just about right.

It isn’t one I would use all day long. I have had worse and I have had better.

Tropic Tonic

My first impressions of this I didn’t really like – the smell and the taste to me was a bit “musty” – like old damp newspapers.

The pineapple is apparent, I do get a hint of mango, but no idea what passionfruit tastes like!

It had a tobacco like taste – more than fruity. I would have described this as a tobacco flavoured liquid with a hint of pineapple. I have marked it lower as it doesn’t really match the description. Whether I like it or not isn’t of much importance.

I didn’t enjoy this however it’s not revolting.  Sorry (seems to be the hardest word) – but not for me.

Caramel Cafe

I say….

Instantly I got a very strong dry tobacco flavour. I get the caramel a bit on the exhale – but mainly a tobacco flavour with strong coffee.

I really didn’t like this at all. However I think someone who smokes pipe tobacco may enjoy this plus people who like really strong coffee. If you have seen my other reviews – coffee and cinnamon flavours are my Kryptonite so keep that in mind.

I have marked it low not because of my personal taste but because it doesn’t taste of caramel which is something I really like. It tastes of bitterness and coffee – which I don’t.

Green Apple

Not much of a scent to this liquid so can’t really describe the smell.

This is a sour but sweet apple – I know a total oxymoron but hear me out!

You know the kids sweets that often have a sour sugary coating on the outside but the inside is sweet? This is the apple vaping version of one of them. Like an apple flavoured Pear Drop!

Not that sour it sucks your eyeballs into your head or not that sweet it makes your teeth sting – but a lovely balance of both.

As with the mint chocolate you get more flavour on the exhale than the inhale.

Final Verdict

The Blu e liquids are priced at the average range for 10ml in a non vaping store. Although, at the time of writing they have an offer on, buy 2 get one free, so a good deal if you want to try out their e cig liquid at a good price.

Using these with their natural relative the blu PRO starter kit I have to say I wasn’t expecting much in terms of flavour or vapour.

The flavour isn’t as strong as some liquids but the subtle flavour makes them more of a liquid you will use regularly as it won’t become sickly too soon.

This gave me slightly more than the average vapour I was expecting – which did surprise me.

I liked 4/6 of the liquids and I am pretty fussy so blu didn’t do badly. I think the descriptions on a couple didn’t match the taste.

My personal favourite was the Mint Chocolate which I will definitely continue to use. The Polar Mint is a lovely alternative to menthol and the Green Apple was a taste that takes you back to buying loose sweets from jars which were weighed on scales.

These are so easy to get hold of in many shops. They are so handy if you run out of e-liquid, in-between deliveries or if you dislike buying online. If I was out and about and lost or forgot my E-liquid I could pop and grab some Blu Mint Chocolate nearby. The price varies from £3-£5 which is reasonable for 10ml.

For anybody that has seen the progression of electronic cigarettes over in the USA you will most likely have heard of Blu e Cigs.

What Is The Best E Cig Starter kit In The UK, Europe, USA & Beyond?

Not only one of the biggest e cig brands in the States they were also one of the first to be acquired by a major tobacco company, in this case Lorillard.

With the US Blu E Cig acquisition proving a success for Lorillard they turned their attention to the UK/EU e cig market late in 2013 with SKYCIG the target.

This brings us to today, with SKYCIG no more and Blu taking it’s place and bringing along with it a new slicker marketing message and product.

The question is, is it really an improvement on SKY Cig and more importantly for current SKYCIG customers “can I use Blu Cig refills with Sky Cig hardware?” Lets find out with our Blu e Cig review! (Although the answer to the last question is yes for those in a rush).

Packaging

The presentation box I have to say does look good from the outer packaging to the inner. For this review I purchased the blu Premium Kit. Inside is the following:

• 2 x 145 mAh batteries
• 1 x PCC
• 5 x Menthol Cartomisers 18mg (Choice of Tobacco or Menthol)
• USB Charger

Battery/Responsiveness

The Blu e Cig batteries are, from what I can tell, the same as SKYCIG batteries bar the actual design. Blu have taken on their black design which works well throughout the whole product from the cartomisers to the PCC. The battery itself feels quality and the overall feel in the hand is good.

The capacity of the battery is rated at 145 mAh, for those not too sure what this means as a general rule of thumb 100 mAh = 1 hour of use, that is practical use. This is where cig-a-like batteries can cause users issues due to the limited battery life.

For me as a moderate vaper I was getting around 1.5 hours. Not a great battery life by any means but that is the nature of the beast when it comes to most cig-a-like electronic cigarettes. Heavy smokers making the switch may struggle with this.

If you are adamant a mini e cig is where you want to start (and there is nothing wrong with this) then just prepare yourself for a short battery life. There is one thing that does help with this though and that is the PCC.

PCC

The PCC for those that don’t know stands for Portable Charging Case. This does go some way to helping alleviate the poor battery life and one that other brands such as Jacvapour supply. The case itself is a power point that will charge upto four batteries before it needs re-charging itself. So rotating the two batteries might just about see you through a working day. The case also has space for three cartomisers and a fully made up e cig (cartomiser + battery).

The case itself is definitely one of the better looking PCC’s I have come across and is more slim lined than the SKYCIG Freedom case it has replaced. It is also finished with a rubberised coating that is smooth in the hand as well as allowing for an easy glide in and out of the pocket.

Charging a battery is easy to do, simply place the battery in the charging slot and close the lid. A light on the side labelled ‘BATT’ will illuminate, when a charge is complete this will stop. Charging the PCC is done via the USB cable.

Battery Replacements

There will of course be a time when new batteries are needed, this according to Blu Cig is around 250-300 cycles (charges). The batteries can be purchased separately.

Overall – The batteries and PCC really do look the part, the look and design of the PCC is a step up from the SKYCIG offering. However, don’t expect the batteries to last all day, they won’t. They are mini e cigs which means mini batteries! The PCC does help with this but heavy smokers making the switch could find the battery life an issue in the long run.

Vapour/Flavour

There is limited choice when it comes to choosing flavours and nicotine strengths with a starter kit. Take your pick, 3 x Tobacco 18mg or 3 x Menthol 18mg. That’s it.

I see that Blu are trying to take the confusion out of the buying process for new users but a bit more selection would be good to see initially although there are a number of refill flavours available to buy separately.

Better yet a mixed pack of flavours would be a great option to have.

I opted for the Menthol which whilst not being the best menthol cartomiser I have tried it certainly wasn’t bad. The inhale provides an icy hit on the back of the throat and the exhale leaves a cool minty aftertaste in the mouth. If I was a new e cig user I don’t think I would be disappointed with the flavour.

One little tip when vaping the Blu e Cig cartomisers (and most other e cigs for that matter), don’t take short sharp drags as you may do with a cigarette. E cigs require a slower, longer draw of around 3-4 seconds to get a decent vapour volume and flavour coming through. Taking short sharp drags will leave you disappointed for sure as it will produce little vapour volume. You basically need to give the battery time to heat up the e-liquid in the cartomiser.

Will My SKYCIG Refils Work With The Blu Cig batteries and Vice Versa?.

In short yes they will. The Blu Cig cartomisers will work with Sky Cig batteries and the SKYCIG cartomisers will work with the Blu e Cig batteries so if you have left over Skycig product it is still compatible, simply move over to Blu when you need replacements.

Buying Blu Cig Refills

As mentioned before there are more flavour options (8 to be exact) when buying the refills separately. Choose from 3 Tobacco e juice flavours, Menthol, Cherry, Vanilla, NRG and Cinnamon. Refills come in packs of three with reductions for bulk buys of 5 packs or more.

I have to say compared to other e cigarette brands out there these refills are on the expensive side considering only 3 cartomisers are in each pack.

The majority of brands out there supply 5 in a pack. I suppose you would need look at the cost comparison to smoking and of course not forgetting the price you put on other benefits of vaping vs smoking.

Overall – The Menthol flavour was decent. For current Skycig users the refills are compatible with Blu batteries. The only real downside here is the cartomiser refill prices that are a touch more expensive than other brands out there.

Returns/Warranty

Blu e Cig do offer a ’30-day Money Back Promise’ on both the ‘Starter Kit and the ‘Premium Kit’ even if you have used it. Take note though, there is a restocking fee so keep this in mind if a return may be a possibility prior to buying. The Blu Premium Kit is without doubt a well designed, solid product with the main improvements coming in the form of the PCC. While it may be a quality product you will need to decide if the small cig-a-like e cigs such as this are going to be right for you, the main drawback is the battery life.

For a number of years, they focused primarily on their cig-a-like starter kit that was marketed towards the new vaper.

It was a little bit of a surprise therefore to see them introduce a bigger e cigarette in the form of the Blu Cig Pro Kit.

This I guess shows that the larger batteries are indeed becoming all the more acceptable to new vapers that are making the switch to e cigs.

So of course I wanted to see for myself if Blu Cigs had released a good vape pen style e cig, so off I went to their website to by the Blu Pro Kit.

In The Box

The presentation box, as with all their other kits, looks very professional. Inside you will find:

• 1 x 950 mAh battery
• 1 x Clearomiser with replaceable coil
• 1 x 10ml Bottle of Classic Tobacco E-Liquid (18mg)
• USB Charger

Design and Build Quality

The Blu e Cig battery in the pro kit is a healthy 950 mAh battery which is definitely a good start. In the hand it also feels like a very solid e cig, the matte black finish is something I personally liked in other e cigs such as the Jacvapour Series S and feels great to handle.

The battery itself is taken from the Kanger EVOD design with a flush firing button that powers the battery.

The Blu branding is subtle with the addition of the blue glowing triangle on the base of the battery when it is in use.

It also features the now standard on\off function by pressing the button 5 times in quick succession.

So very good in terms of overall looks and quality.

Performance wise the Blu Pro battery, as mentioned, has a 950 mah capacity.The larger the ‘mAh’ the longer the battery will last between charges.

This of course does translate into a larger battery but this does also mean prolonged use.

I was getting pretty much a day of moderate vaping from this battery which is all good for me but not really surprising considering the size.

The other positive point with the Blu battery is that it has an EGO thread (one of the most popular) which will work with a whole host of clearomisers and tanks from other brands.Spare Blu  Pro Battery

The kit comes with just the one battery and while it has a longer life I would suggest, if budget allows, to get yourself a back up battery.

This way you will always have an e cig to use when the battery is on charge which can take around 3-4 hours using the USB charger.

There are two different replacement/spare battery sizes from Blu that are available to buy.

The first is of course the 950 mAh and the second is a slightly smaller 650 mAh battery

Both are decent prices but the latter would be just fine to see you through the charging period of the Pro battery.

Overall – The Blu E Cig Pro battery is well built, feels good in the hand and performs very well. Replacement batteries are also a reasonable price. So, a very good start.

How Does The Blu Pro Perform?

There is just one choice with the Blu Pro Kit when it comes to e-liquid and that choice is the Classic Tobacco with an 18mg nicotine strength.

As a long time vaper this strength wouldn’t be my personal choice but for new vapers this is a good place to start.

The other piece of the kit here is the clearomiser, again taken from the EVOD design, it has a matte finish with a subtle blue triangle which is part of the Blu logo.

The clearomiser has two small windows and although they are small they are just about big enough to make out how much e-liquid is in the tank. Capacity wise the Blu clearomiser will hold around 1.8ml of juice so for most should only need refilling once or twice throughout the day.

Filling is simple and done through the bottom of the tank. Just a case of unscrewing the stainless steel base from the black part of the tank, turning upside down and dripping (slowly) the e-liquid down the inside wall, just be sure to miss the centre tube and all will be OK!

When the atomiser coil, that sits in the base of the clearo, has reached the end of it’s life the flavour will change noticeably for the worse. This is when a change is needed. The coil can be replaced rather than the whole unit.

Here lies a problem though, Blu Cigs don’t seem to have these coils available on their site for sale?

I may be missing something here? Anyway, that only leaves the option of buying a whole new tank that are priced well but ultimately this is overkill.

Flavour

As for the flavour the Classic Tobacco is decent, I’m not really a fan of tobacco flavours but this was pretty realistic in terms of reproducing that flavour.

The throat hit is a touch on the strong side for my personal tastes but then again over the past couple of years I’ve worked my way down to a low strength as well as predominantly using PG/VG mixed e-liquids.

The vapour volume is just OK but this is more down to the e-liquid being 100% PG, this tends to give a stronger throat hit and slightly less vapour than having an e-liquid mixed with VG, but that’s another story.

When it comes to additional flavours Blu Cigs have a small selection of eight juices, the usual suspects are all there such as the Menthol and as well as an additional two tobacco flavours.

Then we have Strawberry Mint, Blueberry, Cherry, Vanilla and NRG which I think (I haven’t tried it) is a flavour similar to Red Bull.

So… not a huge selection but more than enough to keep a new vaper busy for a couple of months!

The Blu E Liquid price is standard for 10ml.

Would be good to see a few options here but then again you can always buy e-liquids from elsewhere, this e cigarette will take any brand of e-liquid.

Overall – The Classic Tobacco is a good version, throat hit is good and vapour volume average. The Blu E-Liquid is only available in 18mg nic strength though which doesn’t leave much room for maneuver.

Blu also don’t seem to sell replacement coils for their clearomisers which is a little odd.

What Can We Expect From The Plus+ Slide E Cig Kit By Blu?

All the above rings true for the Blu Pus+ E Cig kit that we are reviewing today. It offers a compact kit that houses your e cigs and cartridges making it highly portable. You can even pop your e cig out of the top of the case and push it back in when not in use.

OK… So lets jump straight in and have a closer look.

In The Box

The Blu Plus+ e cig kit comes in a standard cardboard box and includes the following:

Build, Design & Quality

The kit comes with few working parts and is super easy to get up and running with.

The battery that is supplied with the kit is 150 mAh rating. It is pretty much the nearest thing available at the moment in terms of being close to the size of a cigarette. That’s not to say it’s the same size as it is slightly bigger.

In the hand it feels good with a smooth finish and the branding is good without being to in your face. The quality is very good.

The case that comes with the Blu Plus+ Slide kit is something I haven’t seen before. Not to be mistaken with the Blu Plus+ Charge kit, this case is simply design for carrying your e cig gear.

The case is made from rubber and has a super soft finish on the outside making it easy to ‘slide’ in and out of your pocket. In practice this really works well.

It’s slim enough to carry around without being intrusive and the bonus is that you can carry one full e cig, one replacement refill cartridge and the USB charger.

There is a window to the front and back of the case and a hole the same circumference of the e cig at the top. A nice little deign feature that allows you to slide your e cig up through the whole when you want to vape.

No need to open the case and no need to remove the e cig. When done vaping you simply slide the e cig back down into the case by gripping the e cig through the windows.

As mentioned, very simple design but it is very effective.

How Does The Blu E Cig Plus+ perform?

Setting up the Blu E Cig is a simple affair, take your battery and refill cartridge and screw together. Your ready to go.

Now if you are a new vaper making the switch from smoking I will say straight from the off that battery life with this (and all) cig a like e cigs is not the best. It is the nature of the beast when it comes to the small e cigarettes.

So just keep that in mind, if you are a heavy smoker you could be re-charging every hour or two.

With that in mind I always advise with these type of kits to buy spare/back up batteries. In fact it’s a must do! The battery takes around 3 hours to charge using the USB charger in a USB port. So spare batteries allow you to rotate.

Also, if you are out and can’t get to a charging point and your battery dies what are you going to do?

Pre-empt these kind of issues and it will make your transition to vaping much, much smoother. Don’t expect to have all day, uninterrupted vaping with a single battery.

How Do You Know When The Blu+ Battery needs Charging?

The light on the tip of the battery will flash and you won’t be able to draw any vapour. It’s a sudden thing so you won’t get any warning it’s about to happen.

Again, the standard with e cig batteries but just be prepared.

Refill Cartridges/Clearomizers

The Blu Plus refill cartridges with this kit came in a Tobacco e liquid flavour. They are in a sealed 2 pack box.

There are 4 other flavour options available to buy separately, Menthol, Cherry, Blueberry and Strawberry Mint. They are available in various strengths.

All cartridges are labelled with the flavour and nicotine strength so no mistaking what you are vaping.

Blu Plus+ Tobacco

I’m not the biggest tobacco flavour fan, definitely wouldn’t be my first choice in any of my vapes. So I wasn’t a huge fan of this e juice. It does have that dry tobacco flavour, almost a touch on the bitter side.

Is it similar to real tobacco? I would say, as a vaper it is close. As a smoker though (which I haven’t done for 6 years) it may be a different story, especially if you are coming straight from the cigs.

One thing I would also say if you are making the switch. Don’t expect to get an exact tobacco flavour reproduced in vape form. You have to give flavours time, it’s surprising how quickly you can come around to a flavour which you may not like in the first instance.

Try not to compare too much and write things off, vaping is about adapting. It isn’t smoking, it’s an effective alternative.

I started on tobacco flavours in 2009 but soon moved away from these into fruit e juice flavours. The latter is really what kept me off the cigarettes.

Since then I am really enjoying my dessert flavoured e liquid as well.

Of course this is just my personal experience, yours will be different.

Blu Plus+ Strawberry Mint

This is actually a really refreshing flavour. For me though the mint is the overriding flavour with the strawberry just hinting in the background and slightly more prominent on the exhale.

Not a fresh strawberry taste, more of a sweet strawberry.

I personally would of liked more strawberry in this mix though.

Blu Plus+ Blueberry

The Blueberry is not as punchy as other blueberry flavours I have tried but it does give a nice subtle flavour that lingers in the mouth.

Blu Plus+ Cherry

I like cherry flavours and have tried many in cartomizer form in the past but this is slightly different.

The Blu Plus cherry is more like the cherry lips sweets from back in the day. On the inhale you get a sweet cherry and on the exhale there is a slight floral note that hits right at the end.

I never liked cherry lips but if you did then this flavour could be worth a try.

The vapour volume for all flavours was actually decent for a cig-a-like with the throat hit being on the smoother side.

One refill lasted me most of a day so definitely a plus point.

What I Like

The quality of the e cig is good and has a good feel in the hand. The soft touch slide case is a great addition allowing you to easily carry around your e cig slipping it in and out of your pocket with ease.

The flavours on a whole hold their own against other refill cartomizers I have tried and the cartridges themselves last a good amount of time.

It’s also very easy for new users to just pick up and use out of the box.

What I Dislike

The obvious down side is the battery life but this isn’t a surprise as most cig-a-likes are not the best on this front and a second or third spare is recommended if you choose this e cig for the long term.

Final Blu E Cig Plus+ Slide Kit Review Verdict

For me, I won’t be using Blu e cigs after this review. But that is because I have moved onto bigger, more advanced vape mods a long time ago.

If, however, you are new to vaping and want the familiarity of a small e cig then this is as good a choice as any.

Many new vapers do find they may start on cig-a-likes but then move onto to refillable vape pens where they have more choices for flavour and longer battery life. Some go straight to vape pens from the start.

At the end of the day it’s about finding the right solution for you and the Blu E Cig plus+ slide kit will give you a taster of vaping for a very reasonable price.

The only thing I will say is if you are a heavy smoker you may want to consider starting on a vape pen for improved battery life.
